भक्तानामप्रयत्नेन दृश्यमीश्वरमव्ययम् ब्रह्मेंद्रविष्णुरुद्राद्यैरपि देवैरगोचरम्
He is seen effortlessly by devotees, the imperishable Lord, yet is beyond the reach of gods like Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, and Rudra.
देवसारं च विद्वद्भिरगोचरमिति श्रुतम् आदिमध्यान्तरहितं भेषजं भवरोगिणाम्
He is known by the wise as the essence of the gods, yet is said to be beyond perception; without beginning, middle, or end, he is the remedy for those afflicted by worldly existence.
शिवतत्त्वमिति ख्यातं शिवार्थं जगति स्थिरम् पञ्चोपचारवद्भक्त्या पूजयेल्लिंगमुत्तमम्
This is known as the principle of Shiva, the enduring purpose of Shiva in the world; one should worship the supreme liṅga with fivefold offerings and devotion.
लिंगमूर्तिर्महेशस्य शिवस्य परमात्मनः स्नानकाले प्रकुर्वीत जयशब्दादिमंगलम्
The liṅga is the form of the great Lord, Shiva, the supreme Self; during the time of bathing, one should perform auspicious rites beginning with the sound of victory.
पञ्चगव्यघृतक्षीरदधिमध्वादिपूर्वकैः मूलैः फलानां सारैश्च तिलसर्षपसक्तुभिः
With the five products of the cow—ghee, milk, curd, honey, and so on—along with roots, the essences of fruits, and with sesame, mustard, and flour preparations,
बीजैर्यवादिभिश्शस्तैश्चूर्णैर्माषादिसंभवैः संस्नाप्यालिप्य पिष्टाद्यैः स्नापयेदुष्णवारिभिः
With wholesome seeds such as barley, with powders derived from black gram and others, one should bathe and anoint the liṅga with pastes and then bathe it with warm water.
घर्षयेद्विल्वपत्राद्यैर्लेपगंधापनुत्तये पुनः संस्नाप्य सलिलैश्चक्रवर्त्युपचारतः
One should rub with bilva leaves and the like to remove any residue of ointments and fragrances; then, bathing again with water, one should proceed according to the rites of a king.
सुगंधामलकं दद्याद्धरिद्रां च यथाक्रमम् ततः संशोध्य सलिलैर्लिंगं बेरमथापि वा
One should offer fragrant amalaki and turmeric in due order; then, purifying the liṅga or the image with water,
स्नापयेद्गंधतोयेन कुशपुष्पोदकेन च हिरण्यरत्नतोयैश्च मंत्रसिद्धैर्यथाक्रमम्
One should bathe it with fragrant water, with water containing kuśa grass and flowers, and with water infused with gold and jewels, empowered by mantras, in the proper sequence.
असंभवे तु द्रव्याणां यथासंभवसंभृतैः केवलैर्मंत्रतोयैर्वा स्नापयेच्छ्रद्धया शिवम्
If the substances are not available, then with whatever is obtainable, or even with water alone empowered by mantras, one should bathe Shiva with faith.
कलशेनाथ शंखेन वर्धन्या पाणिना तथा सकुशेन सपुष्पेण स्नापयेन्मंत्रपूर्वकम्
Then, with a pot, a conch, a vessel for increase, or with the hand, and also with kuśa grass and flowers, one should bathe with mantra recitation.
पवमानेन रुद्रेण नीलेन त्वरितेन च लिंगसूक्तादिसूक्तैश्च शिरसाथर्वणेन च
With the Pavamāna, Rudra, Nīla, and Tvarita hymns, and with the Liṅga Sūkta and other hymns, and with the Atharvaśiras as well,
ऋग्भिश्च सामभिः शैवैर्ब्रह्मभिश्चापि पञ्चभिः स्नापयेद्देवदेवेशं शिवेन प्रणवेन च
With verses from the Ṛg, Sāma, and five Śaiva Brahman hymns, and with the Praṇava of Shiva, one should bathe the Lord of gods.
यथा देवस्य देव्याश्च कुर्यात्स्नानादिकं तथा न तु कश्चिद्विशेषो ऽस्ति तत्र तौ सदृशौ यतः
Just as one performs bathing and other rites for the god, so also for the goddess; there is no distinction between them, for they are alike.
प्रथमं देवमुद्दिश्य कृत्वा स्नानादिकाः क्रियाः देव्यैः प्रश्चात्प्रकुर्वीत देवदेवस्य शासनात्
First, having performed the bathing and other rites for the god, one should then perform them for the goddess, according to the command of the Lord of gods.
अर्धनारीश्वरे पूज्ये पौर्वापर्यं न विद्यते तत्र तत्रोपचाराणां लिंगे वान्यत्र वा क्वचित्
In the worship of Ardhanārīśvara, there is no precedence of one over the other; in that case, the offerings may be made to the liṅga or elsewhere, as appropriate.
कृत्वा ऽभिषेकं लिंगस्य शुचिना च सुगंधिना संमृज्य वाससा दद्यादंबरं चोपवीतकम्
Having performed the abhiṣeka of the liṅga with pure and fragrant substances, one should wipe it with a cloth and offer a garment and a sacred thread.
पाद्यमाचमनं चार्घ्यं गंधं पुष्पं च भूषणम् धूपं दीपं च नैवेद्यं पानीयं मुखशोधनम्
One should offer water for washing the feet, water for sipping, arghya, fragrance, flowers, ornaments, incense, a lamp, food, drinking water, and mouth cleansing.
पुनश्चाचमनीयं च मुखवासं ततः परम् मुकुटं च शुभं भद्रं सर्वरत्नैरलंकृतम्
Again, water for sipping and then mouth perfume; after that, a beautiful and auspicious crown adorned with all kinds of jewels.
भूषणानि पवित्राणि माल्यानि विविधानि च व्यजने चामरे छत्रं तालवृंतं च दर्पणम्
Pure ornaments, various garlands, fans, yak-tail whisks, an umbrella, a palm-leaf fan, and a mirror.
दत्त्वा नीराजनं कुर्यात्सर्वमंगलनिस्वनैः गीतनृत्यादिभिश्चैव जयशब्दसमन्वितः
After offering the light, one should perform the ritual accompanied by all auspicious sounds, along with singing, dancing, and the exclamation of victory.
हैमे च राजते ताम्रे पात्रे वा मृन्मये शुभे पद्मकैश्शोभितैः पुष्पैर्बीजैर्दध्यक्षतादिभिः
In a vessel of gold, silver, copper, or auspicious clay, adorned with lotuses, beautiful flowers, seeds, curds, unbroken rice, and the like—
त्रिशूलशंखयुग्माब्जनन्द्यावर्तैः करीषजैः श्रीवत्सस्वस्तिकादर्शवज्रैर्वह्न्यादिचिह्नितैः
With tridents, pairs of conch shells, lotuses, nandyāvarta symbols, marks made from cow dung, Śrīvatsa, svastika, mirrors, vajra, fire, and other auspicious signs—
अष्टौ प्रदीपान्परितो विधायैकं तु मध्यमे तेषु वामादिकाश्चिन्त्याः पूज्याश्च नव शक्तयः
Placing eight lamps all around and one in the center, one should contemplate the goddesses beginning from the left, and worship the nine Śaktis.
कवचेन समाच्छाद्य संरक्ष्यास्त्रेण सर्वतः धेनुमुद्रां च संदर्श्य पाणिभ्यां पात्रमुद्धरेत्
Covering it with a protective mantra and guarding it on all sides with weapons, showing the cow mudrā with both hands, one should lift the vessel.
अथवारोपयेत्पात्रे पञ्चदीपान्यथाक्रमम् विदिक्ष्वपि च मध्ये च दीपमेकमथापि वा
Alternatively, one may place five lamps in the vessel in order, or one lamp in the directions and in the center, or even just one lamp.
ततस्तत्पात्रमुद्धृत्य लिंगादेरुपरि क्रमात् त्रिः प्रदक्षिणयोगेन भ्रामयेन्मूलविद्यया
Then, taking up that vessel, one should, in order, circle it three times around the liṅga or other image, using the root mantra.
दद्यादर्घ्यं ततो मूर्ध्नि भसितं च सुगंधितम् कृत्वा पुष्पांजलिं पश्चादुपहारान्निवेदयेत्
Afterwards, one should offer arghya on the head, and fragrant ash; then, making an offering of flowers in the hands, present the food offering.
पानीयं च ततो दद्याद्दत्त्वा वाचमनं पुनः पञ्चसौगंधिकोपेतं ताम्बूलं च निवेदयेत्
Then one should offer water, and after giving water for rinsing the mouth, present betel with five kinds of fragrance.
प्रोक्षयेत्प्रोक्षणीयानि गाननाट्यानि कारयेत् लिंगादौ शिवयोश्चिन्तां कृत्वा शक्त्यजपेच्छिवम्
One should sprinkle what is to be sprinkled, arrange singing and dancing, meditate on Śiva and others at the liṅga, and silently recite the Śakti mantra.
