For the destruction of the enemies of the immortals, and for your prowess in great battles,
Hearing the hymn composed by the Moon and the Sun, the god Janārdana,
Viṣṇu spoke: 'Welcome, O Moon and Sun, you both are worthy of praise.'
Thus addressed by Nārāyaṇa, the Moon and Sun replied,
'We do not know where they have gone; we ourselves have been lost despite our efforts.'
'The gods have been defeated by Śambara, and he is seen everywhere.'
'Let the lords of the immortals perish, struck from behind by showers of arrows.'
'Their wondrous armor and great crowns,'
'And elephants, their cheeks split by intoxication, by the millions, O gods,'
'The wise ones, their armor shattered, their elephants lost, overwhelmed by calamity.'
Then the proud lord of the Daityas turned back from the great battlefield.
He was being praised by groups of sages and extolled by great seers.
There, upon a throne adorned with gold and filled with every prosperity, the illustrious king of the Daityas sat and shone.
His body was anointed with divine sandalwood, radiant with celestial flowers, and he was attended by Daityas and Daitya lords who had risen from death.
The mighty one was worshipped with embodied sacrifices and served with devotion.
There, in that world, was incomparable fortune; there, prosperity was unimpeded.
Thus, that Daitya king, together with his attendants, rejoiced there.
Hearing these words of theirs, that supreme god among men—
O Moon and Sun, I have known the actions of Shambara.
Formerly, a thunderbolt was hurled at Shambara by the wielder of the thunderbolt.
Now, by my command, go to the excellent Lavana, O great ones.
There, Ananta, Mahakala, and Maheshvara in the form of a linga are present.
By merely seeing him, you will have accomplished your purpose; there is no doubt you will succeed, so go there at once.
Thus addressed by Vasudeva, the glorious Moon and Sun—
There, seeing Mahadeva, the unfailing mass of brilliance—
At that moment, a voice arose from the midst of the linga.
