Then, hearing the tumult of the hosts, the moon-crested Lord,
beheld Rudra's illusion; and the hosts, with lion-like roars, once more—
and the demons, seeing this terrible sight, all fled in every direction.
But Jalandhara, seeing those demons retreating from the battle,
Śumbha, Niśumbha, Aśvamukha, Kālanemi, and Balāhaka—
Śiva saw the host of gaṇas shrouded in darkness by a hail of arrows.
He then afflicted the demons with a storm of arrows.
With the sharp edge of his sword, he severed the head from the body with an axe.
Binding the voracious demon with a noose, he struck him down upon the ground.
The demons could not stand, like elephants terrified by lions.
Jalandhara, whose voice thundered like a fierce bolt, called out in battle: 'Fight with me directly; what use are these others you have subdued?'
'Whatever strength you possess, O one with matted hair, display it now.'
He cut down those who approached with sharp arrows, laughing as he did so.
His bow destroyed, deprived of his chariot, he seized his mace and rushed forward with speed.
Nevertheless, raising his fist, he advanced with intent to slay Rudra.
Then Jalandhara, the demon, recognizing Rudra as superior in strength—
At that moment, the hosts of Gandharvas and Apsaras sang and danced.
Witnessing this great marvel, Rudra was astonished and let out a cry.
Seeing Rudra focused in single-minded concentration, the demon Jalandhara—
In battle, he stationed the mighty Shumbha and Nishumbha.
Jalandhara mounted the great bull.
He advanced from among his companions, coming into view.
At that moment, he released his own power and became inert.
Swiftly, she vanished and entered the northern lake.
With great speed, he again went to the battle where the god with the bull-banner was present.
Then, having approached, Pārvatī saw that god seated, and said: 'Viṣṇu, the demon Jalandhara has performed a most wondrous deed.'
'Is there anything about the actions of that wicked one that you do not know?' Viṣṇu replied, 'He himself has shown the way, and we too have followed it.'
'Otherwise, he could not be slain, protected as he is by his wife's chastity.' Nārada said: 'Having spoken thus, Viṣṇu returned again to the city of Jalandhara.'
Then Rudra, accompanied by Gandharvas, stood ready in the battle.
Then Bhava, his mind astonished, went again in anger to fight Jalandhara.
