सिंदूरवर्णाय सुमण्डलाय सुवर्णवर्णाभरणाय तुभ्यम् पद्माभनेत्राय सपंकजाय ब्रह्मेन्द्रनारायणकारणाय
To you, who are of vermilion hue, perfectly formed, adorned with golden ornaments, lotus-eyed, holding a lotus, and the cause of Brahmā, Indra, and Nārāyaṇa,
सुरत्नपूर्णं ससुवर्णतोयं सुकुंकुमाद्यं सकुशं सपुष्पम् प्रदत्तमादाय सहेमपात्रं प्रशस्तमर्घ्यं भगवन्प्रसीद
We offer you the most excellent arghya, filled with precious gems, gold, water, fine saffron, kuśa grass, and flowers, presented in a golden vessel—O Lord, be gracious.
नमश्शिवाय शांताय सगणायादिहेतवे रुद्राय विष्णवे तुभ्यं ब्रह्मणे सूर्यमूर्तये
Salutations to Śiva, the peaceful one, with his attendants, the primal cause; to Rudra, to Viṣṇu, to you, to Brahmā, and to the sun-formed one.
यश्शिवं मण्डले सौरे संपूज्यैव समाहितः प्रातर्मध्याह्नसायाह्ने प्रदद्यादर्घ्यमुत्तमम्
Whoever, with concentrated mind, worships Śiva in the solar maṇḍala and offers the finest arghya in the morning, at noon, and in the evening—
प्रणमेद्वा पठेदेताञ्छ्लोकाञ्छ्रुतिमुखानिमान् न तस्य दुर्ल्लभं किंचिद्भक्तश्चेन्मुच्यते दृढम्
One should bow and recite these verses, which are the essence of the scriptures; for a devoted person, nothing is unattainable, and he is firmly liberated.
तस्मादभ्यर्चयेनित्यं शिवमादित्यरूपिणम् धर्मकामार्थमुक्त्यर्थं मनसा कर्मणा गिरा
Therefore, one should always worship Shiva, who is in the form of the sun, for the sake of righteousness, desire, wealth, and liberation, with mind, action, and speech.
अथ देवान्समालोक्य मण्डलस्थो महेश्वरः सर्वागमोत्तरं दत्त्वा शास्त्रमंतरधाद्धरः
Then, seeing the gods, Maheshvara, seated in the circle, imparted the supreme scripture of all traditions and then vanished.
तत्र पूजाधिकारो ऽयं ब्रह्मक्षत्रविशामिति ज्ञात्वा प्रणम्य देवेशं देवा जग्मुर्यथागतम्
There, knowing that the right to worship belongs to Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, the gods bowed to the Lord of the gods and departed as they had come.
अथ कालेन महता तस्मिञ्छास्त्रे तिरोहिते भर्तारं परिपप्रच्छ तदंकस्था महेश्वरी
After a long time, when that scripture had disappeared, Maheshvari, seated on the lap of her husband, questioned him.
तया स चोदितो देवो देव्या चन्द्रविभूषणः अवदत्करमुद्धृत्य शास्त्रं सर्वागमोत्तरम्
Prompted by the goddess, the god adorned with the moon raised his hand and spoke, revealing the supreme scripture of all traditions.
प्रवर्तितं च तल्लोके नियोगात्परमेष्ठिनः मयागस्त्येन गुरुणा दधीचेन महर्षिणा
By the command of the supreme lord, that scripture was propagated in the world by me, Agastya the teacher, and Dadhichi the great sage.
स्वयमप्यवतीर्योर्व्यां युगावर्तेषु शूलधृक् स्वाश्रितानां विमुक्त्यर्थं कुरुते ज्ञानसंततिम्
He himself descends to earth in the cycles of ages, bearing the trident, and for the liberation of his followers, establishes the continuity of knowledge.
ऋभुस्सत्यो भार्गवश्च ह्यंगिराः सविता द्विजाः मृत्युः शतक्रतुर्धीमान्वसिष्ठो मुनिपुंगवः
Ṛbhu, Satya, Bhārgava, Aṅgirā, Savitṛ, the twice-born, Mṛtyu, Śatakratu the wise, and Vasiṣṭha, the foremost sage,
सारस्वतस्त्रिधामा च त्रिवृतो मुनिपुंगवः शततेजास्स्वयं धर्मो नारायण इति श्रुतः
Sārasvata, Tridhāmā, Trivṛta, the eminent sage, Śatatejas, Dharma himself, and Nārāyaṇa, as heard in tradition,
स्वरक्षश्चारुणिर्धीमांस्तथा चैव कृतंजयः कृतंजयो भरद्वाजो गौतमः कविरुत्तमः
Svara, Rakṣa, Āruṇi the wise, and Kṛtaṃjaya; Kṛtaṃjaya, Bharadvāja, Gautama, the foremost poet,
वाचःस्रवा मुनिस्साक्षात्तथा सूक्ष्मायणिः शुचिः तृणबिंदुर्मुनिः कृष्णः शक्तिः शाक्तेय उत्तरः
Vācaḥsravā the sage in person, Sūkṣmāyaṇi the pure, Tṛṇabiṃdu the sage, Kṛṣṇa, Śakti, and Śākteya the superior,
जातूकर्ण्यो हरिस्साक्षात्कृष्णद्वैपायनो मुनिः व्यासावताराञ्छृण्वंतु कल्पयोगेश्वरान्क्रमात्
Jātūkarṇya, Hari in person, Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana the sage; let them hear the incarnations of Vyāsa and the masters of yoga in order.
लैंगे व्यासावतारा हि द्वापरां तेषु सुव्रताः योगाचार्यावताराश्च तथा शिष्येषु शूलिनः
In the Linga tradition, the incarnations of Vyāsa in the Dvāpara age are those of noble vows; likewise, the incarnations of yoga teachers and the disciples of the wielder of the trident.
तत्र तत्र विभोः शिष्याश्चत्वारः स्युर्महौजसः शिष्यास्तेषां प्रशिष्याश्च शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः
In each place, the Lord's disciples are four, possessing great energy; their disciples and grand-disciples are in the hundreds and thousands.
तेषां संभावनाल्लोके शैवाज्ञाकरणादिभिः भाग्यवंतो विमुच्यंते भक्त्या चात्यंतभाविताः
Through their influence in the world, by carrying out the commands of Shiva and similar acts, the fortunate are liberated, being deeply devoted with utmost faith.
युगावर्तेषु सर्वेषु योगाचार्यच्छलेन तु अवतारान्हि शर्वस्य शिष्यांश्च भगवन्वद
In all cycles of ages, under the guise of yoga teachers, tell me, O Lord, the incarnations of Śarva and his disciples.
श्वेतः सुतारो मदनः सुहोत्रः कङ्क एव च लौगाक्षिश्च महामायो जैगीषव्यस्तथैव च
Śveta, Sutāra, Madana, Suhotra, Kaṅka, Laugākṣi, Mahāmāya, and Jaigīṣavya likewise.
दधिवाहश्च ऋषभो मुनिरुग्रो ऽत्रिरेव च सुपालको गौतमश्च तथा वेदशिरा मुनिः
Dadhivāha, Ṛṣabha, the sage Ugra, Atri, Supālaka, Gautama, and the sage Vedaśirā—
गोकर्णश्च गुहावासी शिखण्डी चापरः स्मृतः जटामाली चाट्टहासो दारुको लांगुली तथा
Gokarṇa, Guhāvāsin, another called Śikhaṇḍin, Jaṭāmālī, Aṭṭahāsa, Dāruka, and likewise Lāṃgulī—
महाकालश्च शूली च डंडी मुण्डीश एव च सविष्णुस्सोमशर्मा च लकुलीश्वर एव च
Mahākāla, Śūlī, Ḍaṇḍī, Muṇḍīśa, Saviṣṇu, Somaśarmā, and Lakulīśvara—
एते वाराह कल्पे ऽस्मिन्सप्तमस्यांतरो मनोः अष्टाविंशतिसंख्याता योगाचार्या युगक्रमात्
These, in this Varāha Kalpa, during the interval of the seventh Manu, numbering twenty-eight, were teachers of yoga in each age.
शिष्याः प्रत्येकमेतेषां चत्वारश्शांतचेतसः श्वेतादयश्च रुष्यांतांस्तान्ब्रवीमि यथाक्रमम्
Each of these had four disciples of tranquil mind; beginning with Śveta and ending with Ruṣya, I will name them in order.
श्वेतश्श्वेतशिखश्चैव श्वेताश्वः श्वेतलोहितः दुन्दुभिश्शतरूपश्च ऋचीकः केतुमांस्तथा
Śveta, Śvetaśikha, Śvetāśva, Śvetalohita, Dundubhi, Śatarūpa, Ṛcīka, and Ketumān—
विकोशश्च विकेशश्च विपाशः पाशनाशनः सुमुखो दुर्मुखश्चैव दुर्गमो दुरतिक्रमः
Vikośa, Vikeśa, Vipāśa, Pāśanāśana, Sumukha, Durmukha, Durgama, and Duratikrama—
सनत्कुमारस्सनकः सनंदश्च सनातनः सुधामा विरजाश्चैव शंखश्चांडज एव च
Sanatkumāra, Sanaka, Sanaṃda, Sanātana, Sudhāmā, Virajā, Śaṃkha, and Aṇḍaja—
