With a single, purposeful step, the devotee traverses the entire earthly world; with the second, he crosses the vast expanse of the mid-space. Each step is not merely a movement through space, but a journey of purification: the first step dissolves sins born in the mind, the second wipes away those committed by speech. Indeed, with just one step, all sins are washed away, leaving the soul pure. In this sacred realm, countless hermitages of great sages and perfected beings stand, their presence sanctifying the land. Here, I dwell eternally, ever-perfect, at the forefront—worshipped by the gods themselves. It is said that my form here is like a pillar of fire, beginning with a radiant red hue. This liṅga, the embodiment of my essence, shines with eight blazing forms, each one a manifestation of pure, resplendent light. Whoever circumambulates this liṅga is freed from the cycle of rebirth; liberation is assured. Even the dust from the feet of such a pilgrim purifies the entire earth. As he makes his way, he bows in every direction, meditates deeply, and offers praises with hands joined in reverence. Just as a woman nearing childbirth walks without distress, so does the devotee move untroubled, having bathed, clothed in pure garments, and adorned with sacred ash and rudrākṣa beads. The Manus and thousands of gods proceed ahead, clearing the path. The devotee considers the great crowds and the throng that may obstruct his way, yet his resolve remains firm. He may recite the names of Shiva with melodious songs, or listen with undistracted mind and deep reverence to the stories of my greatness. Through various acts of generosity and kindness to those in need, he accrues further merit. In the Kṛta age, the liṅga appeared as fire; in the Tretā, as a mountain of jewels. Sometimes it is seen as crystal, or red and self-luminous—ever beyond the grasp of speech and mind, immeasurable in its true nature. Therefore, after meditating, one should approach and circumambulate me directly. He who assumes a single, focused form while circumambulating the Lord of the Red Mountain—Mount Shona—joins the ranks of the blessed. Of those mortals who undertake this sacred journey, hundreds of millions of aerial chariots filled with hosts of attendants come forth to serve them. A great and holy path is revealed, leading straight to the very feet of Shiva. Such a devotee attains a body as hard as diamond, invulnerable on earth. Though they move about unseen, they behold my presence directly. Filled with joy at this vision, they grant boons to mortals. Every day, along the sacred path, multitudes—each numbering in tens of millions—gather and are uplifted. Throughout the universe, all who have completed this pilgrimage attain exalted status, becoming lords of planetary realms. Breaking through the very orb of the sun, the devotee is released and journeys to the city of Shiva. There, he attains agelessness and immortality, and remains ever gracious on earth, completely free from debts of any kind, sovereign over all. Having gained omniscience, he becomes master of speech, teacher of the worlds. By circumambulating Mount Shona to the right, he attains great prosperity and, ultimately, the abode of Vishnu. Freed from the afflictions of the planets, he becomes victorious over the universe itself. For all who perform my circumambulation, merit arises swiftly, and all their actions yield the results they desire.
