तद्गच्छ कार्यसिद्ध्यै त्वं हत्वा तं दुष्टदानवम्
Therefore, go for the accomplishment of your task, slaying that wicked Dānava.
सा तु विद्याधरी बाला विलोक्य त्वां नरेश्वर पार्वतीवचनाद्दुष्टं घातयिष्यस्यसंशयम्
But that young Vidyādhara maiden, seeing you, O lord of men, by Pārvatī’s command, will surely kill the wicked one—there is no doubt.
इति नारदवाक्यं स निशम्यामित्रजिन्नृपः उपायं चापि पप्रच्छ गंतुं वै चंपकावतीम्
Hearing these words of Nārada, the king, destroyer of foes, then asked for a means to reach Campakāvatī.
नारदेन पुनः प्रोक्तः स राजा गिरिराजजे
Again, Nārada spoke to that king, the son of the mountain’s daughter.
भवान्द्रक्ष्यति पोतस्थकल्पवृक्षरथास्थिताम् वीणामादाय गायंतीं गाथामत्यंतसुस्वरम्
You will see her, standing on a boat, upon a chariot made of wish-fulfilling trees, holding a vīṇā and singing a song with exceedingly sweet voice.
यत्कर्म विहितं येन शुभं वाप्यथवाऽशुभम्
Whatever deed is performed by whom, whether auspicious or inauspicious—
गाथामिमां तु संगीय सरथा समहीरुहा 5.2.46.
This very song she sings, along with the chariot and the trees.
भवानप्यविशंकं च ततः पोतान्महार्णवे
You too, without hesitation, then board the boat upon the great ocean.
ततो द्रक्ष्यसि पाताले नगरीं चंपकावतीम्
Then you will see in the netherworld the city of Campakāvatī.
इत्युक्त्वांतर्हितो देवि स चतुर्मु खनंदनः
Having said this, the goddess disappeared, and so did the four-faced one.
विवेशांतः समुद्रं च नगरीमाससाद ताम्
He entered the depths of the ocean and reached that city.
तेन राज्ञा त्रिजगतीसौंदर्यश्रीरिवैकिका
By that king, a unique splendor of beauty, as if of the three worlds, was created.
निरमायि प्रमोद्देशात्स्रष्टृसृष्टिर्वि लक्षणा
From delight, a creation distinct from the creator’s own was fashioned.
योषिद्रूपं समाश्रित्य तिष्ठत्यत्राकुतोभया
Assuming the form of a woman, she dwells there, free from all fear.
सा विलोक्याथ तं बालं नितरां मधुराकृतिम्
Then, seeing that boy, exceedingly sweet in form—
शंखचक्रांकसुभगभुजद्वयविराजि तम्
Adorned with lovely arms marked by the conch and discus—
भवानीभक्तिबीजोत्थभूरुहं पुरुषाकृतिम् 5.2.46.
A human form, like a tree sprung from the seed of devotion to Bhavānī.
इति पर्याकुलीकृत्य चक्षुषी च मुहुर्मुहुः
Thus, repeatedly agitating her eyes again and again—
तावद्गुप्तं समातिष्ठ शस्त्रागारेऽत्र गह्वरे
Remain hidden here in the armory, in this cavern, for now.
आगामिन्यां तृतीयायां परश्वः पाणिपीडनम्
On the third day to come, the trial of strength by hand will take place.
मा तद्भीतिं कुरु युवंस्त्वत्कार्यं भविताचिरात्
Do not be afraid of that; your purpose will soon be fulfilled.
स्थिरो वीरो महाबाहुर्दानवागमनेक्षणः
A steadfast, heroic, strong-armed man, watchful for the coming of the demon.
अथ सायं समायातो दानवो भीषणाकृतिः
Then, in the evening, the demon of terrifying appearance arrived.
आगत्य दानवो रौद्रः प्रलयांबुदनिस्वनः
The fierce demon came, roaring like a storm cloud at the end of the world.
गृहाणेमानि रत्नानि दिव्यानि वरवर्णिनि
Take these jewels, O woman of excellent complexion, these divine gems.
दासीनामयुतं प्रातर्दास्यामि तव सुंदरि
I will give you ten thousand maidservants in the morning, O beautiful one.
गन्धर्वीणां किंनरीणां सततं परिचारिकाः 5.2.46.
There will always be attendants for you from among the Gandharvīs and Kinnarīs.
राक्षसीनां शतान्यष्टौ शतमप्सरसां वरम्
Eight hundred Rakshasī women and a hundred of the best Apsaras will be yours.
यावत्संपत्तिसंभारो दिक्पालानां गृहेषु वै
As much wealth and treasure as is gathered in the houses of the guardians of the directions.
दिव्यान्भोगान्मया सार्द्धं भोक्ष्यसे मत्परिग्र हात्
You will enjoy divine pleasures together with me, as my consort.
