By merely beholding those two divine beings, all sins are washed away from the soul. After vanquishing every demon in battle, the victorious one returned to his own celestial abode. Then, led by Brihaspati and filled with eagerness to see Hari, all the gods quickly gathered and made their way to Ayodhya. Upon arriving, they listened to tales of Hari’s countless virtues and the reverence he inspired. Their minds became absorbed in contemplation of Hari, and they established themselves in deep meditation. Seeing the assembled gods, who bowed with devotion at his feet, Hari spoke with compassion, saying, “O gods, I will fulfill whichever wish you desire.” The gods replied, “O Lord, God of gods, you have accomplished everything for us. Yet, O mighty one, you must always be present, forever. In this way, the destruction of the enemy’s faction must always be carried out.” Hari assured them, “O gods, I will always bring about the increase of splendor for the illustrious.” This god, known as Guptahari, is celebrated throughout all the worlds. Here, whoever among living beings excels in worship, sacrifice, recitation, and similar practices—whoever gives charity according to their means, having mastered their senses—whoever worships the gods for my satisfaction, desiring righteousness, all find favor. A cow with golden horns, silver hooves, draped in two garments, with a jeweled tail, yielding milk and adorned with bells, should be given to a twice-born who knows the Vedas, who is virtuous and pure in soul. Indeed, a cow should be given to a brāhmaṇa; by this act, happiness is enjoyed everywhere. For my satisfaction, it must be given here with a pure heart. Those who, purified by bathing, come here with devotion to me, and likewise at the seat of Hari with the discus, should offer the highest gifts for my satisfaction. You also, O best of the good, should undertake the pilgrimage here according to the sacred injunctions. On the eastern side, from the cow’s ford, extending for three yojanas, after bathing as prescribed, one should carefully behold this holy place. Even the gods, having performed the pilgrimage here with great care, established its renown upon the earth. At the sacred confluence, after bathing, the Lord—Guptahari—should be worshipped; he grants all desired fruits. Likewise, the pilgrimage to Hari with the discus should be undertaken with utmost care. Whoever performs this pilgrimage rejoices in the world of Viṣṇu. At this point, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana Vyāsa spoke again, filled with wonder. He said, “By what you have spoken, this marvel has arisen in my mind. Tell me in detail about this most marvelous greatness.” The reply came: “Listen, O best of Brahmins, to the most wondrous greatness of the confluence. Ten billion thousand and ten billion hundred beings always dwell there, O Brahmin, as I have learned from Skanda—gods, immortals, perfected ones, and yogis. A man who bathes in the waters of the confluence with a focused mind, and who performs a sacrifice with a Vaiṣṇava mantra in purity, obtains fruits equal to a thousand horse sacrifices and a hundred Vājapeya rites. The merit gained by giving gold daily is also obtained there. Especially on the new moon, the full moon, and on both twelfth days, the blessings of this sacred place are multiplied.
