स्वदेहादनपायिन्यौ छायाकांती यथा तथा
They never left her side, just as shadow and radiance do not depart from the body.
सा तु बाल्ये व्यतिक्रांते किंचिदुद्भिन्नयौवना
When her childhood had passed, and she had entered the first bloom of youth,
पितस्त्रिलोचनं काश्यामर्चयित्वा दिनेदिने
Her father, the three-eyed one, worshipped Kāśī day by day.
एवं नागकुमारी सा सखीद्वयसमन्विता
Thus, that serpent maiden, accompanied by her two friends,
मां प्रत्यग्रैः सुकुसुमैः सुशुभैरि ष्टगंधिभिः
Honored me with fresh, beautiful, and fragrant flowers.
तिस्रोऽपि गीतं गायंति ललितं चैव सुस्वरम्
All three sang songs, graceful and melodious.
वीणावेणुमृदंगांश्च लयतालविचक्षणाः
Skilled in rhythm and tempo, they played the vīṇā, flute, and mṛdaṅga.
इत्थमाराधयंतीशं तिस्रो नागकुमारिकाः
In this way, the three serpent maidens worshipped the Lord.
प्रातश्चतुर्थ्यां ताः स्नात्वा तीर्थे पिलिपिले शुभे
On the morning of the fourth day, they bathed at the auspicious tīrtha of Pilipila.
सुप्तासु तासु स शिवस्त्रिनेत्रः शशिभूषणः 5.2.45.
While they slept, Śiva, the three-eyed one adorned with the moon, appeared.
लिंगादेव हि निर्गत्य गंगापन्नगमेखलः
Emerging from the liṅga, girdled with serpents and Ganga,
उत्थाय ता विनिर्मथ्य लोचने श्रुतिसंगमे
He arose, gently rubbed their eyes at the confluence of the ears.
यावत्पश्यंति पुरतः संभ्रमापन्नमानसाः
As long as they gazed ahead, their minds were seized by agitation.
ववंदिरेऽथ ता बाला ज्ञात्वा लक्ष्मभिरीश्वरम्
Then those young girls, recognizing the Lord by his auspicious marks, offered their reverence.
जय शंभो जयेशान जय सर्वग सर्वद
Victory to Śambhu! Victory to the Lord of Lords! Victory to the All-pervading, the Ever-present!
जय जालंधरहर जय कंदर्पदर्पहृत् जय भक्तजनाधीश जय प्रमथ नायक
Victory to the slayer of Jālandhara! Victory to the subduer of Kāmadeva’s pride! Victory to the Lord of devotees! Victory to the leader of the Pramathas!
नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्तुभ्यं नमोनमः
Salutations to you, salutations to you, salutations to you, again and again!
इत्युक्त्वा दंडवद्भूमौ प्रणिपेतुः कुमारिकाः
Having spoken thus, the maidens prostrated themselves flat on the ground.
सुतो मंदारदाम्नश्च नाम्ना परिमलालयः
The son of Mandāradāmnā was named Parimalālaya.
चिरं विद्याधरे लोके भोगान्भुक्त्वा समंततः 5.2.45.
For a long time, he enjoyed pleasures in the world of the Vidyādharas, in every direction.
जन्मांतरेपि मे भक्तिर्भवतीभिश्च तेन च
May I have devotion, in future births as well, to you and to those devoted to you.
एतत्प्रभावतीस्तोत्रं ये पठिष्यंति मे पुरः
Whoever recites this hymn of your glorious deeds before me—
इत्युक्तवति देवेशे ताः कन्या हृष्टमानसाः
When the Lord of the gods had spoken thus, those maidens became filled with joy.
नागकन्या ऊचुः जन्मांतरे कथं सेवा चतुर्भिर्भवतः कृता
The Nāga maidens said: In a previous birth, how was service rendered to you by the four of us?
ततः प्राक्तनवृत्तांत मेतस्यापि कृतात्मनः
Then the account of her previous deeds, too, was told of that virtuous one.
इति श्रुत्वा प्रणयतो बालोदीरितमीप्सितम्
Hearing thus the desired words spoken affectionately by the young girls—
प्राग्भवं भवतीनां च तस्यापि कथयाम्यहम्
I shall recount the former existence of you all, and of her as well.
एषा रत्नावली पूर्वमासीत्पारावती खगी
This Ratnāvalī was formerly a bird named Pārāvatī.
प्रासादे च ममैताभ्यामुषितं सुचिरं सुखम्
In my palace, she dwelt happily for a long time with these two.
उपरिष्टादधस्ताच्च कृता भूरिप्रदक्षिणाः 5.2.45.
Above and below, they performed many circumambulations.
