In the midst of fierce battles, where chariots thunder and elephants charge, where spears, javelins, arrows, whirling wheels, and terrifying swords clash, your presence shines resplendent. Even in the wildest forests, in fortified strongholds, or among the dangers of bears, lions, and thorny, lurking thieves, you remain the unfailing source of brilliance—a refuge for all who suffer. Throughout the world, none can match your boundless compassion. Whoever is struck by leprosy, beset by enemies, plagued by disease, or crippled—whether lame, blind, dull-witted, withered in limb, or defeated in action—finds solace in you. Righteousness, when served, endures beyond this world, and in time, the wise become givers of boons. Your beauty is enchanting: eyes like those of a restless, beloved deer, lovely hair, jeweled earrings, and shining girdles. O Lord of the worlds, even a single act of worship or a fleeting remembrance of you, especially at the hour of death, brings immense merit. Yet, those whose minds are clouded by false reasoning, who do not bow to you in devotion, whose bodies do not thrill with piety, miss this grace. Your eyes, restless as the ocean’s waves and shining with the rays of jeweled serpent hoods, are wondrous to behold. As you move, O best of gods, the lotuses in the rivers of the gods, stirred by the wind, seem to follow you in adoration. Devotees, meditating on your true nature, stand again and again upon the ocean’s edge, their feet arrayed in rows, contemplating your glory. When you are stationed on the slope of the eastern mountain, veiled at sunrise and sunset, your chariot tears through the dense darkness of night with its radiant beams. With your lotus-like eyes half-closed, surrounded by the songs of chakravaka and swan birds, you bring beauty to the world. The blue, charming lotus, crowded by eager bees, and the spotless necklace of the shining moon, restless upon your lap, both find their place in your presence, O bird-borne one. As long as the green earth is shrouded in darkness, it remains impure, awaiting the honor of your rays to cleanse it. You are Vishnu, you are the Moon, the destroyer of demons, Shanmukha, the lord of wealth, Time itself, the creator, the refuge of the mountains and Malaya, and the fire that purifies all. You are beyond reproach, protector of cows, destroyer of Tripura, burner of Kama, vanquisher of the prideful demons—protect me! O Aditya, Bhaskara, Divakara, Saptasapti, Martanda, Surya, lord of the green horses, Bhanu—by all these names you are praised. You are the radiant ear-ornament of the bride of the eastern direction, the beloved lord of the Mandakini, the lamp that illumines the world. You alone are Brahman, truth, auspiciousness, lord of the worlds and the sky, praised by sages, the very embodiment of the universe. With hands joined upon my head like a budding lotus, I have offered you my praise today, O god, with deep devotion. Salutations to Savitr, the sole eye of the world, the cause of creation, preservation, and destruction. Then, the Sun spoke: “I will grant you a boon—whatever is in your heart. For the sight of me is never fruitless.” Arjuna replied, “This alone is the highest boon for me: that those who always praise you with devotion, bowing down, may have their heart’s desires fulfilled.” The Sun, pleased, granted this boon, declaring, “Whatever is wished for by those who praise me with this hymn composed by you, let it be granted.” Sanatkumara continued: At that moment, Narayana, having placed the conch, blew it with care. The illuminator of the day, the lord of the gods, the blazing one, the best among those who burn, the supreme bestower of boons—Vishnu, sinless, the younger brother of Indra—stood resplendent. Adorned with rays, embodying the universe, the Sun of fierce brilliance, he was the god of gods, lord of deep waters, the supreme treasure of radiance. He is the awakener of the world, its source and lord, powerful, pure, radiant, master of the wind-borne. He is the house and the maker of houses, the swan, the one with green horses, the eater of offerings. Honored by all existence, he is the essence of past, future, and present, the ornament of the three worlds, the sacred ford, the Sun who faces all directions.
