तावत्समुद्रस्योत्संगे तं बालं स ददर्श ह
Then, at the shore of the ocean, he saw that child.
प्रणम्य शिरसा बालं तस्योत्संगे न्यवेशयत् जातकर्माऽऽदिसंस्कारान्कुरुष्वाऽद्य जगद्गुरो
Bowing his head to the child, he placed him on his lap: 'Perform the birth-rites and other sacraments today, O Teacher of the world.'
ब्रह्माणमग्रहीत्कूर्चे विधुन्वंस्तं मुहुर्मुहुः कथंचिन्मुक्तकूर्चोऽथ ब्रह्मा प्रोवाच सागरम्
He seized Brahmā by the tuft, shaking him again and again; somehow freed, Brahmā then spoke to the ocean.
तस्माज्जलंधर इति ख्यातो नाम्ना भविष्यति
Therefore, he will be known by the name Jalandhara.
अनेनैवैष तरुणः सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रपारगः
By this very means, this youth has become accomplished in all weapons and missiles.
यत एष समुद्भूतस्तत्रैवांतं गमिष्यति
Since he has arisen from there, he will also reach his end there.
आमंत्र्य सरितां नाथं ब्रह्मांतर्धानमागमत्
Having taken leave of the Lord of Rivers, Brahma then disappeared.
अथ तद्दर्शनोत्फुल्लनयनः सागरस्तदा 2.4.14.
Then, at that time, the ocean, his eyes blossoming from that vision—
ते कालनेमिप्रमुखास्ततोऽसुरास्तस्मै सुतां तां प्रददुः प्रहर्षिताः
Then those Asuras, headed by Kalanemi, joyfully gave him that daughter.
तेऽपि भूमंडलं याता निर्भयास्तमुपाश्रिताः
They too, fearless, went to the earth and took refuge with him.
कदाचिच्छिन्नशिरसं राहुं दृष्ट्वा स दैत्यराट्
Once, seeing Rahu with his head severed, the king of the Daityas—
स शशंस समुद्रस्य मथनं देवकारितम्
He reported to the ocean the churning performed by the gods.
स श्रुत्वा क्रोधरक्ताक्षः स्वपितुर्मथनं तदा
Hearing this, his eyes reddened with anger at the churning of his own father—
दूतस्त्रिविष्टपं गत्वा सुधर्मां प्राविशद्वराम्
A messenger went to heaven and entered the splendid Sudharma hall.
दूतोऽहंप्रेषितस्तेन स यदाह शृणुष्व तत्
I am a messenger sent by him; now hear what he has said.
कस्मात्त्वया मम पिता मथितः सागरोऽद्रिणा
Why did you churn my father, the ocean, with a mountain?
इति दूतवचः श्रुत्वा विस्मितस्त्रिदशाधिपः
Hearing the messenger's words, the lord of the gods was astonished.
अद्रयो मद्भयात्त्रस्ताः स्वकुक्षिस्थाः कृतास्तथा
The mountains, terrified of me, were made to remain within their own bodies.
अन्येऽपि मद्द्विषस्तेन रक्षिता दितिजाः पुरा 2.4.15.
In the same way, other Daityas, my enemies, were protected in former times.
शंखोऽप्येवं पुरा देवानद्विषत्सागरात्मजः
Likewise, in former times, Shankha, the son of the ocean, bore enmity toward the gods.
तद्गच्छ कथयस्वाऽस्य सर्वं मथनकारणम् नारद उवाच इत्थं विसर्जितो दूतस्तदेंद्रेणाऽगमद्भुवम्
Go, tell him everything—the entire reason for the churning. Nārada said: Thus dismissed by Indra, the messenger returned to earth.
तदिदं वचनं सर्वं दैत्यायाकथयत्तदा
He then related all these words to the Daitya.
दैत्यसेनासमायुक्तो ययौ योद्धुं त्रिविष्टपम्
Accompanied by the army of the Daityas, he went to fight against the realm of the gods.
तत्र युद्धे मृतान्दैत्यान्भार्गवस्तूदतिष्ठपत्
There, in that battle, Bhārgava stood reviving the Daityas who had died.
देवानपि तथा युद्धे तत्राऽजीवयदंगिराः
In the same way, Aṅgirā revived the gods who had fallen in that battle.
दृष्ट्वा देवांस्तथा युद्धे पुनरेव समुत्थितान्
Seeing the gods thus rise again in battle,
तव संजीविनीविद्या न वाऽन्यत्रेति विश्रुतम्
It became well known that your Saṃjīvinī knowledge exists nowhere else.
जीवयत्येव तच्छीघ्रं द्रोणाद्रिं त्वमपाहर
That surely brings the dead to life quickly—so take Mount Droṇa away.
प्राक्षिपत्सागरे तूर्णं पुनरागान्महाहवम् ।। 2.4.15.
He swiftly cast it into the ocean and returned again to the great battle.
अथ देवान्हतान्दृष्ट्वा द्रोणाद्रिमगमद्गुरुः
Then, seeing the gods slain, the teacher went to Mount Droṇa.
