तद्वज्रं निजवज्रेण संसृष्टमिव सर्वतः तृणेनाभिहतं तेन तिर्यगग्रं पपात ह
That thunderbolt, meeting the Yakṣa’s own, was struck in every way by the blade of grass and fell sideways to the ground.
ततश्चान्ये सुसंरब्धा लोकपाला महाबलाः ससृजुस्तृणमुद्दिश्य स्वायुधानि सहस्रशः
Then, other mighty guardians of the worlds, enraged, hurled their weapons by the thousands at the blade of grass.
प्रजज्ज्वाल महावह्निः प्रचंडः पवनो ववौ प्रवृद्धो ऽपांपतिर्यद्वत्प्रलये समुपस्थिते
A great fire blazed forth, a fierce wind blew, and the lord of waters swelled, as happens when dissolution approaches.
एवं देवैस्समारब्धं तृणमुद्दिश्य यत्नतः व्यर्थमासीदहो कृष्ण यक्षस्यात्मबलेन वै
Thus, O Krishna, all the gods, striving together against the blade of grass, were rendered futile by the Yakṣa’s own power.
तदाह यक्षं देवेंद्रः को भवानित्यमर्षितः ततस्स पश्यतामेव तेषामंतरधादथ
Then Indra, the lord of the gods, angrily said to the Yaksha, 'Who are you?' But as they all watched, he vanished from sight.
तदंतरे हैमवती देवी दिव्यविभूषणा आविरासीन्नभोरंगे शोभमाना शुचिस्मिता
At that moment, the goddess of the Himalayas, adorned with divine ornaments, appeared in the sky, radiant and smiling beautifully.
तां दृष्ट्वा विस्मयाविष्टा देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः प्रणम्य यक्षं पप्रच्छुः को ऽसौ यक्षो विलक्षणः
Seeing her, the gods led by Shakra were filled with wonder; bowing to her, they asked the Yaksha, 'Who is this extraordinary Yaksha?'
सा ऽब्रवीत्सस्मितं देवी स युष्माकमगोचरः तेनेदं भ्रम्यते चक्रं संसाराख्यं चराचरम्
Smiling, the goddess replied, 'He is beyond your perception. By him, this wheel called samsara, moving and unmoving, is set in motion.'
तेनादौ क्रियते विश्वं तेन संह्रियते पुनः न तन्नियन्ता कश्चित्स्यात्तेन सर्वं नियम्यते
By him, the universe is created at first, and by him it is again dissolved; there is no other controller—by him alone all is governed.
इत्युक्त्वा सा महादेवी तत्रैवांतरधत्त वै देवाश्च विस्मिताः सर्वे तां प्रणम्य दिवं ययुः
Having spoken thus, the great goddess vanished there itself; and all the gods, amazed, bowed to her and returned to heaven.
शृणु कृष्ण महेशस्य शिवस्य परमात्मनः मूर्त्यात्मभिस्ततं कृत्स्नं जगदेतच्चराचरम्
Hear, O Krishna, of the forms of Mahesha, Shiva, the Supreme Self, by whose embodiments this entire world, moving and unmoving, is pervaded.
स शिवस्सर्वमेवेदं स्वकीयाभिश्च मूर्तिभिः अधितिष्ठत्यमेयात्मा ह्येतत्सर्वमनुस्मृतम्
That Shiva, the immeasurable Self, abides in all this by his own forms; all this is remembered as his.
ब्रह्मा विष्णुस्तथा रुद्रो महेशानस्सदाशिवः मूर्तयस्तस्य विज्ञेया याभिर्विश्वमिदं ततम्
Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Maheshana, and Sadashiva—these are known as his forms, by which this universe is pervaded.
अथान्याश्चापि तनवः पञ्च ब्रह्मसमाह्वयाः तनूभिस्ताभिराव्याप्तमिह किंचिन्न विद्यते
Moreover, there are other forms as well, five called the Brahmas; by these bodies, everything here is pervaded, and nothing remains outside them.
ईशानः पुरुषो ऽघोरो वामः सद्यस्तथैव च ब्रह्माण्येतानि देवस्य मूर्तयः पञ्च विश्रुताः
Ishana, Purusha, Aghora, Vama, and Sadya—these five forms of the god are renowned as the Brahmas.
ईशानाख्या तु या तस्य मूर्तिराद्या गरीयसी भोक्तारं प्रकृतेः साक्षात्क्षेत्रज्ञमधितिष्ठति
The form called Ishana, the foremost and most exalted, directly presides over the enjoyer of nature, the knower of the field.
स्थाणोस्तत्पुरुषाख्या या मूर्तिर्मूर्तिमतः प्रभोः गुणाश्रयात्मकं भोग्यमव्यक्तमधितिष्ठति
The form of the Lord called Tatpurusha, the steadfast one, presides over the unmanifest, the object of experience, which is based in the qualities.
धर्माद्यष्टांगसंयुक्तं बुद्धितत्त्वं पिनाकिनः अधितिष्ठत्यघोराख्या मूर्तिरत्यंतपूजिता
The highly revered form called Aghora of Pinakin presides over the principle of intellect, endowed with dharma and the other eight limbs.
वामदेवाह्वयां मूर्तिं महादेवस्य वेधसः अहंकृतेरधिष्ठात्रीमाहुरागमवेदिनः
Those learned in the Agamas say that the form of Mahadeva called Vamadeva presides over ahamkara.
सद्यो जाताह्वयां मूर्तिं शम्भोरमितवर्चसः मानसः समधिष्ठात्रीं मतिमंतः प्रचक्षते
The form of Shambhu called Sadyojata, of immeasurable splendor, is said to preside over the mind.

All those skilled in the meaning of the Puranas know that the form called Purusha, lordly among forms, presides over skin, hand, touch, and wind.
चक्षुषश्चरणस्यापि रूपस्याग्नेस्तथैव च अघोराख्यामधिष्ठात्रीं मूर्तिमाहुर्मनीषिणः
The wise declare that the form called Aghora presides over the eye, the foot, form, and likewise fire.
रमनायाश्च पायोश्च रसस्यापां तथैव च ईश्वरीं वामदेवाख्यां मूर्तिं तन्निरतां विदुः
They know the form called Vamadeva, the sovereign, as devoted to pleasure, to the tongue, to taste, and likewise to water.
घ्राणस्य चैवोपस्थस्य गंधस्य च भुवस्तथा सद्यो जाताह्वयां मूर्तिमीश्वरीं संप्रचक्षते
They speak of the form called Sadyojata, the sovereign, as presiding over the nose, the generative organ, scent, and likewise earth.
मूर्तयः पञ्च देवस्य वंदनीयाः प्रयत्नतः श्रेयोर्थिभिर्नरैर्नित्यं श्रेयसामेकहेतवः
The five forms of the god are to be reverently worshipped always by those who seek the highest good, for they are the sole cause of all auspiciousness.
तस्य देवादिदेवस्य मूर्त्यष्टकमयं जगत् तस्मिन्व्याप्य स्थितं विश्वं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव
Of that god, the god of gods, the world is composed of eight forms; pervading them, the universe abides in him, as clusters of jewels on a string.

Ishana, the great god, and the eight renowned forms are declared.
भूम्यंभोग्निमरुद्व्योमक्षेत्रज्ञार्कनिशाकराः अधिष्ठिता महेशस्य शर्वाद्यैरष्टमूर्तिभिः
Earth, water, fire, wind, space, the knower of the field, the sun, and the moon are presided over by Mahesha through the eight forms beginning with Sharva.
चराचरात्मकं विश्वं धत्ते विश्वंभरात्मिका शार्वीर्शिवाह्वया मूर्तिरिति शास्त्रस्य निश्चयः
The form called Sharvi, also known as Shiva, upholds the universe, consisting of the moving and the unmoving, as the essence of the supporter of the world; this is the settled conclusion of the scripture.
