पुत्रपौत्रैः परिवृतो भुक्त्वा भोगान्मनोहरान्
surrounded by sons and grandsons, will enjoy delightful pleasures,
तस्मान्नारद माहात्म्यं द्वादश्याः कार्तिकस्य च
Therefore, Narada, this is the greatness of Dvadashi and Kartika.
द्वादश्या ह्युत्तमं पुण्यं माहात्म्यं यः पठेन्नरः
Whoever reads the excellent merit and greatness of Dvadashi,
राजर्षिरम्बरीषोऽपि चकारैतद्व्रतं शुभम्
Even the royal sage Ambarisha performed this auspicious vow.
अभावे तूद्यापनस्य फलं नैवाऽऽप्नुयात्क्वचित्
In the absence of the concluding rite, one never attains the fruit anywhere.
कृतव्रतफलाप्त्यर्थं कुर्यादुद्यापनं बुधः
A wise person should perform the concluding rite for the attainment of the vow's fruit.
कार्तिकेऽपि कृतं देव व्रतानामुत्तमं व्रतम्
Even in Kartika, O Lord, the vow performed is the best of vows.
तस्मात्कार्तिकमासस्य चोद्यापनविधिं प्रभो
Therefore, O Lord, the procedure for the concluding rite in the month of Kartika [is explained].
तच्छृणुष्व महाभक्त्या सविधानं समासतः
Now listen with great devotion to the procedure, summarized and with due attention.
ऊर्जे शुक्लचतुर्दश्यां कुर्यादुद्यापनं व्रती
On the bright fourteenth day of the month of Mārgaśīrṣa, the observer of the vow should perform the concluding rite.
तुलस्या उपरिष्टात्तु कुर्यान्मंडपिकां शुभाम्
Above the tulasi plant, one should construct an auspicious pavilion.
दीपमाला चतुर्दिक्षु कार्या तत्र सुशोभना
A beautiful row of lamps should be arranged in all four directions there.
द्वारेषु द्वारपालाश्च पूजयेन्मृन्मयान्पृथक्
At the entrances, one should worship clay doorkeepers separately.
नन्दश्चैव सुनंदश्च कुमुदः कुमुदाक्षकः 2.4.34.
Nanda, Sunanda, Kumuda, and Kumudākṣa are their names.
तुलसीमूलदेशे तु सर्वतोभद्रसंज्ञितम्
At the base of the tulasi, in the place called Sarvatobhadra,
तस्योपरिष्टात्कलशं पूर्णरत्नसमन्वितम्
Above that, a pot filled with jewels should be placed.
कौशेयपीतवसनं लक्ष्म्या युक्तं प्रपूजयेत्
It should be worshipped, adorned with yellow silk and united with Lakshmi.
तस्यामुपवसेद्भक्त्या शांतः प्रणतमानसः
One should sit there with devotion, peaceful and with a mind inclined to reverence.
गीतं कुर्वंति ये भक्त्या जागरे चक्रपाणिनः
Those who, with devotion, sing songs in the night vigil for the wielder of the discus,
ततस्तु पूर्णिमायां तु सपत्नीकान्द्विजोत्तमान्
Then, on the full moon, the best of twice-born, along with their wives,
प्रातःस्नानं ततः कृत्वा देवपूजां तथैव च
After performing the morning bath and likewise the worship of the deity,
अतो देवेति मंत्रेण जुहुयात्तिलपायसम्
With the mantra 'Ato Deva', one should offer sesame-rice pudding into the fire.
होमशेषं समाप्याथ ब्राह्मणान्पूज्य भक्तितः
After completing the remainder of the fire offering, one should worship the brāhmaṇas with devotion.
ततो गां कपिलां तत्र पूजयेद्विधिवद्व्रती 2.4.34.
Then, the observer of the vow should properly worship a tawny cow there.
गुरुं व्रतोपदेष्टारं वस्त्रालंकारभूषणैः
The teacher, the instructor of the vow, should be honored with garments and ornaments.
युष्मत्प्रसादाद्देवेशः प्रसन्नोऽस्तु सदा मम
By your grace, O Lord of the gods, may you always be pleased with me.
तत्सर्वं नाशमायातु स्थिरा मे चाऽस्तु संततिः
May all that be destroyed, and may my lineage remain steadfast.
सतां समागमो भूयान्मम जन्मनिजन्मनि
May I have the company of the virtuous in every birth.
प्रतिमां तां गुरोर्दद्यात्सवस्त्रां मुनिपुंगव
One should give that image to the teacher, adorned with garments, O foremost of sages.
द्वादश्यां प्रतिबुद्धोऽसौ त्रयोदश्यां युतः सुरैः
On the twelfth day, he awakens; on the thirteenth, he is joined by the gods.
