आसां च संगमो यस्तु स प्रयागो बुधैः स्मृतः
The confluence of these rivers is called Prayāga by the wise.
सोद्य प्रभृति देवोऽयं प्रयागेश्वरसंज्ञकः
From this day forth, this deity is known as Prayāgeśvara.
अत्रागत्य प्रपश्यंति ये प्रयागेश्वरं ततः
Those who come here and behold Prayāgeśvara,
कुलं च तारितं तेषां पैतृकं मातृकं तथा जायते नात्र संदेहः प्रयागेश्वरदर्शनात्
Their paternal and maternal lineages are liberated; there is no doubt that this occurs by seeing Prayāgeśvara.
गंगायां च प्रयागे च देवदारुवने शुभे
In the Gaṅgā, at Prayāga, and in the auspicious Devadāru forest,
त्र्यंबके धौतपापे च महेन्द्रे भैरवे तथा
At Tryambaka, Dhautapāpa, Mahendra, and also at Bhairava,
एतेषां दर्शनेनैव या सिद्धिर्द्वादशाब्दिका
By merely seeing these places, one attains the accomplishment gained in twelve years.
ये पश्यंति चतुर्द्दश्यामष्टम्यां च विशेषतः । भक्त्या च नियमं कृत्वा प्रयागेश्वरसंज्ञकम्
Those who behold Prayāgeśvara, especially on the fourteenth or eighth lunar days, with devotion and discipline,
न तेषां पुनरावृत्तिः कल्पकोटिशतैरपि 5.2.71.
There is no return for them, even after hundreds of millions of aeons.
कलास्तिस्रो भविष्यंति लिंगेऽस्मिन्मोक्षदे शुभे
Three portions will arise in this auspicious linga, which grants liberation.
एवमुक्त्वा स्तुता गंगा यमुना च सरस्वती
Having spoken thus, Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati were praised.
देवाः प्रहृष्टाः शकाद्याः प्रयागेश्वरसंज्ञकम्
The delighted gods, including Shaka and others, called it Prayageshvara.
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
O Devi, this power, which destroys sin, has been told to you.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण कृतकृत्यो नरो भवेत्
By merely seeing it, a person becomes fulfilled in all duties.
शंबरेण पुरा देवि निर्जिताः संगरे सुराः
Once, O Devi, the gods were defeated in battle by Shambara.
ग्रस्तं च राहुणा दृष्ट्वा शशांकं भयविह्वलम्
Seeing the moon seized by Rahu, terrified and distressed,
वहारुण रथं शीघ्रं यत्र युद्धं न विद्यते
Aruna drove the chariot swiftly to where there was no battle.
राहुर्दंष्ट्राकरालस्तु स तृतीयो भयंकरः
Rahu, fierce with dreadful fangs, was the third terrifying one.
स च न ज्ञायते शक्रः क्व गतो वरुणो रणे
And it was not known where Indra or Varuna had gone in the battle.
एवमुक्तोऽरुणो रुग्णो रविणा रणमध्यतः
Thus addressed, Aruna, weakened, was led away by Ravi from the midst of battle.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे चन्द्रः समायातस्तु तत्क्षणात्
Meanwhile, the moon arrived at that very moment.
संत्रस्तः स विलोलाक्षः क्षणमात्रमचेतनः
He was frightened, his eyes unsteady, and for a moment lost consciousness.
शंबरेण रणे रुद्धा रुद्राश्च भयविद्रुताः 5.2.72.
Rudras were restrained in battle by Shambara and fled in fear.
साध्याः सर्वे भयत्रस्ता गता यत्र न दानवाः
All the Sadhyas, terrified by fear, went where there were no Danavas.
व्यधमत्सर्वगात्राणि वर्माणि च जनक्षये
All their limbs and armor were shattered in the destruction of people.
पृष्ठतो निजघानाथ निकृत्ताश्च सहस्रशः
From behind, he struck and cut down thousands.
आसुरं रूपमास्थाय प्राणत्राणपरायणः
Assuming a demonic form, intent on preserving his life,
इत्युक्तं निशिनाथेन भयभीतेन पार्वति
Thus was it spoken by the terrified lord of night, O Pārvatī,
यत्र देवो जगन्नाथो गरुडस्थो जनार्दनः
There, the god, lord of the universe, Janārdana, seated upon Garuḍa,
मंदरे सुरनारीणां नंदने वरचन्दने स्तुतिं तौ चक्रतुर्देवौ चन्द्रसूर्यौ यशस्विनि
On Mandara, among the celestial women, in Nandana, with excellent sandalwood, the two illustrious gods, Moon and Sun, offered praise, O renowned one.
