स कदाचित्तपोविघ्नं कर्तुकामेन योगिनाम् 1.3.1.5.
Once, desiring to cause an obstacle to the yogis' austerities,
लावण्यगुणसंपूर्णामालोक्य कमलेक्षणाम्
Seeing her, endowed with beauty and virtues, with lotus-like eyes,
स्प्रष्टुकामं तमालोक्य ब्रह्माणं कमलासनम्
Seeing Brahma, the lotus-seated one, wishing to touch her,
अस्यां प्रदक्षिणां भक्त्या कुर्वाणायां प्रजापतेः
As Prajapati performed circumambulation of her with devotion,
सा बाला पक्षिणी भूत्वा गगनं समगाहत
That young girl, having become a bird, soared into the sky.
शरणं याचमाना सा शोणाद्रिमिममाश्रयत्
Seeking refuge, she took shelter on this very Śoṇa mountain.
रक्ष मामरुणाद्रीश शरण्य शरणागताम्
Protect me, O Lord of Aruṇādri, refuge of those who seek sanctuary.
उदभूत्स्थावराल्लिंगाद्व्याधः कश्चिद्धनुर्द्धरः
From the liṅga among the immovable beings, a certain hunter bearing a bow appeared.
निषादे पुरतो दृष्टे मोहस्तस्य ननाश हि
When the hunter was seen before him, his delusion was indeed destroyed.
नमश्चक्रे शरण्याय शोणाद्रिपतये तदा
Then he bowed to the Lord of Śoṇa mountain, the giver of refuge.
अरुणाचलरूपाय भक्ववश्याय शंभवे 1.3.1.5.
To him who is the form of Aruṇācala, who is to be worshipped by the devotees, to Śambhu.
त्वदन्यः कः प्रभुः कर्तुमशक्यं चापि देहिनाम्
Who other than you, O Lord, is able to accomplish what is impossible for embodied beings?
अन्यं वा सृज विश्वात्मन्ब्रह्माणं लोकसृष्टये
Or else, O Soul of the Universe, create another Brahmā for the creation of the worlds.
उवाच करुणामूर्तिर्भूत्वा चंद्रार्द्धशेखरः
The embodiment of compassion, the crescent-moon-crested one, spoke.
कं वा रागादयो दोषा न बाधेरन्प्रभुस्थितम्
What faults such as passion could ever trouble the Lord who is established?
भजस्व तैजसं लिंगं सर्वदोषनिवृत्तये
Worship the fiery liṅga for the removal of all faults.
विनश्यति क्षणात्सर्वमरुणाचलदर्शनात्
All is destroyed in an instant by the sight of Aruṇācala.
अरुणाद्रिरयं नृणां सर्वकल्मषनाशनः
This Aruṇādri is the destroyer of all sins for men.
संदृश्यः कश्चिदेवाहमरुणाद्रिरयं स्वयम्
I myself am this Aruṇādri, to be seen by some indeed.
भवेत्सर्वाघनाशश्च लाभश्च ज्ञानचक्षुषः
There will be destruction of all great sins and the attainment of the eye of knowledge.
अत्र स्नातः पुरा ब्रह्मन्मोहोऽगाज्जगतीपतेः 1.3.1.5.
Here, having bathed formerly, O Brahman, the delusion of the Lord of the world departed.
मौनी प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा विश्वात्मन्भव विज्वरः
Having circumambulated in silence, O Soul of the Universe, be free from fever.
इति वचनमुदीर्य विश्वनाथं स्थितमरुणाचलरूपतो महेशम्
Having spoken these words, he beheld Maheśa, Lord of the Universe, standing there in the form of the Aruṇācala mountain.
इममरुणगिरीशमेष वेधा यमनियमादिविशुद्धचित्तयोगः
This Lord of Aruṇagiri, the Creator, is to be realized by the discipline of mind purified through restraint, observance, and the like.
शेषपर्यंकशयने कदाचिन्नैव बुध्यत
While lying upon the serpent-bed, he did not awaken for some time.
तमसा पूरितं विश्वमपज्ञातमलक्षणम्
The universe was filled with darkness, its characteristics unrecognized and indistinct.
अहो कष्टमिदं रूपं तमसा विश्वमोहनम्
Alas, how grievous is this state, which, through darkness, bewilders the whole world!
ज्योतिषः पुरुषं पूर्णमपश्यंतं सुरा अपि
Even the gods could not see the complete Person of Light.
इति निश्चित्य मनसा देवदेवमुमापतिम्
Thus, resolving in their minds, they approached Umā's consort, the God of gods.
ततः प्रसन्नो भगवांस्तेजोराशिर्महेश्वरः
Then the blessed Lord Maheśvara, the mass of radiance, became pleased.
