निशुम्भः कार्तिकेयस्य मयूरं पंचभिः शरैः
Niśumbha struck Kārtikeya’s peacock with five arrows.
ततः शक्तिधरः शक्तिं यावज्जग्राह रोषितः
Then, the wielder of the spear, enraged, seized his spear.
नंदीश्वरः शरव्रातैः कालनेमिमवध्यत
Nandīśvara slew Kālanemi with volleys of arrows.
कालनेमिस्तु संक्रुद्धो धनुश्चिच्छेद नंदिनः
But Kālanemi, furious, cut Nandin’s bow.
स शूलभिन्नहृदयो हताश्वो हतसारथिः
His heart pierced by a spear, his horses slain, his charioteer killed.
अथ शुम्भो गणेशश्च रथमूषकवाहनौ
Then Śumbha and Ganeśa, both riding chariots drawn by mice.
गणेशस्तु तदा शुम्भं हृदि विव्याध पत्रिणा
At that moment, Ganeśa pierced Śumbha’s heart with a feathered arrow.
ततोऽतिक्रुद्धः शुम्भोऽपि बाणषष्ट्या गणाधिपम् 2.4.19.
Then, Śumbha, greatly enraged, struck the lord of the Gaṇas with sixty arrows.
मूषकः शरभिन्नांगश्चचाल दृढवेदनः
The mouse, its body pierced by arrows, trembled in intense pain.
ततो लंबोदरः शुम्भं हत्वा परशुना हृदि
Then Lambodara slew Śumbha, striking his heart with an axe.
कालनेमिर्निशुंभश्चाऽप्युभौ लंबोदरं शरैः
Kālanemi and Niśumbha both struck Lambodara with arrows.
तं पीडयमानमालोक्य वीरभद्रो महाबलः
Seeing him afflicted, Vīrabhadra, mighty in strength,
कूष्मांडभैरवाश्चाऽपि वेताला योगिनीगणाः
Kūṣmāṇḍas, Bhairavas, Vetālas, and bands of Yoginīs,
ततः किलकिलाशब्दैः सिंहनादैः सुघर्घरैः
Then, with sounds of clamor, lion-roars, and fierce growls,
ततो भूतान्यधावंत भक्षयंतिस्म दानवान्
Then the spirits rushed forth, devouring the Dānavas.
नन्दी च कार्तिकेयश्च समाश्वस्य त्वरत्वितौ
Nandī and Kārtikeya, regaining their composure, became eager.
छिन्नभिन्ना हतैर्देत्यैः पतितैर्भक्षितैस्तदा
With demons cut, broken, slain, fallen, and devoured,
प्रविध्वस्तां तदा सेनां दृष्ट्वा सागरनंदनः 2.4.19.
Seeing the army shattered at that time, the son of the ocean—
हस्त्यश्वरथसंह्रादाः शंखभेरीस्वनास्तथा
The crashing of elephants, horses, and chariots, along with the blaring of conches and drums,
जलंधरशरव्रातैर्नीहारपटलैरिव
were drowned out by Jalandhara's volleys of arrows, like thick banks of fog.
गणेशं पंचभिर्विद्ध्वा शैलादिं नवभिः शरैः
He struck Ganesha with five arrows, and Śailādi with nine shafts.
कार्तिकेयस्तदा दैत्यं शक्त्या विव्याध सत्वरः
Then Kārtikeya swiftly pierced the demon with his spear.
ततः क्रोधपरीताक्षः कार्तिकेयं जलंधरः
Thereupon, Jalandhara, his eyes red with rage, gazed at Kārtikeya.
तथैव नंदिनं वेगादपातयत भूतले
With the same force, he struck Nandin down to the ground.
वीरभद्रस्त्रिभिर्बाणैर्हृदि विव्याध दानवम्
Vīrabhadra pierced the demon in the heart with three arrows.
ततोऽतिक्रुद्धो दैत्येंद्रः शक्तिमुद्यम्य दारुणाम्
Then the demon king, burning with fury, raised a terrible spear.
अभ्ययादथ वेगेन वीरभद्रं रुषान्वितः
He rushed at Vīrabhadra in anger, moving with great speed.
वीरभद्रः पुनस्तस्य हयान्बाणैरपातयत् 2.4.19.
But Vīrabhadra again brought down his horses with arrows.
स वीरभद्रं त्वरयाऽभिगम्य जघान दैत्यः परिघेण मूर्ध्नि
The demon quickly approached Vīrabhadra and struck him on the head with a mace.
नारद उवाच पतितं वीरभद्रं तु दृष्ट्वा रुद्रगणा भयात्
Nārada said: When the Rudra hosts saw Vīrabhadra fallen, they were seized with fear.
