संज्ञानाम रवेर्भार्या सा सुता विश्वकर्मणः छायामयी चात्मनस्तु निर्मिता तरसा तया
She is called Saṃjñā, wife of the Sun; she is the daughter of Viśvakarman, and created from the essence of his own being by his power.
सा प्रोक्ता सादरेणैव स्थीयतां सूर्यसंनिधौ
She was respectfully instructed to remain in the presence of the Sun.
इत्युक्त्वा सा तदा संज्ञा जगाम भवनं पितुः जनयामास तनयं नामतो यः शनैश्चरः
Having spoken thus, she then regained consciousness and went to her father's house; she gave birth to a son, who was named Śanaiścara.
तस्मिञ्जाते भयं जग्मुः सदेवासुरमानुषाः
When he was born, fear arose among gods, demons, and humans alike.
इन्द्रोऽपि भयसंत्रस्तो ब्रह्माणं शरणं गतः
Even Indra, overwhelmed by fear, sought refuge with Brahmā.
भिन्नं तु रोहिणीचक्रं व्याप्तं नक्षत्रमंडलम्
The circle of Rohiṇī was broken, and the constellation sphere was pervaded.
वासवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः
Hearing the words of Vāsava, Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds,
मर्यादा क्रियतां भानो वार्यतां पुत्र औरसः
Let boundaries be set for Bhānu; restrain your own son.
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा रविणा प्रोक्तमीदृशः 5.2.50.
Hearing the words of Brahmā, Ravi spoke as follows:
पश्य मे चरणौ दग्धौ दृष्टिमात्रेण लीलया
Behold, my feet have been burned merely by his playful glance.
सूर्यस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा हरिः प्राप्तस्तु तत्क्षणात्
Hearing the words of Sūrya, Hari arrived there at that very moment.
गम्यतां तत्र यत्रास्ते देवदेवो महेश्वरः
Go there, where the god of gods, Maheśvara, resides.
वृत्तांतः कथितः सर्वो रविपुत्रस्य पार्वति
The entire account of Ravi's son was related to Pārvatī.
अधोदृष्टिर्मया दृष्टो वक्रांगो रूपतोऽसितः
I saw him with a downward gaze, his form crooked and dark in appearance.
किमर्थं वै स्मृतो देव देह्याजां मम शंकर
For what purpose, O god, have you remembered me? Grant me a birth, O Śaṃkara.
इत्युक्तोऽहं तदा तेन रविपुत्रेण पार्वति
Thus I was addressed at that time by the son of Ravi, O Pārvatī.
तेनोक्तं देहि मे स्थानं पानमाहारमेव च
He said: 'Give me a place, and also food and drink.'
मेषादिराशिसंस्थः संस्त्रिंशन्मासान्प्रपीडय
Dwelling in the signs beginning with Aries, afflict for thirty months.
अष्टमश्च चतुर्थश्च द्वितीयो जन्मसंस्थितः 5.2.50.
The eighth, fourth, and second are the places of birth.
एकादशो वा षष्ठो वा तृतीय स्थानगोथवा
The eleventh or sixth, or the third, are the places of residence.
पंचमो नवमश्चैव उदासीनस्तु सप्तमः
The fifth and the ninth, and the seventh is neutral.
पूजां प्राप्स्यसि चात्यर्थं ग्रहाणामधिकं सदा
You will receive worship exceedingly, always surpassing the other planets.
अतस्ते स्थावरं नाम भविष्यति महीतले
Therefore, your name will be 'Sthāvara' on the earth.
अतः शनैश्चरोनाम भविष्यसि सदा भुवि
Thus, you will always be known as 'Śanaiścara' upon the earth.
वर्णतो ह्यसितो नाम भविष्यसि महीतले तुष्टो ददासि राज्यं च रुष्टो वै हरसि क्षणात्
By color, you will be called 'Asita' on the earth; when pleased, you grant kingdoms, when angered, you take them away in an instant.
देवासुरमनुष्याश्च सिद्धविद्याधरोरगाः ।। त्वत्क्रूरदृष्टिनिहता नाशं यास्यंति नान्यथा
The gods, demons, humans, Siddhas, Vidyādharas, and serpents—struck by your fierce gaze—will surely meet destruction, there is no other way.
तव प्रसादात्प्राप्स्यंति मनोऽभीष्टं सुदुर्ल्लभम्
By your grace, they will attain their heart's desire, which is extremely difficult to obtain.
मनोभीष्टकरं पुण्यं देवदानवदुर्लभम्
That which fulfills the heart's wish and is virtuous, rare even for gods and demons.
तत्र गच्छ ममादेशत्त्वपृथुकेश्वरपश्चिमे 5.2.50.
Go there, by my command, to the western lord of Pṛthukeśvara.
कीर्त्तिरेषा त्वदीयापि त्रैलोक्ये भविता धुवम्
Your fame will certainly prevail throughout the three worlds.
