समतीतं भविष्यं च कुलानामयुतं नरः
A man liberates countless generations of his lineage, both past and future.
प्रयांति पितरो हृष्टा मम लोके ह्यतंद्रिताः
His ancestors, delighted, depart to my realm without delay.
कृत्वापि पातकं घोरं ब्रह्महत्यादिकं नरः
Even if a man has committed terrible sins, such as killing a Brahmin,
या तिथिः श्रूयते देवि कृष्णपक्षे त्रयोदशी ५.२.८३.
O Devi, the thirteenth day in the dark fortnight is renowned.
येऽर्चयंति नरास्तस्यां देवं बिल्वेश्वरं प्रिये
Those men who worship the god Bilveśvara on that day, beloved,
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा यत्पापं समुपार्जितम्
Whatever sin has been accumulated through action, thought, or speech,
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
This, O Devi, has been told to you—the power that destroys sin.
जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिस्फोटनं शृणु पार्वति
Hear, O Pārvatī, about birth, death, old age, disease, and destruction.
अयोध्यायामतिख्यातकुलोत्पन्नश्च पार्थिवः
In Ayodhyā, a king was born in a renowned lineage.
मृगमनुससाराथ मृगो दूरमपासरत्
He pursued a deer, and the deer fled far away.
तदाध्वनि जातश्रमः क्षुत्तृष्णाभिभूतः कस्मिंश्चिद्वनोद्देशे नीलवनमपश्यच्चाविवेश
On that journey, exhausted and overcome by hunger and thirst, he saw a blue forest in some region and entered it.
तस्य वनखण्डस्य दक्षिणभागे सरो दृष्ट्वा साश्व एव व्यगाहत
In the southern part of that forest, seeing a lake, he entered it along with his horse.
अथाश्वस्थः सन्मृणालमश्वस्याग्रतो निक्षिप्य पुष्करिणीं समुपाविशत्
Then, having recovered, he placed the horse's bridle before it and sat by the lotus pond.
शयितस्ततः शयानो गीतमशृणोत्
Lying down there, as he rested, he heard a song.
स श्रुत्वाचिंतयन्नेह मनुष्यगतिं प्रपश्यामि
Hearing it, he thought, 'Here I perceive the presence of humans.'
कस्य खल्वयं गीतशब्द इत्यवलोकयामास
He wondered, 'Whose is this sound of singing?' and looked around.
अथापश्यत्कन्यां परमरूपदर्शनीयां पुष्पाणि विचिन्वंतीं चाथ राजा समीपे पर्यक्रामत् ।। ५.२.८४.
Then he saw a maiden of extraordinary beauty gathering flowers, and the king approached her.
तामब्रवीद्राजा कस्यासि त्वं कन्या परमरूपदर्शनीया पुष्पाणि विचिन्वती
The king spoke to her: 'Whose daughter are you, maiden of extraordinary beauty, gathering flowers?'
साथ राजसमीपे गत्वेति प्रोवाच कन्यास्मीति
Then, approaching the king, she said, 'I am a maiden.'
राजोवाच अर्थी तवास्मीति
The king said, 'I am your suitor.'
अथोवाच कन्या
Then the maiden spoke.
तां राजा समपृच्छत्कस्ते समय इति
The king asked her, 'What is your condition?'
ततः कन्या तमुवाच नोदकं दर्शयितव्यमिति
Then the maiden said to him, 'Water must not be shown.'
राजा बाढमित्युक्ता तां समागम्य तया सहास्ते
The king replied, 'Agreed,' and, joining her, remained with her.
तत्रैवासन्ने राजनि सेना त्वागच्छत् तया सहोपविष्टं राजानं परिवार्य चातिष्ठत्
While the king was still nearby, the army arrived; together with her, the king sat, and the army surrounded and stood by him.
सभाजितश्च राजा तथैव शिबि कया प्रायात्
The king was honored, and Shibi departed in the same manner.
किमत्र प्रयोजनं विद्यते इत्यब्रुवंस्ताः स्त्रियो पूर्वमेव पश्यामस्तदुदकं नात्राश्रियत इति ।। ५.२.८४.
The women said, 'What purpose is there here? We have already seen that water; it is not esteemed here.'
अथामा त्यश्च निरुदकं कारयित्वा दारुवृक्षं वृद्धपुष्पफलं शरद्युपलभ्य राजानामब्रवीत्
Then Amātya, having made the place waterless, found a wooden tree, aged, with flowers and fruit, in autumn, and spoke to the kings.
स तस्य वचनात्त यैव सह देव्या वनं प्राविशत्
By his words, he entered the forest with the queen.
सकलत्रस्तस्मिन्वने रम्ये तयैव सह रेमे
In that delightful forest, with his wife, he enjoyed himself.
