ददामि वित्तमधिकं मुच्यतां द्विजसत्तमः
I will give additional wealth; let the eminent twice-born be freed.
गृहं च कल्पितं शुभ्रं पुष्पधृपादिवा सितम्
A splendid house was prepared, white as if adorned with flowers and other decorations.
तस्य पुण्यस्य माहात्म्याद्गता स्वर्गमनुत्तमम्
By the greatness of his merit, he attained the highest heaven.
परद्रव्यपरा दुष्टा शौचाचारविवर्जिता
Wicked women, intent on others' wealth, devoid of purity and proper conduct.
पाणिग्रहणधर्मेण वर्जिता शापतः प्रभो
Excluded from the rite of marriage by the force of a curse, O Lord.
कथं जन्म न मे भूयात्कथं मुक्तिर्भवेन्मम
How can I avoid rebirth? How can liberation be attained by me?
ममोपदेशात्तन्वंगि लिंगस्यैकस्य दर्शनात्
By my instruction, O slender-bodied one, and by the sight of a single linga,
लभ्यते सहसा धर्म एतदिच्छामि वेदितुम्
Righteousness is quickly obtained; I wish to know this.
सर्वेषामेव जंतूनां हेतुर्मोक्षस्य सर्वदा
The cause of liberation for all creatures, at all times,
तस्मिन्क्षेत्रवरे पुण्ये स्थाने योजनविस्तृते तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण मुक्तिमाप्स्यसि पिंगले
In that excellent, sacred field, vast as a yojana, merely by seeing it, you will attain liberation, O Pingala.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मस्य च यशस्विनि ददर्श परया भक्त्या पस्पर्श च पुनःपुनः
Hearing those words and the dharma, O illustrious one, she beheld it with supreme devotion and touched it again and again.
दर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य तस्मिल्लिंगे लयं गता
By the sight of that linga, she merged into the linga there.
अन्यजन्मनि पापिष्ठा मुक्ता त्वं पिंगलेक्षणा ।। 5.2.81.
In another birth, though most sinful, you are freed, O Pingala-eyed one.
अतो लोकेषु विख्यातः पिंगलेश्वरसंज्ञकः
Therefore, in the worlds, he became renowned as Pingaleshvara.
दिशि पश्यंति ये गत्वा पूर्वस्यां पिंगलेश्वरम्
Those who go to the eastern direction and see Pingaleshvara,
देवा वश्या भविष्यंति स्वर्गस्तेषां न संशयः
The gods will be obedient to them; heaven is assured for them, without doubt.
धर्मो धनेन सहितः कुले तेषां न नश्यति पितॄणामक्षया तृप्तिर्भविष्यति न संशयः
Righteousness, united with wealth, does not perish in their lineage; the satisfaction of the ancestors will be inexhaustible—of this there is no doubt.
अश्वमेधसहस्रेण यत्पुण्यं समुदाहृतम्
The merit that is declared to arise from a thousand horse sacrifices—
यानि लिंगानि क्षेत्रेऽस्मिन्गोप्यानि प्रकटानि च
Whatever liṅgas, both hidden and manifest, are in this field—
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
This, O Goddess, I have told you: the power that destroys sin.
यस्याः श्रवणमात्रेण न नरः कायवान्भवेत्
By merely hearing of whom, a man would not remain embodied—
ब्रह्मणः सृष्टिकामस्य मनोवर्वैस्वतेंऽतरे
Of Brahmā, who desired to create, in the interval between the minds of Manu and Vivasvat—
वामादजायतांगुष्ठाद्भार्या तस्य महात्मनः
From his left thumb was born a wife for that great-souled one.
ताः सर्वाश्चानवद्यांगीः कन्याः कमललोचनाः
All those maidens, flawless in form and lotus-eyed—
ददौ स दश धर्माय कश्यपाय त्रयोदश
He gave ten to Dharma, and thirteen to Kaśyapa.
रोहिणी वल्लभा जाता तस्य चन्द्रस्य सर्वदा
Rohiṇī became the beloved of him, the Moon, always.
चंद्रेणापि तथा शप्तो दक्षः प्राचेतसः कृतः
The Moon was also cursed in this way by Dakṣa, son of Pracetas.
नामंत्रितोऽहं मोहेन दक्षेण पर्वतात्मजे
I was not invited by Dakṣa, O daughter of the Mountain, due to delusion.
हव्यवाहस्तदा युक्तो वहन्मंत्रैः समीरितः
Then the fire-god, engaged, carried the offerings, impelled by mantras.
स्मरंत्या पूर्ववैरं तु विज्ञप्तोऽहं त्वया प्रिये ५.२.८२.
Remembering the former enmity, I was informed by you, beloved.
