तया परमया शक्त्या भगवंतं त्रियम्बकम् संचिन्त्य हृदये ब्रह्मा तताप परमं तपः
With that supreme power, Brahmā, meditating upon the blessed Three-eyed One in his heart, performed the highest austerity.
तीव्रेण तपसा तस्य युक्तस्य परमेष्ठिनः अचिरेणैव कालेन पिता संप्रतुतोष ह
By the intensity of his austerity, as Parameṣṭhin was thus engaged, his father was soon greatly pleased.
ततः केनचिदंशेन मूर्तिमाविश्य कामपि अर्धनारीश्वरो भूत्वा ययौ देवस्स्वयं हरः
Then, by a certain portion, entering into a form, the god Hara himself appeared as Ardhanārīśvara.
तं दृष्ट्वा परमं देवं तमसः परमव्ययम् अद्वितीयमनिर्देश्यमदृश्यमकृतात्मभिः
Seeing that supreme god, who is beyond darkness and imperishable, without a second, indescribable, invisible to those of uncreated nature—
सर्वलोकविधातारं सर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वरम् सर्वलोकविधायिन्या शक्त्या परमया युतम्
The creator of all worlds, the Lord of lords of all worlds, united with the supreme power that governs all creation—
अप्रतर्क्यमनाभासममेयमजरं ध्रुवम् अचलं निर्गुणं शांतमनंतमहिमास्पदम्
Unfathomable, without appearance, immeasurable, ageless, constant, unmoving, without qualities, peaceful, the abode of infinite greatness—
सर्वगं सर्वदं सर्वसदसद्व्यक्तिवर्जितम् सर्वोपमाननिर्मुक्तं शरण्यं शाश्वतं शिवम्
All-pervading, giver of all, free from all forms of existence and non-existence, beyond all comparisons, the refuge, eternal, auspicious—
प्रणम्य दंडवद्ब्रह्मा समुत्थाय कृतांजलिः श्रद्धाविनयसंपन्नैः श्राव्यैः संस्करसंयुतैः
Brahmā, bowing down in full prostration, rose with joined palms, and with words endowed with faith and humility, fit to be heard—
यथार्थयुक्तसर्वार्थैर्वेदार्थपरिबृंहितैः तुष्टाव देवं देवीं च सूक्तैः सूक्ष्मार्थगोचरैः
With words true in meaning, complete in all senses, enriched by the essence of the Vedas, he praised the God and the Goddess with hymns subtle in import—
जय देव महादेव जयेश्वर महेश्वर जय सर्वगुण श्रेष्ठ जय सर्वसुराधिप
Victory to you, O God, great God! Victory, Lord of lords! Victory, best of all virtues! Victory, Lord of all the gods!
जय प्रकृति कल्याणि जय प्रकृतिनायिके जय प्रकृतिदूरे त्वं जय प्रकृतिसुन्दरि
Victory, O auspicious Nature! Victory, leader of Nature! Victory, you who are beyond Nature! Victory, beautiful one of Nature!
जयामोघमहामाय जयामोघ मनोरथ जयामोघमहालील जयामोघमहाबल
Victory, unfailing great Māyā! Victory, unfailing wish-fulfiller! Victory, unfailing great play! Victory, unfailing great strength!
जय विश्वजगन्मातर्जय विश्वजगन्मये जय विश्वजगद्धात्रि जय विश्वजगत्सखि
Victory, mother of the universe! Victory, you who are the universe! Victory, sustainer of the universe! Victory, friend of the universe!
जय शाश्वतिकैश्वर्ये जय शाश्वतिकालय जय शाश्वतिकाकार जय शाश्वतिकानुग
Victory, possessor of eternal sovereignty! Victory, eternal time! Victory, eternal form! Victory, eternal follower!
जयात्मत्रयनिर्मात्रि जयात्मत्रयपालिनि जयात्मत्रयसंहर्त्रि जयात्मत्रयनायिके
Victory, creator of the threefold self! Victory, protector of the threefold self! Victory, destroyer of the threefold self! Victory, leader of the threefold self!
जयावलोकनायत्तजगत्कारणबृंहण जयोपेक्षाकटाक्षोत्थहुतभुग्भुक्तभौतिक
Victory, you who expand the cause of the world by your glance! Victory, you whose indifferent glance gives rise to the fire that consumes the elements!
जय देवाद्यविज्ञेये स्वात्मसूक्ष्मदृशोज्ज्वले जय स्थूलात्मशक्त्येशेजय व्याप्तचराचरे
Victory to you, O God, unknowable even to the gods, radiant with the vision of your own subtle self! Victory to you, Lord of the power of the gross self, pervading all that moves and is still!
जय नामैकविन्यस्तविश्वतत्त्वसमुच्चय जयासुरशिरोनिष्ठश्रेष्ठानुगकदंबक
Victory to you, in whose single name all the principles of the universe are gathered! Victory to you, supreme among those who rest upon the heads of demons, leader of the best and their followers!
जयोपाश्रितसंरक्षासंविधानपटीयसि जयोन्मूलितसंसारविषवृक्षांकुरोद्गमे
Victory to you, most skilled in the protection and arrangement of those who seek refuge! Victory to you, from whom the sprout of the poisonous tree of worldly existence is uprooted!
जय प्रादेशिकैश्वर्यवीर्यशौर्यविजृंभण जय विश्वबहिर्भूत निरस्तपरवैभव
Victory to you, who manifest the might, valor, and heroism of regional lords! Victory to you, who exist outside the universe, having cast aside all other glories!
जय प्रणीतपञ्चार्थप्रयोगपरमामृत जय पञ्चार्थविज्ञानसुधास्तोत्रस्वरूपिणि
Victory to you, who are the supreme nectar of the practice of the fivefold meaning! Victory to you, who are the very form of the hymn of the nectar of knowledge of the fivefold meaning!
जयति घोरसंसारमहारोगभिषग्वर जयानादिमलाज्ञानतमःपटलचंद्रिके
Victory to the supreme physician for the great disease of terrible worldly existence! Victory to you, O moonlight dispelling the ancient darkness of impurity and ignorance!
जय त्रिपुरकालाग्ने जय त्रिपुरभैरवि जय त्रिगुणनिर्मुक्ते जय त्रिगुणमर्दिनि
Victory to you, fire of the three cities and times! Victory to you, O Tripurabhairavi! Victory to you, free from the three qualities! Victory to you, destroyer of the three qualities!
जय प्रथमसर्वज्ञ जय सर्वप्रबोधिक जय प्रचुरदिव्यांग जय प्रार्थितदायिनि
Victory to you, first knower of all! Victory to you, awakener of all! Victory to you, adorned with many divine limbs! Victory to you, bestower of what is desired!
क्व देव ते परं धाम क्व च तुच्छं च नो वचः तथापि भगवन् भक्त्या प्रलपंतं क्षमस्व माम्
Where is your supreme abode, O God, and where are my worthless words? Yet, O Lord, forgive me who, out of devotion, babble thus.
विज्ञाप्यैवंविधैः सूक्तैर्विश्वकर्मा चतुर्मुखः नमश्चकार रुद्राय रद्राण्यै च मुहुर्मुहुः
Thus addressed with such excellent words, Viśvakarman, the four-faced one, repeatedly bowed to Rudra and Rudrāṇī.
इदं स्तोत्रवरं पुण्यं ब्रह्मणा समुदीरितम् अर्धनारीश्वरं नाम शिवयोर्हर्षवर्धनम्
This excellent and holy hymn, spoken by Brahmā, is called Ardhanārīśvara, and brings joy to Śiva and Pārvatī.
य इदं कीर्तयेद्भक्त्या यस्य कस्यापि शिक्षया स तत्फलमवाप्नोति शिवयोः प्रीतिकारणात्
Whoever recites this with devotion, or teaches it to anyone, attains its fruit because it brings delight to Śiva and Pārvatī.
सकलभुवनभूतभावनाभ्यां जननविनाशविहीनविग्रहाभ्याम् नरवरयुवतीवपुर्धराभ्यां सततमहं प्रणतोस्मि शंकराभ्याम्
To the two forms of Śaṃkara, creators and sustainers of all beings and worlds, whose forms are free from birth and destruction, who bear the bodies of the best of men and women—I always bow.
अथ देवो महादेवो महाजलदनादया वाचा मधुरगंभीरशिवदश्लक्ष्णवर्णया
Then the great god, Mahādeva, with a voice like the deep sound of a great cloud, spoke in sweet, profound, auspicious, and flawless words.
