आवृत्त्या तां महादेवीमसेवंत समंततः अतीव शुशुभे तासामंतरे परमेश्वरी

Surrounding the great goddess, they served her on all sides; among them, the supreme goddess shone exceedingly.

तारापरिषदो मध्ये चंद्रलेखेव शारदी ततः शंखसमुत्थस्य नादस्य समनंतरम्

In the midst of the Tara attendants, she appeared like the autumnal crescent moon; then, after the sound arising from the conch,

प्रास्थानिको महानादः पटहः समताड्यत ततो मधुरवाद्यानि सह तालोद्यतैस्स्वनैः

A great introductory drum was beaten; then, sweet instruments sounded together with the rhythm of clapping hands.

अनाहतानि सन्नेदुः काहलानां शतानि च सायुधानां गणेशानां महेशसमतेजसाम्

Hundreds of kettledrums resounded with unstruck sounds; the leaders of the divine hosts, armed and radiant, were present.

सहस्राणि शतान्यष्टौ तदानीं पुरतो ययुः तेषां मध्ये वृषारूढो गजारूढो यथा गुरुः

Thousands and eight hundred advanced at that time; among them, the bull-mounted one, like a teacher atop an elephant, proceeded.

जगाम गणपः श्रीमान् सोमनंदीश्वरार्चितः देवदुंदुभयो नेदुर्दिवि दिव्यसुखा घनाः

The illustrious leader of the hosts, worshipped by Somānandīśvara, advanced; divine drums resounded in heaven, clouds gave celestial joy.

ननृतुर्मुनयस्सर्वे मुमुदुः सिद्धयोगिनः ससृजुः पुष्पवृष्टिं च वितानोपरि वारिदाः

All the sages danced, the accomplished yogis rejoiced; clouds showered flowers above the canopy.

तदा देवगणैश्चान्यैः पथि सर्वत्र संगता क्षणादिव पितुर्गेहं प्रविवेश महेश्वरी

Then, accompanied by other divine hosts, the supreme goddess entered her father's house, as if in a moment, along every path.

तां दृष्ट्वा कुपितो दक्षश्चात्मनः क्षयकारणात् तस्या यवीयसीभ्यो ऽपि चक्रे पूजाम सत्कृताम्

Seeing her, Daksha became angry, because she was the cause of his own decline; yet he performed a respectful worship for her, even more than for his younger daughters.

तदा शशिमुखी देवी पितरं सदसि स्थितम् अंबिका युक्तमव्यग्रमुवाचाकृपणं वचः

Then the goddess, whose face was like the moon, Ambika, seeing her father seated in the assembly, spoke to him with composed and unwavering words, without any trace of pity.

ब्रह्मादयः पिशाचांता यस्याज्ञावशवर्तिनः स देवस्सांप्रतं तात विधिना नार्चितः किल

O father, that god whom even Brahma and the rest, down to the spirits, obey without question—he has not been worshipped here today according to proper rite.

तदास्तां मम ज्यायस्याः पुत्र्याः पूजां किमीदृशीम् असत्कृतामवज्ञाय कृतवानसि गर्हितम्

Let it be, then, that the worship of me, your eldest daughter, is neglected in this way; but by scorning it, you have committed a blameworthy act.

एवमुक्तो ऽब्रवीदेनां दक्षः क्रोधादमर्षितः त्वत्तः श्रेष्ठा विशिष्टाश्च पूज्या बालाः सुता मम

Thus addressed, Daksha, filled with anger and resentment, replied to her: 'Among my daughters, there are many who are greater and more distinguished than you, and they are worthy of honor, though still young.'

तासां तु ये च भर्तारस्ते मे बहुमता मुदा गुनैश्चाप्यधिकास्सर्वैर्भर्तुस्ते त्र्यंबकादपि

And their husbands, too, are highly esteemed by me, joyful and superior in every virtue—even more so than your husband, Tryambaka.

स्तब्धात्मा तामसश्शर्वस्त्वमिमं समुपाश्रिता तेन त्वामवमन्ये ऽहं प्रतिकूलो हि मे भवः

Your husband, whose mind is arrogant and filled with darkness, you have chosen as your refuge; therefore, I disregard you, for he is hostile to me.

तथोक्ता पितरं दक्षं क्रुद्धा देवी तमब्रवीत् शृण्वतामेव सर्वेषां ये यज्ञसदसि स्थिताः

Thus spoken to by her father Daksha, the goddess, enraged, addressed him in the hearing of all those assembled in the sacrificial hall.

अकस्मान्मम भर्तारमजाताशेषदूषणम् वाचा दूषयसे दक्ष साक्षाल्लोकमहेश्वरम्

Without cause, Daksha, you revile my husband, the Lord of the Worlds, who is without any fault, with your words.

विद्याचौरो गुरुद्रोही वेदेश्वरविदूषकः त एते बहुपाप्मानस्सर्वे दंड्या इति श्रुतिः

One who is a thief of knowledge, betrayer of his teacher, and defiler of the Vedas—such are all considered great sinners and deserving of punishment, so declares the scripture.

तस्मादत्युत्कटस्यास्य पापस्य सदृशो भृशम् सहसा दारुणो दंडस्तव दैवाद्भविष्यति

Therefore, for this exceedingly wicked sin of yours, a severe and sudden punishment, befitting your crime, will come upon you by divine will.

त्वया न पूजितो यस्माद्देवदेवस्त्रियंबकः तस्मात्तव कुलं दुष्टं नष्टमित्यवधारय

Because you did not worship Tryambaka, the god of gods, know that your lineage, corrupted, will be destroyed.

इत्युक्त्वा पितरं रुष्टा सती संत्यक्तसाध्वसा तदीयां च तनुं त्यक्त्वा हिमवंतं ययौ गिरिम्

Having spoken thus to her father in anger, Sati, casting aside all fear, abandoned her body and went to the mountain Himavat.

स पर्वतपरः श्रीमांल्लब्धपुण्यफलोदयः तदर्थमेव कृतवान् सुचिरं दुश्चरं तपः

He, devoted to the mountain, glorious, and reaping the fruits of his merit, performed severe and difficult austerities for a long time, solely for that purpose.

तस्मात्तमनुगृह्णाति भूधरेश्वरमीश्वरी स्वेच्छया पितरं चक्रे स्वात्मनो योगमायया

Therefore, the goddess, by her own will, favored the lord of the mountain, and by her yogic power, made him her father.

यदा गता सती दक्षं विनिंद्य भयविह्वला तदा तिरोहिता मंत्रा विहतश्च ततो ऽध्वरः

When Sati, distressed and condemning Daksha, departed, the mantras vanished, and the sacrifice was ruined.

तदुपश्रुत्य गमनं देव्यास्त्रिपुरुमर्दनः दक्षाय च ऋषिभ्यश्च चुकोप च शशाप तान्

Hearing of the goddess's departure, the destroyer of the three cities became enraged with Daksha and the sages, and he cursed them.

यस्मादवमता दक्षमत्कृते ऽनागसा सती पूजिताश्चेतराः सर्वाः स्वसुता भर्तृभिः सह

Because Sati, though innocent, was slighted by Daksha on my account, while all his other daughters were honored with their husbands—

वैवस्वते ऽंतरे तस्मात्तव जामातरस्त्वमी उत्पत्स्यंते समं सर्वे ब्रह्मयज्ञेष्वयोनिजाः

Therefore, in the interval of Vaivasvata Manu, all your sons-in-law will be born together, not from a womb, at the Brahma sacrifice.

भविता मानुषो राजा चाक्षुषस्य त्वमन्वये प्राचीनबर्हिषः पौत्रः पुत्रश्चापि प्रचेतसः

You will be born as a human king in the lineage of Cākṣuṣa, the grandson of Prācīnabarhis and the son of Pracetas.

अहं तत्रापि ते विघ्नमाचरिष्यामि दुर्मते धर्मार्थकामयुक्तेषु कर्मस्वपि पुनः पुनः

Even there, O wicked-minded one, I will again and again cause obstacles for you in actions connected with righteousness, wealth, and desire.
