When the goddess was approached, a question arose: “Of what use is Indra, who possesses little strength, or any of the others, O lovely-faced one?” These words were spoken to her, O king, just as you have heard. Upon hearing this, the radiant goddess smiled gently and began to ponder deeply. “How should I restrain him for the sake of the gods?” she wondered. At that very moment, the lord of the Dānavas, overwhelmed by desire, arrived there swiftly. With a single glance, the goddess beheld the lord of the Dānavas. Then, she laughed softly, O best of men. Around them, elephants, noble horses, and many kinds of infantry filled the scene. By these forces, the entire army of the lord of the Daityas was struck down with weapons. When that powerful army was destroyed, Indra and the other gods said to the goddess, “Without him alive, O goddess, there will be no kingdom for us in heaven.” In response, she herself gave the great peak of the mountain and sat upon it. There, the Mother of the Universe, glorious and wish-fulfilling, took her seat and dwells to this day, granting desires directly to people. At that very moment, all the gods, including Indra, were present. The goddess, pleased with them, addressed them kindly: “Go to your own places, all of you, free from sorrow.” Then she said, “Choose a boon, O Indra; speak what is in your heart.” Indra replied, “If you are pleased with me, O goddess, ever devoted to your worshippers—may I rule the kingdom, O goddess of the gods, ever devoted to your worshippers, the kingdom created formerly by Hari, by whom it stands unmoving. Here, we shall worship you, all of us assembled together.” Filled with joy by the goddess’s power, Indra returned to heaven. The goddess remained there, wishing for the welfare of the gods. Whoever beholds her on the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra, O king—what use are vows, restraints, or gifts given? For right there, the divine sandals she placed, O king, grant all desires in this world and the next. You may ask, for what reason and cause is this so? Those who act according to dharma attain the highest twofold perfection. At that very time, rites such as sacrifice and charity were performed, and all the hells of Yama became empty. Then, O best of kings, all the gods gathered there. In the mortal world, we are greatly afflicted by actions, but seeing you, O Goddess, even those burdened by former sins attain perfection. Nor does the demon Bāṣkala go forth; you must do likewise. Leaving your own sandals there, place them upon the stone that has arisen. When the sandals were set down for the protection from Bāṣkala, the gods rejoiced. Oppressed by the weight of my sandals, that demon, O best of gods, cannot move. This entire teaching has been composed by me for the sake of the sandals. Whoever, with devotion, follows my sandals by this path of scripture—on the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra, I am always here on Arbuda. This mountain is dear to me; my mind did not incline to abandon it. Praised by the gods, she ascended to heaven, leaving behind those auspicious sandals. Even today, yogis intent on meditation attain perfection here.
