As the peaks of the golden-adorned mountains trembled, the forests swayed in response, alive with anticipation. All the seasons, led by the radiant Spring, joyfully emerged, filling the world with their vibrant presence. Gatherings of beings from every realm—those accomplished in spiritual practice, and the greatest of sages—assembled, drawn to witness the unfolding moment. The air became saturated with the exquisite fragrance of camphor blended with saffron powder, a scent both uplifting and soothing. Soon, the atmosphere resounded with the rhythms of sacred drums: the mṛdaṅga, karaṭala, jhallarī, paṭaha, and dundubhi, their beats echoing through the heavens. Celestial women danced ceaselessly, their movements accompanied by the melodious singing and music of tumbaru lutes. Into this divine celebration, Shiva, the ocean of compassion, approached Parvati, who stood with her face lowered in modesty. Gracefully, Shiva walked beside his beloved, surrounded by the assembly of gods and great sages. The king of the gods had offered him auspicious cloths, fragrant with the scents carried by gentle breezes. Adorned with garlands and smeared with sandal paste, Shiva and Parvati appeared splendidly decorated in pure white. Parvati’s auspicious fragrance was heightened by her beauty, her firm, high, dense, bud-like breasts. Though she had enjoyed countless amusements, she had grown thin from the pain of separation from her beloved. With curiosity and reverence, the mountain’s daughter bowed to Shiva—the destroyer of the city—for the protection of the three worlds. With deep longing, Parvati requested Shambhu for a union that would never be broken, expressing her wish for the welfare of the world. She spoke earnestly, “This form of yours, so delightful to behold, must not be abandoned. This beautiful form brings good fortune to the world. Let it always be seen by all, endowed with a divine fragrance. O Lord, be victorious, adorned with fearsome and wondrous forms. Adorned with jeweled ornaments, roam freely, O Great Lord. Let the Lord of the gods be served here with dance, music, and song. By your grace, O Lord, this fragrance is nourishing and life-enhancing. Here, O Lord of the gods, you have assumed the form embodying all mantras. Constantly, there are thousands of offenses arising from knowledge and ignorance.” Hearing these heartfelt words from the goddess, Śambhu, Lord of Śoṇācala, was delighted. Desiring union, Shiva spoke to Gaurī with joy. He granted her boon, bestowing upon her a wondrous and supreme fragrance. With this gift, Parvati’s own fragrance enchanted the celestial women. Responding to the gods’ request, Shiva summoned the lord of the demons, who approached with a devoted mind, worshipped Shiva, and spoke: “May the divine fragrance arising from my body, enchanting the world, be yours. Let what arises from your hair and sweat always be renowned. Beloved of you, it bestows radiance, fortune, beauty, and charm. Always highly esteemed by the goddess, who is eager for divine fragrance. Let them merge into your form, O Lord of the gods, under the pretext of anointing.” The demon relinquished his own body, entrusting his life to Shiva. Out of love, Shiva upheld that which increases the passion of love a hundredfold. Now, separated, the demon’s body was extinguished. Then, the Great Lord anointed Parvati, the abode of love. Seeing something that had risen in her hand, the Mother of the World wondered, “What is this?” She beheld the arrival of that flower, always present in her own hand, a marvel and a blessing, marking the culmination of this divine union.
