That well-being, along with good destiny and fame, is also desired.
That fame is attained by men who follow the path of policy; if you do not go by morning, then you will remember me.
Though thus addressed by his wise wife, the female dove,
Then, at dawn, the powerful hawk arrived.
The mighty hawk stayed there for a few days.
Either fight, foolish one, or go out at my word; for fate alone brings help, not what you say.
Thus, addressed by the hawk, the bird was together with his wife.
Then, hungry and thirsty, he was seized by the powerful hawk.
The hawk swiftly took them both up into the sky.
Then, there, the wise wife uttered a plaintive cry.
Now that I have reached this state, what can I do, being powerless?
Then I shall tell you what is beneficial; I will do that without hesitation.
As long as I am in his mouth and he is still in the sky, not yet on the ground—
Hearing his wife's words, the bird acted accordingly.
Then, by that cry, she was released from the cavity of his mouth.
Even in adversity, the wise should never abandon effort anywhere.
Where, indeed, is such a wondrous deliverance for both, so far-fetched?
Therefore, effort always bears fruit according to one's fortune.
Then, by the conjunction of time, those two died on the Jambu path.
When their merit remained, a virtuous son of a Gandharva was born.
He became a repository of many kinds of knowledge and a vessel of skill in arts.
He also undertook discipline, his mind having conquered the senses.
Attachment to another's wife destroys life, fame, strength, and happiness.
He also adopted another discipline, being pure in spirit.
He is the abode of all merit, the revealer of all purposes.
As long as the body is free from illness, as long as the senses are undisturbed,
Thus, Mandāradāmi, whose fragrance pervades Kāśī,
Was also born in Pārāvatī, in the mansion of Ratnadīpa.
Among all the serpent maidens, in beauty, character, arts, and virtues,
She had two companions; one was named Prabhāvatī.
