May I have devotion, in future births as well, to you and to those devoted to you.
Whoever recites this hymn of your glorious deeds before me—
When the Lord of the gods had spoken thus, those maidens became filled with joy.
The Nāga maidens said: In a previous birth, how was service rendered to you by the four of us?
Then the account of her previous deeds, too, was told of that virtuous one.
Hearing thus the desired words spoken affectionately by the young girls—
I shall recount the former existence of you all, and of her as well.
This Ratnāvalī was formerly a bird named Pārāvatī.
In my palace, she dwelt happily for a long time with these two.
Above and below, they performed many circumambulations.
Having bathed at the sacred ford of the four rivers, and having drunk that water repeatedly,
By these two, whose minds were steadfast, you indeed became exceedingly joyful.
By these two, my auspicious lamps were seen many times; because of the influence of birth among lower beings, there is no death in my presence.
Because, at the time of death on the Jambu path, it certainly brings attainment of heaven.
Her husband, Parāvata, was born from the Vidyādhara lineage; in this birth she was a maiden, and I speak also of her previous birth.
She is Kalāvatī, daughter of Triśikha, the lord of serpents.
In another existence, she was the third maiden of Ārāyaṇa.
By her father, Ārāyaṇa, prompted by those two,
While still not come of age, in the forest, for the purpose of gathering sacrificial wood,
They, named Bhavānī and Gautamī, were daughters of Ārāyaṇa.
Therefore, with effort, a suitor should be avoided.
Then, by fate, at the hermitage of a certain sage, resembling the gods,
Having performed various vows such as fasts, O son of a brāhmaṇa,
As a result of the karma of stealing fruit, O monkey, you became born of those two.
And that Nārāyaṇa, the brāhmaṇa, was devoted to serving his parents.
Thus, in another existence also, he was the husband of those two.
Beside the palace, there was also a great banyan tree.
At the sacred ford where Viṣṇu's body became water, they both plunged in play.
Out of their innate nature and restlessness, they playfully circle around.
They wander freely in all directions near the banyan tree.
