O noble one, listen to the sacred account of this revered place, where Vāsudeva himself stands as guardian, ensuring its safety and sanctity. Through heartfelt devotion to Bhairava, the wishes of devotees are ever fulfilled, and their cherished desires come to fruition. This holy site was consecrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Mārgaśīrṣa, marking an auspicious beginning. Here, the prescribed worship includes offerings—animals and other gifts—presented with sincerity by the faithful. By Bhairava’s grace, those who dwell in this sacred region find their lives free from obstacles and filled with blessings. In the northern part of this land lies the delightful Bharata-kunda, a reservoir of immense spiritual merit. Bathing in its pure waters and giving gifts there bestows inexhaustible virtue. The deities are to be worshipped with devotion, adorned with fine garments and ornaments, their presence honored with care and reverence. Those who meditate upon Rama Chandra in their hearts, with purity of mind and mastery over their senses, find their inner world transformed. It was the great king Bharata who constructed this mighty reservoir, endowing it with countless virtues. Its waters are alive with swans, cranes, chakravaka ducks, and other splendid birds, adding to the beauty and sanctity of the place. Bathing in Bharata-kunda grants great merit, pure joy, and deep delight; the ancestors are satisfied, and all the deities are pleased. It is proper to offer gold and food to a twice-born person there, as part of the sacred rites. To the west lies the excellent Jatakunda, celebrated as the foremost among all sacred reservoirs. In these ancient waters, King Bharata, blessed with fortune, is to be worshipped. On the fourteenth day of the dark half of Chaitra, an annual pilgrimage is observed with devotion. According to the highest ordinances, one should worship Rama and Sita, and then Lakshmana, at Bharata-kunda, following the proper sequence. O Brahmin, worship of Ajita is also enjoined here, for such devotion assures success in all undertakings. A grand festival should be celebrated, filled with singing and instrumental music, uplifting the hearts of all who gather. To the north, O wise one, is found an auspicious sign of the hero. After bathing in the lake, one should reside there for a time, absorbing the spiritual atmosphere. The heroic protector of Ayodhya grants the fulfillment of all desires to those who seek him. By offering fragrances, flowers, incense, and food according to the proper rites, whatever one wishes for here is surely attained. To the south dwells the Rakshasi named Surasa. Those who worship her with devotion attain all their desires. She was brought here from Lanka by Rama, the performer of great deeds. After worshipping her with proper rites, one should behold her with respect, making great effort, and celebrating with singing and musical instruments. On the third day of Navaratri, her annual procession is held, enchanting all with music, song, and dance festivals. When these rites are performed, there is no doubt that one will always be protected. In the western direction, O great sage, lies another most excellent place, to be worshipped diligently with fragrances, flowers, rice grains, and other offerings. By the power of such worship, success comes to those who seek it. After bathing in the sacred waters of the Sarayu, one should worship Pindaraka. His procession, adorned with flowers, is to be celebrated during the Navaratri festival. By beholding him, no obstacle remains for the devotee. From that place in the northeast, the birth of Rama is joyously celebrated. To the east of Vighneshvara and to the north of Vasishtha, these sacred sites are found. By beholding them, one gains victory over the bonds of birth. When the ninth day arrives, those who observe the vow with devotion, and those who give a thousand tawny cows each day, accrue immense merit. The fruits gained by men and ascetics dwelling in hermitages here are beyond measure, sanctifying their lives and leading to the highest good.
