नश्यतां त्रिदशेंद्राणां पृष्ठतः शरवृष्टिभिः
'Let the lords of the immortals perish, struck from behind by showers of arrows.'
वर्माणि च विचित्राणि मुकुटानि महांति च
'Their wondrous armor and great crowns,'
गजाश्च मदसंभिन्नकपोलाः कोटिशः सुराः 5.2.72.
'And elephants, their cheeks split by intoxication, by the millions, O gods,'
विबुधा ध्वस्तसन्नाहा विगजा विपदातिनः
'The wise ones, their armor shattered, their elephants lost, overwhelmed by calamity.'
ततो दैत्याधिपो मानी परिवृत्तो महारणात्
Then the proud lord of the Daityas turned back from the great battlefield.
वंद्यमानो मुनिगणैः स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः
He was being praised by groups of sages and extolled by great seers.
तत्र सर्वर्द्धिसंपूर्णमासनं हेमभूषणम् तत्रोपविष्टः शुशुभे दैत्यराजो महायशाः
There, upon a throne adorned with gold and filled with every prosperity, the illustrious king of the Daityas sat and shone.
दिव्यचंदनपुष्टांगः सुरपुष्पसमुज्ज्वलः मृतोत्थितैस्तथा दैत्यैर्दैत्याधीशैरधिष्ठितः
His body was anointed with divine sandalwood, radiant with celestial flowers, and he was attended by Daityas and Daitya lords who had risen from death.
क्रतुभिर्मूर्त्तिमद्भिश्च सेव्य मानो महाबलः
The mighty one was worshipped with embodied sacrifices and served with devotion.
तत्र श्रीरतुला लोके तत्र लक्ष्मीर्निरर्गला
There, in that world, was incomparable fortune; there, prosperity was unimpeded.
एवं स दैत्यनृपतिः सभृत्यस्तत्र मोदते
Thus, that Daitya king, together with his attendants, rejoiced there.
तयोरिति वचः श्रुत्वा स देवः पुरुषोत्तमः
Hearing these words of theirs, that supreme god among men—
चंद्रसूर्यौ मया ज्ञातं शंबरस्य विचेष्टितम् 5.2.72.
O Moon and Sun, I have known the actions of Shambara.
शंबराय पुरा क्षिप्तं वज्रं कुलिशपाणिना
Formerly, a thunderbolt was hurled at Shambara by the wielder of the thunderbolt.
गम्यतां च मयाज्ञप्तौ महाका लवनोत्तमे
Now, by my command, go to the excellent Lavana, O great ones.
तत्रानंतो महाकालो लिंगरूपो महेश्वरः
There, Ananta, Mahakala, and Maheshvara in the form of a linga are present.
तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण कृतकृत्यौ भविष्यथः भविष्यति न संदेहस्तस्मात्तत्रैव गम्य ताम्
By merely seeing him, you will have accomplished your purpose; there is no doubt you will succeed, so go there at once.
इत्युक्तौ वासुदेवेन चंद्रसूर्यौ यशस्विनि
Thus addressed by Vasudeva, the glorious Moon and Sun—
तत्र दृष्ट्वा महादेवं तेजसो राशिमव्य यम्
There, seeing Mahadeva, the unfailing mass of brilliance—
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वाणी लिंगमध्यात्समुत्थिता
At that moment, a voice arose from the midst of the linga.
हतः स शंबरो दैत्यो गतौ तौ चन्द्रभास्करौ
That Daitya, Shambara, was slain, and the Moon and Sun departed.
राहुकेतू ग्रहांते तु कृतौ समयपूर्वकौ
Rahu and Ketu, at the end of the planets, were assigned their positions according to agreement.
स्वं स्वं स्थानं गताः सर्वे लोकपाला मुदा युताः 5.2.72.
All the guardians of the worlds, filled with joy, returned to their respective places.
गगने ग्रहनक्षत्रैः सहितौ विचरिष्यथः
You two will move in the sky together with the planets and stars.
इत्युक्तौ चन्द्रसूर्यौ तु तया वाण्या वरानने
Thus addressed by that speech, O radiant-faced one, were the Moon and the Sun.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवा विमानस्था समागताः
Meanwhile, the gods assembled, standing in their celestial vehicles.
ज्ञात्वा लिंगस्य माहात्म्यं नाम चकुः समाहिताः
Knowing the greatness of the linga, they spoke its name with concentration.
चन्द्रादित्येश्वरंनाम ख्यातिं यास्यति भूतले दग्धो भृत्यजनैः सार्द्धं चन्द्रसूर्यानुसेवनात्
The name 'Candrādityeśvara' will become renowned on earth, burned along with servants through the service of the Moon and Sun.
इत्युक्त्वा त्रिदशाः सवें समीपे सर्वतः स्थिताः
Having spoken thus, all the gods stood together on every side nearby.
चन्द्रादित्यौ च तत्रस्थौ स्थितौ लिंगसमीपतः
The Moon and Sun also stood there, beside the linga.
