इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा क्षेमार्थं कृपया मया
Hearing their words, out of compassion I acted for their welfare.
आदेशो दीयतां देव किं करोमीत्युवाच सः
He said, 'O god, give your command—what shall I do?'
ममांगाद्रजसा जातस्तेनांगारक उच्यसे
Born from the dust of my body, you are therefore called Aṅgāraka.
इदानीं वक्रतां यातो वक्रस्त्वं गीयसे बुधैः आहारेण विना देव कथं तृप्तिर्भविष्यति
Now you have become crooked in course, and are called Vakra by the wise; O god, how will you be satisfied without food?
तस्मान्मे देहि सुस्थानमाधिपत्यं च देहि मे
Therefore, grant me a good abode and give me lordship.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पुत्रोऽयं मम वल्लभः
Hearing his words, I thought, 'This is my beloved son.'
इति संचिन्त्य मनसा स्मृतं स्थानं मयोत्तमम्
Thinking thus in my mind, I remembered the most excellent place.
दत्तं पुत्र मया स्थानं महाकालवनोत्तमे
I gave you, my son, a place in the most excellent Mahākāla forest.
खगर्ता चैव शिप्रा च संगमस्तत्र विद्यते
There, the Khagartā and the Śiprā rivers meet.
यदा मया धृता गंगा तदा सा चन्द्रमण्डलात् 5.2.43.
When I held the Gaṅgā, then she came from the lunar orb.
खगर्तेति च विख्याता खाद्भ्रष्टा प्रापतत्क्षितौ
She is known as Khagartā, for having fallen from the sky, she reached the earth.
लिंगमूर्तिरहं पुत्र तिष्ठामि सुरपूजितः
I, in the form of a liṅga, remain there, worshipped by the gods, my son.
पूजितोऽहं त्वया तत्र संगमे लोकपूजिते
There, at that sacred confluence revered by the world, you have worshipped me.
मध्ये ग्रहाणां सर्वेषामाधिपत्यं मया तव
Among all the planets, I have granted you lordship.
पूजां प्राप्स्यसि तत्रैव ग्रहमध्ये व्यवस्थितः
There itself, situated among the planets, you shall receive worship.
त्वामुद्दिश्य करिष्यंति पूजां शांतिं सदक्षिणाम्
People will perform worship for you, with offerings and rites for peace, always accompanied by gifts.
वारश्चैकश्च ते दत्तो मंगलार्थं मया तव तैलाभ्यंगं करिष्यंति न च प्राप्स्यंति ते बलम्
I have granted you one day of the week for auspiciousness; they will anoint you with oil, but they will not obtain your strength.
इत्युक्तस्तु मया देवि वक्रांगो मंगलः सुतः
Thus, O goddess, I spoke to Mangala, the son with a crooked limb.
सन्तुष्टस्तेन वाक्येन मदीयेन वरानने
He was satisfied by these words of mine, O beautiful-faced one.
शिप्रायाश्च तटे रम्ये खगर्त्तासंगमांतिकम् ।। 5.2.43.
On the lovely bank of the Shipra, near the confluence with the Khagarta.
मया चालिंगितः प्रेम्णा चुम्बितः शिरसि प्रिये
With affection, I embraced him and kissed him on the head, dear one.
दृष्टोऽहं च त्वया पुत्र भक्त्या चाराधितस्त्वया
I have been seen by you, my son, and you have worshipped me with devotion.
अंगारेश्वरनामाहमद्यप्रभृति पुत्रक
From today onward, my son, I am known as Aṅgāreśvara.
ये मां पश्यंति सततं संगमेऽत्र व्यवस्थितम्
Those who always see me established here at the confluence—
ये मां संपूज यिष्यंति ह्यंगारकदिने नराः
Those men who worship me on the day of Aṅgāraka—
चतुर्थ्यां मंगलदिने ये मां पश्यंति सुव्रताः
Those of good vows who see me on the fourth lunar day, on the day of Maṅgala—
अमावास्या च भौमश्च संयोगो दृश्यते यदा
Whenever the new moon and Tuesday coincide—
स्नात्वा तदा प्रपश्यंति मामत्रैव व्यवस्थितम्
Whoever bathes then and beholds me established here—
वाराणस्यां प्रयागे च कुरुक्षेत्रे च यत्फलम्
The merit obtained in Varanasi, Prayaga, and Kurukshetra—
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः 5.2.43.
This, O goddess, is the power I have described to you, which destroys sin.
