Whether round, square, a dot, or crescent, whichever form of mark is drawn with ash on the forehead—
That same mark should be drawn on the arms, on the crown of the head, and between the breasts; but the full body anointment is not the same as the tripuṇḍra marks.
Therefore, one should draw only the tripuṇḍra, without the full anointment; and wear rudrākṣa beads on the head, neck, ears, and hands.
They should be golden in color, unbroken, auspicious, and not worn by others; for brāhmaṇas and others, the best are yellow, then red, and then black.
If those are not available, one should wear whatever is obtained, provided it is pure; even then, the lower ones should not be worn by the higher, nor the higher by the lower.
One who is impure should never wear the beads; they should always be worn at the proper times—thus, at the three junctions of the day, or at least twice, or even once.
Having performed bathing and other purificatory acts as able, one should worship the Supreme Lord, having reached the place of worship and arranged a pleasing seat.
Facing east or north, one should meditate on the god and the goddess; then, bow to the white-clad, peaceful disciples and to the teacher.
Again bowing to the god Shiva, one should then recite the eight names: Shiva, Maheshvara, Rudra, Vishnu, Pitamaha,
Healer of the world, all-knower, and Supreme Self—these are the eight; or, reciting only 'Shiva' with the eleventh added.
Meditating at the tip of the tongue on a mass of light for the removal of disease and the like, having washed the feet and anointed the hands with sandal paste, one should perform the hand-nyasa, beginning with purification of the hands.
Nyasa is said to be threefold, according to the order of maintenance, creation, and dissolution; maintenance-nyasa is for householders, creation-nyasa for celibates.
For ascetics, dissolution-nyasa is prescribed, and likewise for forest-dwellers; for a married woman without a husband, maintenance-nyasa applies.
For a maiden, I will now describe creation-nyasa and its characteristics: from the thumb to the little finger is called maintenance-nyasa.
Beginning from the right thumb and ending at the left thumb is known as creation-nyasa; the reverse is dissolution-nyasa.
One should place the syllables from 'na' to 'ma' with bindu, in order, on the fingers, and place Shiva on the palms and ring fingers.
Then, having performed the weapon-nyasa, one should place the weapon-mantra in the ten directions; the five kalas beginning with nivritti, embodying the five elements,
Together with the lords of the five elements, marked with their respective signs, they are established in the heart, throat, palate, between the brows, and the crown of the head.
Binding each with its respective seed-syllable, one should contemplate them in their respective seeds; for their purification, one should recite the five-syllabled mantra.
Restraining the breath according to the number of gunas, one should then cut the elemental knots with the weapon-mantra and the gesture of the weapon.
With the breath directed through the suṣumnā channel, having sent the self upward, one should unite it, having exited through the crown, with the radiance of Shiva.
After drying the body with the breath, one should burn it with the fire of time; then, by the upward movement, gather the kalas with the breath.
Having dissolved and burned the body, touching the kalas with the ocean, one should flood the body with nectar and restore it to its proper place.
Then, having dissolved and burned, without the creation of kalas, one should flood with nectar even what has become ashes.
Then, within that body composed of knowledge, one should unite the self, which is of the form of a lamp's flame and which has emerged from Śiva, with the Brahmarandhra.
Meditating on that which has entered within the body, in the lotus of the heart, one should again anoint the body made of knowledge with a shower of nectar.
Then one should perform the assignment of the hands, preceded by their purification, and afterwards the assignment of the body, employing the great seal.
After performing the assignment of the limbs according to the method taught by Śiva, one should then assign the letters at the joints of the hands, feet, and other places.
Next, one should assign the six limbs, together with the six classes, and then perform the binding of the directions in order, beginning with the southeast.
Alternatively, one may perform only the assignment of the five limbs, beginning with the head, and likewise the assignment of the six limbs, omitting the purification of the elements and the like.
