ततोऽशपज्जयः क्रोधाद्विजयं लुब्धमानसम्
Then Jaya, angered, cursed Vijaya, whose mind was greedy.
विजयस्तस्य तं शापं श्रुत्वा सोप्यशपच्च तम्
Hearing that curse, Vijaya also cursed him in return.
तत्तदाचख्यतुर्विष्णुं दृष्ट्वा नित्यार्चने विभुम्
They both reported these matters to Vishnu, whom they saw engaged in constant worship.
भविष्यावः कृपासिंधो तच्छापो विनिवर्त्यताम्
O ocean of compassion, let those curses be revoked.
मयाऽपि नान्यथा कर्तुं शक्यते तत्कदाचन
Even by me, it cannot be done otherwise at any time.
प्रह्लादवचसा स्तंभेऽप्याविर्भूतो ह्यहं पुरा
By Prahlada’s words, I once manifested from the pillar.
तस्माद्युवामिमौ शापावनुऽभूय स्वयंकृतौ
Therefore, you two must experience these curses, which you yourselves have made.
गणावूचतुः ततस्तौ ग्राहमातंगावभूतां गंडकीतटे
The attendants spoke: Then those two became a crocodile and an elephant on the bank of the Gandaki.
कदाचित्स गजः स्नातुं कार्तिके गंडकीं गतः
Once, the elephant went to the Gandaki to bathe during Kartika.
ग्राहग्रस्तो ह्यसौ नागः सस्मार श्रीपतिं तदा 2.4.28.
The elephant was seized by the crocodile and then remembered the Lord.
ततस्तौ ग्राहमातंगौ चक्रं क्षिप्त्वा समुद्धृतौ
Then, after throwing the discus, those two—the crocodile and the elephant—were rescued.
ततःप्रभृति तत्स्थानं हरिक्षेत्रमितिस्मृतम्
From that time onward, that place has been known as Hari-kshetra.
तावुभौ विश्रुतौ लोके जयश्च विजयस्तथा
Both of them, Jaya and Vijaya, became renowned in the world.
अतस्त्वमपि धर्मज्ञ नित्यं विष्णुव्रते स्थितः
Therefore, you too, knower of dharma, remain always steadfast in the vow of Vishnu.
तुलामकरमेषेषु प्रातःस्नायी सदा भव
During the months of Libra and Capricorn, always bathe in the morning.
ब्राह्मणानथ गाश्चाऽपि वैष्णवांश्च सदा भज
Always honor Brahmins, cows, and Vaishnavas.
एवं त्वमपि देहांते तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्
Thus, at the end of your body, you too will attain the supreme abode of Vishnu.
तावज्जन्म व्रतादस्माद्विष्णुसंतुष्टिकारकात्
As long as this birth lasts, maintain this vow, which brings satisfaction to Vishnu.
धन्योऽसि विप्राग्र्य यतस्त्वयैतद्व्रतं कृतं तुष्टिकरं जगद्गुरोः
Blessed are you, foremost among Brahmins, for you have performed this vow that brings satisfaction to the Teacher of the world.
तया कलहया सार्द्धं वैकुण्ठभवनं गतौ ।। 2.4.28.
With that quarrelsome woman, he went to the abode of Vaikuṇṭha.
धर्मदत्तो ह्यसौ जातप्रत्ययस्तद्व्रते स्थितः
That Dharmadatta, firm in his conviction, remained steadfast in that vow.
इतिहासमिमं पुराभवं शृणुते श्रावयते च यः पुमान्
Any man who listens to or recites this ancient history,
इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पृथुर्विस्मितमानसः
Hearing those words, Pṛthu was filled with wonder in his mind.
पुराऽवंतीपुरे कश्चिद्विप्र आसीद्धनेश्वरः
Long ago, in the city of Avanti, there was a certain Brahmin who was a lord of wealth.
देशाद्देशातरं गच्छन्क्रयविक्रयकारणात्
He would travel from one region to another for the sake of buying and selling.
महिषेण कृता पूर्वं तस्मान्माहिष्मतीति सा
Formerly, it was established by a buffalo, and thus it is called Māhiṣmatī.
कार्तिकव्रतिनस्तत्र नानादेशाऽऽगतान्नरान्
There, men who observed the Kārtika vow had gathered from various regions.
स नित्यं नर्मदातीरे भ्रमन्विक्रयकारणात्
He would always wander along the banks of the Narmadā, engaged in trade.
कांश्चित्पुराणं पठतः कांश्चिच्च श्रवणे रतान्
He saw some reciting the Purāṇas, and others absorbed in listening.
उद्यापनविधौ सक्तान्कांश्चिज्जागरणे रतान्
Some were engaged in the rites of completion, and some were intent on night vigils.
