Kalahā said: Citragupta, rebuking me, spoke these words: Citragupta said: She has performed no good deed at all.
While eating delicious food, she never offered it to her husband.
Because of her enmity toward her husband, she was always quarrelsome at that time.
She would always eat from the cooking pot, and she ate alone, for this reason.
She even incited her husband, and by her, suicide was committed.
Therefore, she must be taken by the guards to the region of the wind.
Hereafter, this doer of evil will experience three wombs above.
Afflicted by hunger and thirst, she will enter the body of a merchant.
As long as she remains on that bank, so long will she stay in his body.
Then, tormented by hunger and thirst, I saw you, O best of twice-born.
Therefore, do what is to be done, O foremost of Brahmins; how may I attain liberation?
Thinking thus about her quarrelsome words, the foremost of Brahmins, filled with amazement and sorrow at the fear of the ripening of her deeds,
For her, who was situated in a ghostly body, there was no eligibility among them.
Because of seeing your suffering, my mind too is distressed.
Therefore, the Kartika vow that I have observed since birth—
Having said this, Dharmadatta then sprinkled her.
Immediately she was freed from ghosthood, shining like a blazing flame.
Then she bowed down on the ground like a staff and saluted that Brahmin.
Kalahā spoke: 'By your grace, O best of Brahmins, I am freed from hell.'
A radiant aerial chariot appeared, equipped with attendants in the form of Vishnu.
Then she was brought down from that excellent celestial chariot by the two gatekeepers.
At that time, Dharmadatta beheld that celestial chariot with great wonder.
Those two, endowed with virtue and good conduct, raised up the reverent Brahmin.
Compassionate to the distressed, all-knowing, devoted to the vow of Vishnu—
From childhood you have observed this auspicious Kartika vow.
The sin accumulated over hundreds of previous births has been destroyed.
By the merit of keeping vigil for Hari and similar acts, you have attained this celestial chariot.
By the merit of giving lamps and other virtuous deeds, you have attained a form radiant like light; by your gifts, O ocean of compassion, you have reached the presence of Vishnu.
At the end of this life, you too will go together with your wives.
They are blessed, their purpose fulfilled; and for them, life has borne fruit.
