यशोधनो वदान्यश्च सुधीर्ब्राह्मणदैवतः
He was renowned, generous, wise, and a protector of Brahmins and gods.
विनीतो नीतिसंपन्नः कुशलः सर्वकर्मसु
He was humble, endowed with good conduct, and skilled in all tasks.
कृतज्ञो मधुरालापः पापकर्मपराङ्मुखः
He was grateful, spoke sweetly, and turned away from sinful deeds.
रणांगणे कृतांतस्य संख्यावांश्च सदोजिरे
On the battlefield, he counted the slain and was steadfast in the assembly.
धर्मार्थ धनकोशश्च समृद्धबलवाहनः
He possessed righteousness, wealth, a treasury, and abundant forces.
स्थैर्यधैर्यसमापन्नो देशकालविचक्षणः
He was endowed with firmness and courage, discerning place and time.
वासुदेवांघ्रियुगले चेतोवृत्तिं निधाय च 5.2.46.
He fixed his mind upon the pair of feet of Vāsudeva.
अलंघ्यशासनः श्रीमान्विष्णुभक्तिपरायणः
His commands could not be transgressed; he was prosperous and devoted to Vishnu.
हरेराराधनान्युच्चैः प्रतिसौधं पदेपदे
He performed the worship of Hari loudly, at every gate and every step.
गोवृन्दगोपगोपालगोपीजनमनोहर
He delighted the cows, cowherds, gopālas, and the gopīs.
केशिहन्कैटभाराते कंसारे कमलापते
He is the slayer of Keśi and Kaitabha, the enemy of Kaṃsa, the lord of lotuses.
कृष्ण केशव कंजाक्ष कीनाशभयनाशन
O Krishna, Keśava, lotus-eyed, destroyer of the fear of death.
पीतकौशेयवसन पद्मनाभ परात्पर
Clad in yellow silk, O Padmanābha, supreme among the supreme.
जन्मिनां जन्महरण जंजपूकौघनाशन
Destroyer of birth among the born, remover of the multitude of evil acts.
श्रीरंग शार्ङ्गकोदंड शौरे शीतांशुलोचन
O Ranga, wielder of Sharnga and Kodanda, O Shouri, whose eyes are like the cool moon,
देवकीहृदयानंद दंदशूकेश्वरेशय
O delight of Devaki’s heart, Lord of Danda and Shuka,
विष्वक्सेन विभो वीर वनमालिन्बलिप्रिय 5.2.46.
O Vishvaksena, all-pervading one, hero, garlanded with forest flowers, beloved of Bali,
इत्यादीनि पवित्राणि नामानि प्रति मंदिरे
Such pure names as these are heard in every temple,
श्रूयंते यत्र कुत्रापि रम्याणि मधुविद्विषः
Wherever the charming names of the enemy of Madhu are heard,
विचित्राणि चरित्राणि गीयंते च गृहेगृहे
His wondrous deeds are sung in every household,
ऋते हरिकथायास्तु नान्या वार्त्ता निशम्यते
Except for stories of Hari, no other talk is heard,
तस्य राज्ञो भयाद्व्याधैररण्ये सुखचारिणः
Out of fear of that king, even those animals who roam happily in the forest,
हन्यंते क्वापि तद्भीत्या मत्स्यमांसाशिनाऽपि व
Are not killed anywhere out of fear of him, not even by those who eat fish and meat,
स्तनपानं न कुर्वंति संप्राप्य हरिवासरम् उपोषणपरा जाता अन्येषां का कथा नृणाम्
Even infants do not suckle upon the arrival of Hari’s day, being intent on fasting; what then of other people?
महामहोत्सवः सर्वैः पुरौकोभिर्वितन्यते
A great festival is celebrated by all the citizens,
यो विष्णुभक्तिरहितः प्राणैरपि धनैरपि
He who is without devotion to Vishnu, even with life and wealth,
अन्त्यजा अपि तद्राष्ट्रे शंखचक्रांकधारिणः 5.2.46.
Even those of lowest birth in that kingdom bear the marks of the conch and discus,
शुभानि यानि कर्माणि क्रियंतेऽनुदिनं जनैः
Whatever auspicious acts are performed daily by people,
विना मुकुंदगोविंद परमानंदमच्युतम् कृष्ण एव परो बंधुस्तस्यासीदवनीपतेः
Without Mukunda, Govinda, the supremely blissful Acyuta—Krishna alone was the true friend of that king,
एवं तस्मिन्महीपाले राज्ये सम्यक्प्रशासति
Thus, while that king ruled the realm justly,
