If one is unable to perform the Varuṇa bath, one should, wearing clean clothes, cleanse the body from the soles of the feet to the crown with wetness.
Alternatively, one may perform the fire ritual bath, the mantra bath, or the Śiva bath; for one absorbed in contemplation of Śiva, such bathing is considered one's own.
According to the procedure stated in one's own sūtra, preceded by mantra and ācamana, one should perform the Brahma-yajña, and then offer libations to the gods and others.
Meditating on Mahādeva established in the maṇḍala and worshipping him as prescribed, one should then offer arghya to Śiva, who is of the form of the sun.
Or, having done as prescribed in one's own sūtra, one should purify the hands, then perform the ritual gestures, and thus become fully prepared.
With water held in the left hand, mixed with fragrant substances and sesame seeds, or by sprinkling with a bundle of kuśa grass, accompanied by root mantras, one should perform the ablution.
With the mantras beginning with 'āpohiṣṭha', after smelling the remaining water, one should honor the deity with water taken in the left nostril.
Taking the arghya, one should contemplate the deity as present within one's own body with the left nostril, and as external, dark-hued, established in the stone.
Then, one should offer libations to the gods, especially to the sages, to the beings, and to the ancestors, presenting arghya according to the prescribed method.
With water mixed with red sandalwood, one should create a circular area on the ground, the size of a hand, well-formed and adorned with red powder and similar substances.
There, one should worship the Sun together with his attendants, reciting the mantra 'svakholkāya' for the attainment of happiness and success.
Again, having made the circle and worshipped its limbs, one should place there a golden vessel, measured by the Māgadha prastha.
One should fill it with fragrant water blended with red sandalwood, along with red flowers, sesame seeds, and accompanied by kuśa grass and unbroken grains of rice.
With dūrvā grass, apāmārga, cow's milk, or simply pure water, approaching the ground on the knees, bowing to the deity within the circle—
Having placed that vessel on the head, one should offer arghya to Śiva; or, with joined palms and water with darbha grass, reciting the root mantra.
One should lift up the offering to Śiva, who abides in the sky, in the form of the Sun; then, again perform the ritual gestures for the hands, after purifying them.
Understanding Śiva as composed of the five Brahmans, from Īśāna to Sadyaṃta, one should take sacred ash, recite mantras, and apply it to the limbs.
Beginning with the head, face, heart, secret parts, and feet, in order, then with the root mantra, one should touch all the limbs and change into clean garments.
Having put on the garment, bowing twice, one should sprinkle it with water sanctified by eleven mantras, or cover the cloth, bow twice, and remember Śiva.
Again, with hands placed down, the practitioner should draw the tripuṇḍra with ash, distinctly and in order, on the forehead with fragrant water.
Whether round, square, a dot, or crescent, whichever form of mark is drawn with ash on the forehead—
That same mark should be drawn on the arms, on the crown of the head, and between the breasts; but the full body anointment is not the same as the tripuṇḍra marks.
Therefore, one should draw only the tripuṇḍra, without the full anointment; and wear rudrākṣa beads on the head, neck, ears, and hands.
They should be golden in color, unbroken, auspicious, and not worn by others; for brāhmaṇas and others, the best are yellow, then red, and then black.
If those are not available, one should wear whatever is obtained, provided it is pure; even then, the lower ones should not be worn by the higher, nor the higher by the lower.
One who is impure should never wear the beads; they should always be worn at the proper times—thus, at the three junctions of the day, or at least twice, or even once.
Having performed bathing and other purificatory acts as able, one should worship the Supreme Lord, having reached the place of worship and arranged a pleasing seat.
Facing east or north, one should meditate on the god and the goddess; then, bow to the white-clad, peaceful disciples and to the teacher.
Again bowing to the god Shiva, one should then recite the eight names: Shiva, Maheshvara, Rudra, Vishnu, Pitamaha,
Healer of the world, all-knower, and Supreme Self—these are the eight; or, reciting only 'Shiva' with the eleventh added.
