तस्मात्पुत्रो मदीयस्तु सर्वभागविवर्जितः
Therefore, my son shall be deprived of all prosperity.
इति शप्तस्तदा जातो वडलो भोगवर्जितः
Thus, being cursed at that time, Vaḍala was born bereft of enjoyment.
पीडितः क्षयरोगेण न शशाक विचेष्टितुम्
Afflicted by the disease of consumption, he was unable to move.
चिंतयामास सहसा शापमत्यद्भुतं महत् 5.2.75.
He suddenly reflected upon the curse, so wondrous and great.
कथं शप्तोऽस्मि तातेन मणिभद्रेण वल्लभः
How have I been cursed by my father Maṇibhadra, though dear to him?
धन्योऽसौ मणिभद्रोऽपि मत्तातो येन भूतले
Blessed is that Maṇibhadra, my father, by whom I was begotten on earth.
वडलेन पुनः प्रोक्तं धन्योऽहं प्रभुकारणात्
Again Vaḍala said, 'I am blessed because of my master’s action.'
अन्यायेन यथाकामं प्रारब्धः संचितश्चिरम्
By unjust means, as I wished, I undertook what had long been accumulated.
एवं विलपतस्तस्य वडलस्य वरानने ददर्श पुत्रं पंग्वंधं क्षयरोगप्रपीडितम्
Thus, as Vaḍala lamented in this way, O beautiful-faced one, he saw his son, crippled and afflicted with consumption.
निःश्वसंतं सुदुःखार्त्तं विल पंतं पुनःपुनः मया कुपित्रा हा वत्स शप्तस्त्वं प्रभुकारणात्
Sighing, greatly distressed, and lamenting again and again, 'By me, angered, alas child, you have been cursed because of the master.'
त्वयेयं नलिनी रम्या धन दस्यातिवल्लभा
This delightful Nalinī, exceedingly dear to the Lord of Wealth, was enjoyed by you.
तस्मात्पुत्र मया शप्तो न मिथ्या स भविष्यति
Therefore, my son, I have cursed you; it shall not be in vain.
स्वाम्यर्थे यः प्रियान्प्राणान्परित्यजति संगरे
He who gives up dear life in battle for the sake of his master,
न मन्त्रसाध्यः शापोयं नौषधेन व्रतेन च 5.2.75.
This curse cannot be removed by mantra, medicine, or vow.
मया श्रुतं शक्रलोके पुराणं स्कंदकीर्त्तितम्
I have heard in Indra's realm the ancient tale of Skanda's glory.
प्रभावो वर्णितस्तेन महाकालवनस्य च
There, the power of the great Kāla forest was described.
विद्यते व्याधिशमनं रूपसौभाग्यदायकम्
It possesses the ability to cure disease and grant beauty.
इत्युक्त्वा मणिभद्रेण समानीतः सुतस्तदा
Having spoken thus, Maṇibhadra brought the son at that time.
स्पर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य चक्षुष्मान्रूपवान्बली
By touching that liṅga, he became endowed with sight, beauty, and strength.
दृष्ट्वा सुमहदाश्चर्यं मणिभद्रेण पार्वति चक्षुष्मान्वडलो जातो लिंगस्यास्य प्रभावतः
Seeing this great wonder, Pārvatī with Maṇibhadra beheld him: through the power of the liṅga, he became sighted and strong.
अद्यप्रभृति देवोऽयं वडलेश्वरसंज्ञकः
From today, this god will be known as Vaḍaleśvara.
पूजयिष्यंति ये देवं वडलेश्वरसंज्ञकम्
Those who worship the god called Vaḍaleśvara,
दृष्टो हरति पापानि स्पृष्टो राज्यं प्रयच्छति
Seeing him removes sins; touching him grants sovereignty.
कार्त्तिके शुक्लपक्षस्य तिथिर्वै द्वादशी भवेत् 5.2.75.
The twelfth day of the bright fortnight in Kārtika is the proper date.
दानं तैः सततं दत्तं ते यांति परमं पदम्
Those who always give gifts attain the highest state.
तपस्तप्तं भवेत्तैस्तु ते मुक्ता नात्र संशयः
Those who perform austerity become liberated; there is no doubt about this.
गाणपत्या भविष्यंति शंकरस्य सदा प्रियाः जायंते मानवा लोके वडलेश्वरदर्शनात्
They will become followers of Gaṇapati, always dear to Śaṅkara; men are born in the world from seeing Vaḍaleśvara.
गर्भवासे महाकष्टे यस्य वासो न रोचते
In the great hardship of the womb, for whom the dwelling does not please,
न लिंगेन विना सिद्धिर्दुर्लभं परमं पदम्
Without the liṅga, attainment and the supreme state are difficult.
लिंगार्चन विहीनानां सिद्धिश्चापि सुदुर्लभा
For those lacking worship of the liṅga, attainment is indeed very rare.
