Guided by the sage Bhṛgu’s instructions, the devotee undertook worship of the revered Śoṇa mountain. He honored not only the mountain itself, but also the divine presences of Sarasvatī, Sāvitrī, Śrī, Bhūmi, and the sacred rivers that bless the land. In the eastern direction, Bhāskara—the radiant Sun—was worshipped, while Viśvāmitra was honored in the south. The boundaries of this holy region were established upon the mountains, set two yojanas apart, marking the domain where the lord of the Śoṇa mountain dwells. Upon the northern peak of the mountain, a magnificent banyan tree stood, its vast, circular shadow ever present. All around this sacred tree were eight liṅgas, each venerated by the guardians of the eight directions. Kings devoted to Śambhu, obedient to Śaṅkara’s commands, gathered here as well, joining in worship. Nearby, the great bakula tree flourished, renowned for granting the fruits of all desires to those who sought its blessings. The sages Agastya and Vasiṣṭha, after offering their worship, journeyed onward to the Aruṇa mountain. In ancient times, the river Śoṇa was born as the son of Hiraṇyagarbha, and to this day its pure waters flow through the region. In the northwestern direction, the holy place of Vayu shone with sanctity. To the north of the mountain, a sacred site gleamed with golden lotuses, and in the northeast lay the Kubera Tirtha, an excellent place of pilgrimage. In the western part of the mountain, the lotus-eyed Viṣṇu was present. Long ago, the nine planets bathed in these waters and thereby attained their celestial stations. Divine beings—Durga, Vinayaka, Skanda, Kshetrapala, and Sarasvatī—were worshipped here, as were the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, and Sarasvatī. These goddesses remain concealed, abiding constantly in the eastern and other directions. Many other divine and earthly rivers with auspicious waters are also present in this sacred landscape. In the southern part of the mountain, the renowned holy place of Agastya is found. Here, Agastya himself arrived, bathed, and was surrounded by groups of sages. In the northern part lies the auspicious Vashishtha Tirtha, where the venerable sage Vashishtha assembled at Meru. The great holy place called Ganga is situated in the northeast, and during the month of Kartika, all rivers beginning with Ganga gather there. Near the lord of Aruṇa mountain is the Brahmya sacred site, where, in the month of Margashirsha, the Grandfather Brahma descends from Brahmaloka to assemble. In the month of Pauṣa, divine beings gather, bathing at the sacred site with their companions. A great Śaiva sacred place is also present in the vicinity, where Śambhu, together with his attendants, bestows grace in the month of Māgha. In the direction of fire lies the sacred site Āgneya, which brings good fortune. Even Ananga, the god of love, bathes and assembles here in the month of Phālguna. In the southeast, the wondrous Vaiṣṇava sacred site is found, and in the month of Caitra, Viṣṇu, the lord of Lakṣmī, gathers there. In the direction of Kubera, the great Saura sacred site is manifest. During the month of Vaiśākha, devotees bathe and worship Atreśa throughout the day. Finally, the pure Āśvina sacred site is situated north of the abodes of Īśa and Brahma, completing this tapestry of holy places, each vibrant with divine presence and sanctity.
