Along with wonder and enthusiasm, free from laziness and the like,
With a mind engaged in waving lights and not dejected,
One should perform the night vigil for the Lord, endowed with these qualities.
Whoever does thus with devotion, free from miserliness regarding wealth,
Whoever always worships Hari in the month of Kārtika with the Purusha Sūkta,
According to the prescribed method as stated in the Pañcarātra,
Or worships Hari in Kārtika with the words 'Salutations to Nārāyaṇa',
Recites the thousand names of Hari and the deliverance of the king of elephants,
For thousands of crores of yugas and hundreds of manvantaras,
All those born in his lineage, by the hundreds and thousands,
Whoever, in the last watch of the night in Kārtika, performs hymn-singing,
And offers food to Hari at the end of the day in Kārtika,
O best of sages, the worship with mālatī and lotus flowers is inexhaustible in merit.
In the bright fortnight of Kārtika, if a man observes the Ekādaśī fast,
On this very occasion, O bird, the awakening of Hari should be performed.
On Ekādaśī, then, Viṣṇu, during Cāturmāsya, had lain asleep.
Therefore, the awakening should be done by Vaiṣṇavas on Ekādaśī: 'Arise, O beloved of Lakṣmī, bring auspiciousness to the three worlds.'
Having said this, one should sound the conch, kettle-drum, and other instruments in the morning.
After awakening the Lord of the gods and performing his worship,
Every Ekādaśī is meritorious, but Kārtikī is considered especially so.
They remain, relying on food, until the arrival of Hari's day.
Therefore, with all effort, one should observe the vow of Ekādaśī.
He surely resides in hell together with his ancestors.
The tenth day joined with grains, and the eleventh during the vow, must be abandoned.
A hundred sons of hers are lost; therefore, one should renounce that which is born of killing.
Even the royal sage Rukmāṅgada, through union with Mohinī—
Thus is the festival of awakening. Now, the greatness of the twelfth day: The twelfth is declared to bestow merit, destroying all heaps of sin.
What use are desired things or sons to one who has observed the twelfth day?
He attains that fruit by eating only once on the twelfth day.
And for one, the eating of clarified butter and curds, and the feeding of how many Brāhmaṇas?
