अन्नमाश्रित्य तिष्ठंति संप्राप्ते हरिवासरे
They remain, relying on food, until the arrival of Hari's day.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन कुर्यादेकादशीव्रतम्
Therefore, with all effort, one should observe the vow of Ekādaśī.
नरके नियतं वासः पितृभिः सह तस्य वै
He surely resides in hell together with his ancestors.
दशमीवेधसंयुक्ता त्याज्या चैकादशी व्रते
The tenth day joined with grains, and the eleventh during the vow, must be abandoned.
तस्याः पुत्रशतं नष्टं तस्मात्तां वधजां त्यजेत्
A hundred sons of hers are lost; therefore, one should renounce that which is born of killing.
रुक्मांगदोऽपि राजर्षिर्मोहिन्याः संगमेन च
Even the royal sage Rukmāṅgada, through union with Mohinī—
इति प्रबोधोत्सवः अथ द्वादशीमाहात्म्यम् द्वादशी पुण्यदा प्रोक्ता सर्वाऽघौघविनाशिनी
Thus is the festival of awakening. Now, the greatness of the twelfth day: The twelfth is declared to bestow merit, destroying all heaps of sin.
किमिष्टैश्चैव पुत्रैश्च द्वादशी येन सेविता 2.4.33.
What use are desired things or sons to one who has observed the twelfth day?
यत्फलं तदवाप्नोति द्वादश्यामेकभोजनात्
He attains that fruit by eating only once on the twelfth day.
सिक्थेसिक्थे च वैकस्य कतिब्राह्मणभोजनम्
And for one, the eating of clarified butter and curds, and the feeding of how many Brāhmaṇas?
शालिग्रामशिलादानं यः कुर्याद्द्वादशीदिने दत्त्वा यत्फलमाप्नोति तत्फलं लभते नरः
Whoever gives a Śāligāma stone on the twelfth day—whatever fruit is obtained by giving it, that fruit a man attains.
पंचामृतैस्तु यो विष्णुं भक्त्या संस्नापयेद्द्विज
Whoever bathes Viṣṇu with the five nectars, with devotion, O twice-born—
शुक्ले कार्तिकमासस्य द्वादश्यां परमोत्सवे स तु मोक्षमवाप्नोति नाऽत्र कार्या विचारणा
On the bright twelfth of the month of Kārtika, at the great festival, he surely attains liberation; there is no need for doubt here.
द्वादश्यां कार्तिके मासि स्नानसंध्यादिकर्म च
On the twelfth day, in the month of Kārtika, bathing and the rituals of twilight, and so forth—
यस्तस्यां सूपनैवेद्यं न ददाति नराधमः
Whoever, a vile man, does not offer soup as food on that day—
तस्मात्सूपस्य नैवेद्यं द्वादश्यां कार्तिके शुभे
Therefore, the offering of soup as food on the auspicious twelfth day in Kārtika—
यस्तस्यां दंपतीनां तु भोजनं कुरुते नरः
Whoever, on that day, provides food to a married couple—
धात्रीच्छायां गतो यस्तु द्वादश्यां पूजयेद्धरिम् 2.4.33.
Whoever, having gone to the shade of the myrobalan tree, worships Hari on the twelfth day—
स्वयं च तत्र भुंक्ते यः सूपभक्ष्यादिकं तथा
And whoever himself eats there, likewise soup and other foods—
एवं प्रातर्विधायाऽथ पूजां दामोदरस्य हि
Thus, having performed the morning worship of Dāmodara—
तुलसीसन्निधौ कृत्वा पताकाध्वजशोभितम्
Having placed it near the tulasi plant, adorned with beautiful banners and flags,
मुक्तादामभिराच्छन्नं कृत्वा मंडपमुत्तमम्
and having made an excellent pavilion covered with garlands of pearls,
पंचरात्रोक्तमार्गेण गन्धपुष्पाक्षतादिभिः
according to the procedure prescribed in the Pancharatra, with fragrant substances, flowers, rice grains, and the like,
विविधैः खाद्यनैवेद्यैर्जलेन च सुगंधिना
with various kinds of food offerings, fragrant water, and
पुष्पाणि च विचित्राणि सुगन्धीनि बहूनि च
many diverse and fragrant flowers,
तुलस्याश्चापि धात्र्याश्च फलैश्चाऽपि प्रपूजयेत्
one should also worship with the fruits of tulasi and amalaki.
अभिषेकं विना सर्वपूजां कृत्वा विधानतः
Having performed the entire worship according to the rules, except for the ritual bathing,
कुर्याद्भक्तियुतो विप्र दद्याच्चैव फलादिकम् 2.4.33.
one should, with devotion, O Brahmin, also offer fruits and the like.
ततो वृद्धान्पितॄन्मातॄन् पूजयित्वा विधानतः
Then, having duly honored the elders, fathers, and mothers,
इत्येवं तु विधानेन यः कुर्याद्द्वादशीव्रतम्
Thus, whoever observes the Dvadashi vow in this manner,
