वेदशास्त्रं समादाय बुद्ध्वा गुरुमुखात्स्वयम् कर्मणां फलमस्तीति बुद्धिरास्तिक्यमुच्यते
Taking up the Vedas and scriptures, having learned them directly from the teacher, the understanding that actions bear fruit is called faith.
बंधुराजभयाद्बुद्धिश्रद्धा सा च कनीयसी सर्वाभावे दरिद्रस्तु वाचा वा कर्मणा यजेत्
Faith arising from fear of relatives or kings is lesser; but if one has nothing at all, even a poor person should worship by word or by deed.
वाचिकं यजनं विद्यान्मंत्रस्तोत्रजपादिकम् तीर्थयात्राव्रताद्यं हि कायिकं यजनं विदुः
Know that verbal worship consists of recitation of mantras, hymns, and japa; pilgrimage, vows, and the like are considered bodily worship.
येन केनाप्युपायेन ह्यल्पं वा यदि वा बहु देवतार्पणबुद्ध्या च कृतं भोगाय कल्पते
By whatever means, whether little or much, whatever is offered with the intention of dedicating to the deity becomes fit for enjoyment.
तपश्चर्या च दानं च कर्तव्यमुभयं सदा प्रतिश्रयं प्रदातव्यं स्ववर्णगुणशोभितम्
Austerity and charity should always be performed; one should provide shelter adorned with the qualities of one's own class.
देवानां तृप्तये ऽत्यर्थं सर्वभोगप्रदं बुधैः इहा ऽमुत्रोत्तमं जन्मसदाभोगं लभेद्बुधः ईश्वरार्पणबुद्ध्या हि कृत्वा मोक्षफलं लभेत्
For the satisfaction of the gods, wise ones say that giving all enjoyments yields the best results in this world and the next; by offering with the intention of dedication to the Lord, one attains the fruit of liberation.
य इमं पठते ऽध्यायं यः शृणोति सदा नरः तस्य वैधर्मबुद्धिश्च ज्ञानसिद्धिः प्रजायते
Whoever recites or always listens to this chapter, for him arises right understanding and the accomplishment of knowledge.
पार्थिवप्रतिमापूजाविधानं ब्रूहि सत्तम येन पूजाविधानेन सर्वाभिष्टमवाप्यते
O noble one, tell the procedure for worship of an earthen image, by which, through proper worship, all desires are fulfilled.
सुसाधुपृष्टं युष्माभिः सदा सर्वार्थदायकम् सद्यो दुःखस्य शमनं शृणुत प्रब्रवीमि वः
You have asked well, for it always bestows all objectives; listen, I will tell you that which instantly removes suffering.
अपमृत्युहरं कालमृत्योश्चापि विनाशनम् सद्यः कलत्रपुत्रादिधनधान्यप्रदं द्विजाः
It removes untimely death and destroys death by time; O twice-born, it immediately grants wives, sons, wealth, and grain.
अन्नादिभोज्यं वस्त्रादिसर्वमुत्पद्यते यतः ततो मृदादिप्रतिमापूजाभीष्टप्रदा भुवि
Since all food and enjoyables, clothing, and everything arise from it, therefore, worship of an image made of clay and the like grants all desires on earth.
पुरुषाणां च नारीणामधिकारोत्र निश्चितम् नद्यां तडागे कूपे वा जलांतर्मृदमाहरेत्
For men and women alike, the right to this is established; one should collect clay from a river, pond, or well.
संशोध्य गंधचूर्णेन पेषयित्वा सुमंडपे हस्तेन प्रतिमां कुर्यात्क्षीरेण च सुसंस्कृताम्
After purifying it with fragrant powder and grinding it well in a clean pavilion, one should, by hand, make the image, well-prepared with milk.
अंगप्रत्यंगकोपेतामायुधैश्च समन्विताम् पद्मासनस्थितां कृत्वा पूजयेदादरेण हि
It should have all limbs and sub-limbs, be furnished with weapons, and be placed in the lotus posture; then one should worship it with respect.
विघ्नेशादित्यविष्णूनामंबायाश्च शिवस्य च शिवस्यशिवलिंगं च सर्वदा पूजयेद्द्विज
One should always worship the images of Gaṇeśa, the Sun, Viṣṇu, the Mother Goddess, and Śiva, and also the liṅga of Śiva, O twice-born.
षोडशैरुपचारैश्च कुर्यात्तत्फलसिद्धये पुष्पेण प्रोक्षणं कुर्यादभिषेकं समंत्रकम्
To attain the desired result, one should perform worship with sixteen offerings, sprinkle with flowers, and perform ablution with mantras.
शाल्यन्नेनैव नैवेद्यं सर्वं कुडवमानतः गृहे तु कुडवं ज्ञेयं मानुषे प्रस्थमिष्यते
The entire offering should be of rice food, measured by a kuḍava; in a household, a kuḍava is to be known as the measure, but for humans, a prastha is prescribed.
दैवे प्रस्थत्रयं योग्यं स्वयंभोः प्रस्थपञ्चकम् एवं पूर्णफलं विद्यादधिकं वै द्वयं त्रयम्
For the divine, three prasthas are suitable; for the self-born, five prasthas; thus, one should know the full result, and two or three more give an even greater result.
सहस्रपूजया सत्यं सत्यलोकं लभेद्द्विजः द्वादशांगुलमायामं द्विगुणं च ततो ऽधिकम्
By performing a thousand worships, truly, a twice-born attains the world of truth; the measure is twelve finger-breadths, or even twice or more than that.
प्रमाणमंगुलस्यैकं तदूर्ध्वं पञ्चकत्रयम् अयोदारुकृतं पात्रं शिवमित्युच्यते बुधैः
The measure above one finger-breadth is three sets of five; a vessel made of iron or wood is called 'śiva' by the wise.
तदष्टभागः प्रस्थः स्यात्तच्चतुःकुडवं मतम् दशप्रस्थं शतप्रस्थं सहस्रप्रस्थमेव च
One-eighth of a prastha is considered a prastha; that is regarded as four kuḍavas, ten prasthas, a hundred prasthas, and even a thousand prasthas.
जलतैलादिगंधानां यथायोग्यं च मानतः मानुषार्षस्वयंभूनां महापूजेति कथ्यते
For water, oil, and other fragrant substances, the measure should be as appropriate; for humans, sages, and the self-born, this is described as the great worship.
अभिषेकादात्मशुद्धिर्गंधात्पुण्यमवाप्यते आयुस्तृप्तिश्च नैवेद्याद्धूपादर्थमवाप्यते
From the ablution comes self-purification; from fragrance, merit is obtained; from the food offering, one gains longevity and satisfaction; from incense, one attains purpose.
दीपाज्ज्ञानमवाप्नोति तांबूलाद्भोगमाप्नुयात् तस्मात्स्नानादिकं षट्कं प्रयत्नेन प्रसाधयेत्
From the lamp, one attains knowledge; from betel, one obtains enjoyment; therefore, one should diligently prepare the sixfold ritual beginning with bathing.
नमस्कारो जपश्चैव सर्वाभीष्टप्रदावुभौ पूजान्ते च सदाकार्यौ भोगमोक्षार्थिभिर्नरैः
Salutation and recitation both grant all desired results; at the end of worship, they should always be performed by those seeking enjoyment or liberation.
संपूज्य मनसा पूर्वं कुर्यात्तत्तत्सदा नरः देवानां पूजया चैव तत्तल्लोकमवाप्नुयात्
Having first worshipped with the mind, one should always perform each act; and by worshipping the gods, one attains the corresponding world.
तदवांतरलोके च यथेष्टं भोग्यमाप्यते तद्विशेषान्प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणुत श्रद्धया द्विजाः
In that intermediate world, one enjoys as desired; I will explain those distinctions—listen with faith, O twice-born.
विघ्नेशपूजया सम्यग्भूर्लोके ऽभीष्टमाप्नुयात् शुक्रवारे चतुर्थ्यां च सिते श्रावणभाद्रके
By properly worshipping Vighneśa, one attains desired things in the earthly world, especially on a Friday or on the fourth day in the bright half of Śrāvaṇa or Bhādrapada.
भिषगृक्षे धनुर्मासे विघ्नेशं विधिवद्यजेत् शतं पूजासहस्रं वा तत्संख्याकदिनैर्व्रजेत्
In the constellation of the physician, in the month of Dhanu, one should worship Vighneśa according to rule; whether a hundred or a thousand worships, one should complete them in the corresponding number of days.
देवाग्निश्रद्धया नित्यं पुत्रदं चेष्टदं नृणाम् सर्वपापप्रशमनं तत्तद्दुरितनाशनम्
With faith, worship of the gods and fire always grants sons and desired things to men, removes all sins, and destroys every misfortune.
