After meditating deeply, the devotee should approach me—Shiva—and perform circumambulation, moving reverently around my form. Whoever, with single-minded focus, circumambulates me, the Lord of the Red Mountain, and especially those who undertake the sacred circuit around Mount Shona, are showered with blessings beyond compare. Among mortals on earth who walk this path around the Red Mountain, countless celestial chariots, filled with hosts of divine attendants, come forth to serve them. A great and sanctified path is revealed, leading directly to the lotus feet of Shiva. The one who completes this circumambulation gains a body as hard as diamond, becoming invulnerable to harm on earth. They move about unseen by ordinary eyes, yet they are always able to behold my presence. Filled with joy at this vision, they themselves become givers of boons to mortals. Every day, along this sacred path, tens of millions of these blessed beings are seated, radiant and content. Throughout the universe, wherever it is filled with life and light, all such devotees attain the status of planetary lords. Breaking through even the brilliance of the sun, they are released from worldly bonds and journey to Shiva’s own city. There, having become ageless and immortal, they remain ever gracious on earth, free from all debts and obligations, sovereign over all realms. They attain omniscience and mastery over speech itself. By circumambulating Mount Shona to the right, such a devotee becomes a teacher to the worlds. Not only do they gain great prosperity, but they also reach the abode of Vishnu. Freed from the afflictions caused by planetary influences, they become victorious over the universe. For those who perform my circumambulation, merit arises swiftly, their actions yield the results they desire, and auspiciousness always follows them. The very syllables of the mountain’s name—‘kṣi’ diminishing karma, ‘ṇa’ granting liberation—embody its power. Having completed this sacred act, they are freed from all misdeeds. In but a moment, O virtuous one, I perceive that the circumambulation of my mountain is as meritorious as circling the three worlds themselves. Those who have performed this rite in the past became steadfast rulers. At the sacred conjunction of Uttarāyaṇa, I myself perform circumambulation for the welfare of the three worlds. In this way, the sinless one, having completed the circuit, will again approach me. At dusk, Gaurī herself arranges my circumambulation. By the prayer of the goddess, upon beholding the Jyotirliṅga, she reassures all the gods at the turning of Uttarāyaṇa. There, all divine lineages gather together, and they find atonement for the multitude of sins accumulated over countless births. Having worshipped my form, let all humans attain the fulfillment of their aims. I, Shiva, promise to go ahead of my devotees and conquer their enemies for them. For each, there will be stable rule and the defeat of their foes. One should never perform my circumambulation using a vehicle, for the act must be undertaken on foot, with humility. Once, King Dharmaketu came from the realm of Yama. In a moment, a horse was born, and Gaṇanātha was worshipped by the gods. When that vehicle, bearing the form of Gaṇanātha, was seen again, it was a sign of the divine’s presence and blessing. Thus, all who approach me with devotion, performing this sacred circumambulation, are granted blessings, fulfillment, protection, and liberation.
