मा भैर्मे कौतुकं पश्य भक्षोयं मम सांप्रतम्
Do not be afraid; watch the spectacle—he is about to be devoured by me.
इत्युक्त्वा मुष्टिघातेन तेनोच्चैर्दंडसूनुना
Having spoken thus, the son of Daṇḍa struck him forcefully with his fist.
स चक्रिणा कृतत्राणः पीडां नाल्पीयसीमपि
Protected by the wielder of the discus, he did not feel even the slightest pain.
अथ कोपवता राज्ञा हतो वक्त्रे चपेटया उवाच च वचो धैर्यमवष्टभ्य महाबली
Then, struck on the face by the angry king, the mighty one steadied himself and spoke these words with courage:
ततस्त्वं छिद्रमासाद्य हंतुं मां दानवांतक
So, finding a weakness, you seek to kill me, O destroyer of Dānavas.
एवंविधो हि मधुभिद्यदि त्वं बलवानसि
If you are truly strong, O slayer of Madhu, then act accordingly.
त्वया कपटरूपेण बलिना कैटभादयः 5.2.46.
By you, in a deceptive form, the mighty Kaiṭabha and others were slain.
पश्यतोऽस्य महाबाहोः स च प्राणाञ्जहौ क्षणात् 5.2.46.
As the great-armed one watched, he took his life in an instant.
सापि विद्याधर्यवंतीं समृद्धां वीक्ष्य दूरतः 5.2.46.
She, seeing from afar the prosperous Vidyādhara maiden,
तस्योपरि शुभं पद्मं रविरश्मिप्रकाशितम् विधिं संपूजयेद्भक्त्या रक्तमाल्यांबरादिभिः ।। 5.2.46.
Above her, a beautiful lotus shone with the rays of the sun; one should worship the Creator there with devotion, using red garlands, garments, and the like.
जातमात्रो व्रजेत्स्वर्गं पुनरायाति चात्र वै विनैव स्तन्यपानेन षोडशाब्दाकृतिः क्षणात ।। 5.2.46.
A newborn immediately goes to heaven and returns here again, assuming in a moment the form of a sixteen-year-old, without even drinking mother's milk.
निन्युर्गगनमार्गेण ब्राह्म्याद्या यत्र मातरः 5.2.46.
The Mothers, beginning with Brāhmī, carried him away through the path of the sky.
आविर्बभूव पुरतो लिंगरूपेण शंकरः 5.2.46.
Śaṃkara appeared before them in the form of a liṅga.
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः 5.2.46.
O goddess, thus I have told you this glory, destroyer of sin.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण प्राप्यंते सर्वसिद्धयः
By merely seeing him, all attainments are obtained.
पुरा राथन्तरे कल्पे नूपुरोनाम वै गणः
In the ancient Rāthantara cycle, there was indeed a group called Nūpura.
स एकदा कुबेरस्य सभायां प्राप्य संस्थितः
Once, that group stood in the assembly of Kubera.
ननृतुश्चापरास्तत्र ह्युर्वशी योषितां वरा
There, the foremost among women, Urvaśī, danced with others.
तासां नृत्यं तदा वीक्ष्य नूपुरो गणपस्तदा
At that time, observing their dance, Nūpura, the leader of the group,
नृत्यमानस्ततो हृष्टः पुष्पगु च्छेन वक्षसि
became delighted while dancing, and struck her chest with a garland of flowers.
उर्वशी तु ततः क्रुद्धा पुष्पगुच्छेन ताडिता
Then Urvaśī, angered by being struck with the garland of flowers,
उवाच धनदस्तत्र क्रोधेनाकुलमानसः
spoke there to Dhanada, her mind agitated with wrath.
यस्मात्त्वया रंगभंगः कृतः कामार्द्दितेन वै
Because you disrupted the stage, overcome by desire,
कुबेरस्य च शापात्तु जगाम धरणीतलम् 5.2.47.
by Kubera's curse, he went to the earth.
विलप्य सुभृशं सोऽथ शरणं परमेश्वरीम्
Then, lamenting intensely, he sought refuge in the Supreme Lady.
त्वं तुष्टा तु तदा जाता प्रत्यक्षा परमेश्वरी
You became pleased at that time, appearing directly as the Supreme Lady.
गच्छ पुत्र ममादेशान्महाकालवनं शुभम्
Go, my son, by my command, to the auspicious Mahākāla forest.
तस्या दक्षिणतो वत्स विद्यते लिंगमुत्तमम्
On its southern side, dear one, there exists the supreme liṅga.
सा प्राची स च देवेशस्त्वन्नाम्ना ख्यातिमेष्यति
That eastern liṅga, O Lord of gods, will become renowned by your name.
त्वया च प्रेरितो देवि कीर्त्यर्थं तत्र गम्यताम्
And, prompted by you, O Lady, let it be visited there for the sake of fame.
