By merely hearing of whom, a man would not remain embodied—
Of Brahmā, who desired to create, in the interval between the minds of Manu and Vivasvat—
From his left thumb was born a wife for that great-souled one.
All those maidens, flawless in form and lotus-eyed—
He gave ten to Dharma, and thirteen to Kaśyapa.
Rohiṇī became the beloved of him, the Moon, always.
The Moon was also cursed in this way by Dakṣa, son of Pracetas.
I was not invited by Dakṣa, O daughter of the Mountain, due to delusion.
Then the fire-god, engaged, carried the offerings, impelled by mantras.
Remembering the former enmity, I was informed by you, beloved.
You are the sacrifice, you are the vaṣaṭ-call, you are the hotṛ, and you are indeed the adhvaryu.
This Agni, out of fear, carries the shares of the gods.
Remembering the former enmity, he will not give, being uncommanded.
And the gods who were assembled at Dakṣa's sacrifice, O Śaṅkara—
O beautiful-faced one, when you spoke thus, I too replied to you.
The fire acted according to command, and the gods became playthings, beloved.
With a furrowed brow upon her forehead, exhaling again and again,
As she was being pressed there, O daughter of the mountain, at the tip of her nose—
With a lizard-shaped ring bound on her finger, and a girdle fastened around her armor,
She was thousand-faced, hundred-armed, with a thousand legs and a vast belly.
O goddess, seeing that form of darkness you created—
I created a man, terrifying to behold; command me, O lord of the gods, what shall I do, master of the world?
Then, O goddess, knowing your intention, I gave the order.
By my command, Vīrabhadra, together with Bhadrakālī,
Destroy, O chief of the hosts, the sacrifice along with its attendants.
And you, too, Bhadrakālī, were given a terrifying army.
Then those two were surrounded by that great army.
O goddess, surrounded by gods and by the officiating Brahmins, they confidently drank the soma, purified by mantra, at the sacrifice.
The lord of the gods, with three eyes and a trident,
With the troop called Yama, shining like Yama himself,
