राक्षसैः किंनरैश्चैव गुप्तां खङ्गधरैः सदा
Guarded always by rakshasas and kinnaras wielding swords.
प्रियया सहितो रेमे स्थाने गुप्ते मनोहरे
He delighted there with his beloved, in that charming and well-protected place.
तत्र गुप्ता रणे शूरा राक्षसा रणकोविदाः
There, brave rakshasas skilled in battle were stationed as guards.
ते तु दृष्ट्वैव वडलं मणिभद्रसुतं प्रिये 5.2.75.
But when they saw Vadala, the son of Manibhadra, dear one—
केतकीगर्भपत्राभैर्दंतैर्दिव्यतराननम्
With teeth like the inner petals of the ketaki flower, his face was exceedingly radiant.
भार्यासहायमुन्मत्तं पर्यंके च स्थितं सदा
Accompanied by his wife, intoxicated, he was always seated on the couch.
मा वीरानेन मार्गेण सभार्यो गन्तुमर्हसि
Heroes, you must not proceed on this path together with your wife.
देवा देवर्षयो यक्षा गन्धर्वाः किंनरास्तथा
The gods, divine sages, yakshas, gandharvas, and likewise kinnaras—
नेह शक्यं विनादेशाद्विहर्तुं क्रीडितुं चिरम्
Here, without permission, it is not possible to wander or sport for long.
येनकेनचिदन्यायादवमन्य धनेश्वरम्
If anyone, by any means, acts improperly or disrespects the Lord of Wealth—
एवं स राक्षसैर्घोरैर्वडलो विनिवारितः
Thus, Vadala was restrained by the fierce rakshasas.
कदर्थीकृत्य तु स तान्राक्षसान्भीमविक्रमः
But having harassed those rakshasas, he, of terrible valor—
गृह्णीत बध्नीत निकृन्ततैनं पिबाम खादाम च वृत्तहीनम्
Seize him, bind him, cut him down—let us drink and devour this one devoid of virtue!
ततः स गुर्वीं यमदण्डकल्पां महागदां कांचनपट्टनद्धाम् 5.2.75.
Then he took up a great mace, heavy as the rod of Yama, bound with golden bands.
ते तस्य वीर्यं च वलं च दृष्ट्वा विद्याबलं बाहुबलं तथैव
They, seeing his strength and might, his power of knowledge and the force of his arms likewise,
विदार्यमाणास्तत एव तूर्णमाकाशमास्थाय विमूढसंज्ञाः
When they were swiftly torn apart by him, they took to the sky, their senses bewildered.
स शक्रवद्दानवदैत्यसंघान्विक्रम्य जित्वा मदनाभितप्तः
He, like Indra, overcame and defeated the hosts of Dānavas and Daityas, though afflicted by the arrows of love.
ततस्तु ते रक्षपालाः समेत्य धनेश्वरं वै वडलेन नुन्नाः
Then those guardians of the demons, gathering together, were struck down by Vaḍala before the Lord of Wealth.
तेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा मणिभद्रो महायशाः
Hearing their words, the illustrious Maṇibhadra,
यस्मात्सा नलिनी रम्या सेविता वडलेन तु
Because that delightful Nalinī was enjoyed by Vaḍala,
तस्मात्पुत्रो मदीयस्तु सर्वभागविवर्जितः
Therefore, my son shall be deprived of all prosperity.
इति शप्तस्तदा जातो वडलो भोगवर्जितः
Thus, being cursed at that time, Vaḍala was born bereft of enjoyment.
पीडितः क्षयरोगेण न शशाक विचेष्टितुम्
Afflicted by the disease of consumption, he was unable to move.
चिंतयामास सहसा शापमत्यद्भुतं महत् 5.2.75.
He suddenly reflected upon the curse, so wondrous and great.
कथं शप्तोऽस्मि तातेन मणिभद्रेण वल्लभः
How have I been cursed by my father Maṇibhadra, though dear to him?
धन्योऽसौ मणिभद्रोऽपि मत्तातो येन भूतले
Blessed is that Maṇibhadra, my father, by whom I was begotten on earth.
वडलेन पुनः प्रोक्तं धन्योऽहं प्रभुकारणात्
Again Vaḍala said, 'I am blessed because of my master’s action.'
अन्यायेन यथाकामं प्रारब्धः संचितश्चिरम्
By unjust means, as I wished, I undertook what had long been accumulated.
एवं विलपतस्तस्य वडलस्य वरानने ददर्श पुत्रं पंग्वंधं क्षयरोगप्रपीडितम्
Thus, as Vaḍala lamented in this way, O beautiful-faced one, he saw his son, crippled and afflicted with consumption.
निःश्वसंतं सुदुःखार्त्तं विल पंतं पुनःपुनः मया कुपित्रा हा वत्स शप्तस्त्वं प्रभुकारणात्
Sighing, greatly distressed, and lamenting again and again, 'By me, angered, alas child, you have been cursed because of the master.'
