भीतं संमूर्च्छितं दृष्ट्वा चंडालं स द्विजाग्रणीः
The foremost of brahmins saw the outcaste, frightened and fainting.
अथोत्थितं तमेवासौ विष्णुदासो व्यलोकयत्
Then Viṣṇudāsa looked at him as he rose up.
तं दृष्ट्वा सात्त्विकैर्भावैरावृतो द्विजसत्तमः
Seeing him, the best of brahmins was filled with pure feelings.
अथ शक्रादयो देवास्तत्रैवाभ्याययुस्तदा
Then at that moment, Indra and the other gods arrived there.
विमानशतसंकीर्णं देवर्षिशतसंकुलम्
It was crowded with hundreds of celestial chariots and thronged with hundreds of divine sages.
ततो विष्णुः समालिंग्य स्वभक्तं सात्त्विकव्रतम्
Then Viṣṇu embraced his devotee, steadfast in the pure vow.
विमानवरसंस्थं तं गच्छंतं विष्णुसन्निधिम्
Seated in a splendid chariot, he went to the presence of Viṣṇu.
वैकुण्ठभुवनं यांतं विष्णुदासं विलोक्य सः 2.4.27.
Seeing Viṣṇudāsa going to the world of Vaikuṇṭha,
स विष्णुरूपधृग्विप्रो याति वैकुण्ठमंदिरम्
The brahmin, assuming the form of Viṣṇu, goes to the mansion of Vaikuṇṭha.
दीक्षितेन मया सम्यक्सत्रेऽस्मिन्वैष्णवे त्वया
By me, properly initiated, and by you, in this Vaiṣṇava sacrifice,
नैवाऽद्यापि स मे देवः प्रसन्नो जायते ध्रुवम्
Even now, O Lord, he has not become pleased with me, certainly.
तस्माद्दानैश्च यज्ञैश्च नैव विष्णुः प्रसीदति
Therefore, neither by gifts nor by sacrifices does Viṣṇu become pleased.
आबाल्याद्दीक्षितो यज्ञे ह्यपुत्रत्वमगाद्यतः
From childhood he was consecrated for the sacrifice, and so he remained without offspring.
तस्मादद्याऽपि तद्देशे सदा राज्यांऽशभागिनः
Therefore, even today, in that region, they always share the royal portion.
यज्ञवाटं ततोऽभ्येत्य यज्ञकुण्डाग्रतः स्थितः
Then, approaching the sacrificial enclosure, he stood before the sacrificial fire-pit.
विष्णो भक्तिं स्थिरां देहि मनोवाक्काय कर्मभिः
Grant me unwavering devotion to Viṣṇu, through mind, speech, body, and actions.
मुद्गलस्तु तदा क्रोधाच्छिखामुत्पाटयत्स्वकाम्
Then Mudgala, out of anger, tore out his own topknot.
तावदाविरभूद्विष्णुः कुण्डाग्नौ भक्तवत्सलः 2.4.27.
At that moment Viṣṇu, who cherishes his devotees, appeared in the sacrificial fire.
तमालिंग्याऽऽत्मसारूप्यं दत्त्वा वैकुण्ठमंदिरम्
Embracing him, he granted him likeness to himself and the abode of Vaikuṇṭha.
एतावुभौ तत्समरूपभाजौ द्वाःस्थौ कृतौ तेन रमाप्रियेण
These two, having received forms like his, were made doorkeepers by the beloved of Lakṣmī.
किं नु ताभ्यां पुरा चीर्णं तस्मात्तद्रूपधारिणौ
What did those two do before, that they took on such forms?
गणावूचतुः तृणबिंदोस्तु कन्यायां देवहूत्यां पुरा द्विज
The attendants said: Long ago, O twice-born, to the daughter of Tṛṇabindu, Devahūti,
ज्येष्ठो जयः कनिष्ठोऽभूद्विजयश्चैव नामतः
The elder was named Jaya, and the younger was Vijaya.
जयश्च विजयश्चैव विष्णुभक्तिरतौ सदा
Jaya and Vijaya were always devoted to Viṣṇu.
नित्यमष्टाक्षरीजाप्यौ विष्णुव्रतकरावुभौ
Both constantly recited the eight-syllable mantra and observed vows to Viṣṇu.
मरुत्तेन कदाचित्तावाहूतौ यज्ञकर्मणि
Once, they were summoned by Marutta for a sacrificial rite.
जयस्तत्राभवद्ब्रह्मायाजको विजयोऽभवत्
There, Jaya became the priest for Brahmā, and Vijaya as well.
मरुत्तोऽवभृथस्नातस्ताभ्यां वित्तं ददौ बहु
After Marutta had bathed at the end of the sacrifice, he gave them much wealth.
यजनाय पृथग्विष्णोस्तुष्ट्यर्थं तौ ततो मुनी
Then, for the satisfaction of Viṣṇu, the sages used that wealth separately for worship.
जयोऽब्रवीत्समो भागः क्रियतामिति तत्र सः 2.4.28.
Jaya said there, 'Let an equal share be made.'
