दैत्यसैन्याऽऽवृतैस्तस्य विमानानां शतैस्तदा
At that time, he was encircled by hundreds of flying chariots filled with Daitya armies.
तस्योद्योगं तदा दृष्ट्वा देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः
Seeing his preparations then, the gods led by Śakra,
तदस्मद्रक्षणार्थाय जहि सागरनंदनम्
For the sake of our protection, slay the son of the ocean.
इति देववचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य वृषभध्वजः
Hearing these words of the gods, Vṛṣabhadhvaja laughed.
जलंधरः कथं विष्णो न हतः संगरे त्वया
Jalandhara, why was he not slain by you, O Viṣṇu, in battle?
न मया निहतः संख्ये त्वमेनं जहि दानवम्
He was not killed by me in combat; you must slay this Dānava.
नायमेभिर्महातेजाः शस्त्रास्त्रैर्वध्यते मया
This mighty one cannot be slain by me with weapons or missiles.
तान्यैक्यमागतानीशो दृष्ट्वा स्वं चामुचन्महः ।। 2.4.18.
Seeing them united, the Lord withdrew his own radiance.
तेनाकरोन्महादेवो महसा शस्त्रमुत्तमम्
With that radiance, Mahādeva fashioned a supreme weapon.
ततः शेषेण च तदा वज्रं च कृतवान्हरिः
Then, with Śeṣa, Hari made the thunderbolt at that time.
हस्त्यश्वरथपत्तीनां कोटिभिः परिवारितः
He was surrounded by millions of elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers.
गणाश्च समसज्जंत युद्धायाऽतित्वरान्विताः
The hosts also assembled, filled with great eagerness for battle.
अवतेरुर्गणा वेगात्कैलासाद्युद्धदुर्मदाः
The hosts, intoxicated by the prospect of battle, swiftly descended from Kailāsa.
प्रमथाधिपदैत्यानां घोरशस्त्रास्त्रसंकुलम्
The leaders of the Pramathas and the Daityas, surrounded by terrifying weapons and missiles, confronted each other.
गजाश्वरथशब्दैश्च नादिता भूर्व्यकंपत
The earth resounded and trembled with the noise of elephants, horses, and chariots.
व्यराजत नभः पूर्णमुल्काभिरिव संवृतम्
The sky shone, completely filled as if covered with blazing meteors.
वज्राहताचलशिरःशकलैरिव संवृता
It was as if the sky was covered with fragments of mountain peaks struck by thunderbolts.
वसासृङ्मांसपंकाढ्या भूरगम्याऽभवत्तदा 2.4.18.
At that time, the earth became impassable, thick with mud of flesh, blood, and marrow.
युद्धे पुनः पुनस्तत्र मृतसंजीविनीबलात् शशंसुर्देवदेवाय तत्सर्वं शुक्रचेष्टितम्
Again and again in that battle, by the power of the mṛtasaṃjīvinī, all the gods reported to Devadeva every act performed by Śukra.
अथ रुद्रमुखात्कृत्या बभूवाऽतीवभीषणा
Then, from the mouth of Rudra, a terrifying Kṛtyā was born.
सा युद्धभूमिमासाद्य भक्षयंती महासुरान्
She, reaching the battlefield, began to devour the great Asuras.
विधृतं भार्गवं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यसैन्यं गणास्तदा
Seeing the Daitya army protected by Bhārgava, the hosts at that time—
अथाभज्यत दैत्यानां सेना गणभयार्दिता भग्नां गणभयात्सेनां दृष्ट्वामर्षयुता ययुः
Then, the army of the Daityas, afflicted by fear of the hosts, was shattered; seeing their army broken by fear of the hosts, they, filled with rage, advanced.
त्रयस्ते वारयामासुर्गणसेनां महाबलाः
Three of them, possessing great strength, held back the army of the hosts.
ततो दैत्यशरौघास्ते शलभानामिव व्रजाः
Then, the torrents of Daitya arrows came forth like swarms of locusts.
गणाः शरशतैर्भिन्ना रुधिरासारवर्षिणः
The hosts, struck by hundreds of arrows, poured down streams of blood.
पतिताः पात्यमानाश्च भिन्नाश्छिन्नास्तदा गणाः 2.4.18.
Then, the hosts fell, being struck and cut down, some falling, some being hurled down.
ततः प्रभग्नं स्वबलं विलोक्य शैलादिलंबोदरकार्तिकेयाः
Then, seeing their own forces shattered, Śailādi, Lambodara, and Kārtikeya—
अमर्षादभ्यधावंत द्वंद्वयुद्धाय दानवाः
The Dānavas, enraged, rushed forward for single combat.
नंदिनं कालनेमिश्च शुम्भो लंबोदरं तथा
Nandina was challenged by Kālanemi, and Śumbha by Lambodara.
