धन्योऽयमतिपुण्योऽयं योऽयं यौवनगोचरः
Blessed is he, supremely fortunate is he, who moves within the realm of youth.
अभीष्टा कस्यचित्कांता कांतः कस्याश्चिदीप्सितः
Someone's beloved is desired by another, and another is the beloved of someone else.
ममायं वल्लभो राजा न चाहं नृपवल्लभा
This king is my dear one, but I am not dear to the king.
यद्यद्य स महीपालो न मया संगमेष्यति
If today that lord of the earth does not unite with me—
रमणीयमभूद्यत्तु पुंस्कोकिलनिनादितम् 5.2.61.
Even the place, once delightful and filled with the calls of cuckoos, has lost its charm.
इत्थं सा मदनाविष्टा विलपन्ती पुनःपुनः
Thus, overcome by love, she lamented again and again.
मेखलाजिनकौपीनदण्डकाष्ठोपजीवनम्
She lived by means of a girdle, a deer skin, a loincloth, a staff, and a piece of wood.
उदयादित्यसंकाशं विभावसुसमद्युतिम्
She approached one who shone like the rising sun, radiant as blazing fire.
विनयेनोपसंयम्य प्रणिपत्याभिवाद्य च
With humility, she drew near, bowed down, and offered her respects.
भगवन्काशिराजस्य सुताहमतिवल्लभा
Revered one, I am the dearly beloved daughter of the king of Kashi.
अश्ववाहनसंज्ञेन नृपेणोढा महामुने
I was married by the king known as Ashvavahana, O great sage.
सा किमर्थं न चाभीष्टा जाताऽहं तस्य भूपतेः
Why, then, have I not become dear to that lord of the earth?
दुर्भगाहं कथं जाता कर्मणा केन तापस सौभाग्यं च कथं मे स्यादिति सत्यं च कथ्यताम्
How did I become so unfortunate, O ascetic? By what deed? And how may I obtain good fortune? Let the truth be told.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स मुनिः संशितव्रतः
Hearing her words, that sage of firm vows—
पाणिग्रहणकाले त्वं ग्रहैः पापैर्विलोकिता 5.2.61.
At the time of marriage, you were observed by malefic planets.
तेन ते वल्लभो राजा न त्वं भूपस्य वल्लभा पप्रच्छ विनयोपेता भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरा
Therefore your husband, the king, is not truly your beloved; you, adorned with humility and devotion, bowed your neck and questioned him.
भगवन्केन दानेन स्नानेन नियमेन च
O Lord, by what gift, by what bath, or by what discipline—
इति तस्या वचः श्रुत्वा स मुनिः संशितव्रतः
Hearing her words, the sage, steadfast in his vows—
महाकालवने पुत्रि लिगं सौभाग्यदायकम् तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सौभाग्यं समवाप्स्यसि
Daughter, in the great Kāla forest there is a linga that bestows good fortune; by merely seeing it, you will attain prosperity.
इंद्राण्याराधितं लिंगं पुरा सौभाग्यकारणात् तस्माद्गच्छ ममादेशान्महाकालवनं शुभम्
That linga was once worshipped by Indrāṇī for the sake of good fortune; therefore, go at my command to the auspicious great Kāla forest.
सौभाग्यं भविता तत्र कांतेन सह दर्शनम्
There, good fortune will arise for you upon seeing it together with your beloved.
इत्युक्ता सा तदा तेन तापसेन वरानने
Thus addressed at that time by the ascetic, O beautiful-faced one—
ददर्श प्रणयोपेता लिंगं सौभाग्यदायकम्
She beheld, with affection, the linga that grants good fortune.
पप्रच्छ जमदग्निं तु क्व गता मे प्रिया विभो
He asked Jamadagni, 'O Lord, where has my beloved gone?'
मया त्यक्ता नृशंसेन अहं तस्यास्तु वल्लभः 5.2.61.
I, cruelly abandoned by her, wish to be her beloved.
न भक्षिता सा भूपाल सिंहव्याघ्रनिशाचरैः
O king, she has not been devoured by lions, tigers, or night-roaming creatures.
महाकालवनं राजन्गता सौभाग्यकाम्यया
O king, she has gone to the great Kāla forest, desiring good fortune.
भार्यायां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता
When the wife is protected, the subjects are also protected.
धर्महानिश्चानुदिनमभार्यस्य भवेन्नृप
Day by day, the absence of a wife brings about the decline of dharma for a king.
पत्न्यानुकूलया भाव्यं यथाशीलेऽपि भर्त्तरि
One should act favorably toward one's wife, even if the husband is of a different disposition.
