महावृषभमारूढः स बभूव जलंधरः
Jalandhara mounted the great bull.
अभ्याययौ सखीमध्यात्तद्दर्शनपथेऽभवत्
He advanced from among his companions, coming into view.
तावत्स्ववीर्यं मुमुचे जडांगश्चाऽभवत्तदा
At that moment, he released his own power and became inert.
जगामाऽन्तर्हिता वेगात्सा तदोत्तरमानसे
Swiftly, she vanished and entered the northern lake.
जवेनाऽऽगात्पुनर्युद्धं यत्र देवो वृषध्वजः
With great speed, he again went to the battle where the god with the bull-banner was present.
तावद्ददर्श तं देवं सूपविष्टं समीपगम् पार्वत्युवाच विष्णो जलंधरो दैत्यः कृतवान्परमाद्भुतम्
Then, having approached, Pārvatī saw that god seated, and said: 'Viṣṇu, the demon Jalandhara has performed a most wondrous deed.'
तत्किं न विदितं तेऽस्ति चेष्टितं तस्य दुर्मतेः विष्णुरुवाच तेनैव दर्शितः पंथा वयमप्यन्वयामहे
'Is there anything about the actions of that wicked one that you do not know?' Viṣṇu replied, 'He himself has shown the way, and we too have followed it.'
नाऽन्यथा स भवेद्वध्यः पातिव्रत्यसुरक्षित्ः नारद उवाच जगाम विष्णुरित्युक्त्वा पुनर्जालंधरं पुरम्
'Otherwise, he could not be slain, protected as he is by his wife's chastity.' Nārada said: 'Having spoken thus, Viṣṇu returned again to the city of Jalandhara.'
अथ रुद्रश्च गंधर्वाऽनुगतः संगरे स्थितः 2.4.20.
Then Rudra, accompanied by Gandharvas, stood ready in the battle.
ततो भवो विस्मितमानसः पुनर्जगाम युद्धाय जलंधरं रुषा
Then Bhava, his mind astonished, went again in anger to fight Jalandhara.
पातिव्रत्यस्य भंगाय वृंदायाश्चाऽकरोन्मतिम्
To break the chastity of Vṛndā, he caused her mind to become deluded.
अथ वृंदारका देवी स्वप्नमध्ये ददर्श ह
Then the goddess Vṛndā, in the midst of a dream, saw—
कृष्णप्रसूनभूषाढ्यं क्रव्यादगणसेवितम्
—one adorned with black flowers, attended by hosts of flesh-eaters.
स्वपुरं सागरे मग्नं सहसैवाऽऽत्मना सह
She saw her own city, together with herself, suddenly submerged in the ocean.
ददर्शोदितमादित्यं सच्छिद्रं निष्प्रभं मुहुः
She repeatedly saw the sun rise, pierced and devoid of brilliance.
कुत्रचिन्नाऽलभच्छर्म गोपुराट्टालभूमिषु
Somewhere she could not find any shelter in the courtyards or on the ramparts of the city.
तत्राऽपि साऽभ्रमद्बाला नाऽलभत्कुत्रचित्सुखम्
Even there, the bewildered girl found no happiness anywhere.
ततः सा भ्रमती बाला ददर्शाऽतीवभीषणौ
Then, as she wandered, the girl saw two exceedingly terrifying beings.
तौ दृष्ट्वा विह्वलाऽतीव पलायनपराऽभवत्
Seeing them, she became extremely agitated and was intent on fleeing.
ततस्तत्कण्ठमावृत्य निजां बाहुलतां भयात् 2.4.21.
Then, out of fear, she wrapped her own tender arm around her neck.
मुनिस्तां विह्वलां दृष्ट्वा राक्षसाऽनुगतां तदा
The sage, seeing her agitated and accompanied by Rākṣasas at that time—
तौ हुंकारभयत्रस्तौ दृष्ट्वा च विमुखौ गतौ
—saw those two, terrified by the sound 'huṃ', turn away and depart.
किंचिद्विप्तुमिच्छामि कृपया तन्निशामय
I wish to speak a little; kindly listen to me with compassion.
जलंधरो हि मद्भर्ता रुद्रं योद्धुं गतः प्रभो
For Jalandhara, my husband, has gone forth to fight Rudra, O Lord.
तावत्कपी समायातौ प्रणम्य चाग्रतः स्थितौ
At that moment, two monkeys arrived, bowed, and stood before me.
ततस्तद्भ्रूलतासंज्ञानियुक्तौ गगनं गतौ शिरःकबन्धे हस्तौ च गृहीत्वा समुपस्थितौ
Then, with gestures of their vine-like eyebrows, they rose into the sky, and, seizing the headless trunk and the hands, they appeared before me.
शिरःकबंधे हस्तौ च दृष्ट्वाऽब्धितनयस्य सा
Seeing the headless trunk and the hands of the son of the ocean,
कमंडलूदकैः सिक्त्वा मुनिनाऽऽश्वासिता तदा
She was sprinkled with water from the water-pot and comforted by the sage at that time.
स कथं न वदस्यद्य वल्लभा मामनागसम्
Why do you not speak today, beloved, to me who am blameless?
येन देवाः सगंधर्वा निर्जिता विष्णुना सह 2.4.21.
He by whom the gods, along with the Gandharvas and even Vishnu, were defeated—
