The agitation of resolve and distraction, the impulse to act for the sake of creation—
The Lord of the daughters of the mountain, dwelling atop the mountain peaks—
Thus was I praised by the demon, O beautiful one, impaled upon the trident.
And that boon of the trident, O Devi, was then joyfully granted by me.
Pleased, I bestow upon you the supreme, highest state.
Which is attained only by those who worship me, their faults utterly destroyed.
If the Blessed Lord is gracious, if you have compassion for me, then let any other sin arising from evil association—
Then, with a heart embraced by compassion, I instructed him.
There, the linga that grants attainment of me, that brings welfare to the worlds—
Hearing my words, he departed swiftly.
And by the linga, the trident was again beheld, beloved of Shankara.
Out of affection, he was embraced exceedingly, and again asked after his welfare.
Urged greatly by the Lord, for the sake of your purification, from this day forth in the world of men, you shall be renowned by my name.
Therefore, from your vision there shall be greater benefit—I grant you this boon.
All those who see you with devotion will obtain every reward.
Any person who worships you, even if only with devotion,
Seated in a splendid celestial chariot adorned with jewels, fulfilling every desire,
Those who always take your name when afflicted by fear will have no fear in the dreadful ocean of worldly existence.
But those men who see you without feeling, merely out of habit,
Having said this, he embraced the liṅga with the trident, carefully.
O Goddess, this power of yours has been described, which destroys sin.
Thus ends the fifty-first chapter, called 'The Description of the Greatness of Śūleśvara,' in the section on the eighty-four liṅgas, in the fifth Avantya book of the glorious Skanda Purāṇa, comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
He whose name is Omkāreśvara is known in the three worlds.
In the first age, called Prākṛta Kalpa, I was the first to do so.
Then that divine person appeared, asking, 'What should I do?'
His state was not perceived, like the path of a lamp at extinction.
As he was thinking thus, four arose from him.
Named Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāma, embodying Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva,
By my grace, I gave him the name Omkāra.
From the heart of that god arose the syllable vaṣaṭ.
