The worship of the earthly liṅga is prescribed with the names of Śiva.

Hara, Maheśvara, Śaṃbhu, Śūlapāṇi, Pinākadhṛk, Śiva, Paśupati, and Mahādeva—these names are to be used in order.

Having properly performed the rite of nyāsa on both hands with the sixfold mantra, one should then meditate upon it.

One should meditate upon the Lord seated in the center of the Kailāsa throne, worshipped by devotees such as Sananda, blazing like the fire that consumes the sorrows of devotees, adorned with the ornaments of the universe, and embraced by Umā.
One should always meditate upon Maheśa, shining like a silver mountain, adorned with a beautiful crescent moon, with radiant limbs decorated with jewels, holding axe, deer, boon, and fearlessness in his hands, gracious, seated on a lotus, surrounded by hosts of immortals, clad in tiger skin, the origin and seed of the universe, remover of all fear, five-faced, and three-eyed.
Having meditated thus and worshipped the supreme earthly liṅga, one should recite the five-syllabled mantra given by the guru, according to the prescribed method.
With hymns, the wise should praise the Lord of gods, bowing down; the best of Brāhmaṇas should recite the various names and the Śatarudriya.
Then, holding fresh flowers in the hands joined in reverence, one should pray to Śaṃkara with these mantras, with deep devotion.
I am yours, my life is devoted to your virtues, my mind is always fixed on you, O Mṛḍa; knowing you as the ocean of compassion, O Lord of beings, be gracious to me.
Whatever I have done—recitation, worship, and so forth—whether through ignorance or knowledge, may it bear fruit by your grace, O Śaṃkara.
I am a great sinner, and you are the great purifier; knowing this, O Lord of Gaurī, do as you wish.
You are not known through the Vedas, Purāṇas, doctrines, or by the various sages; O Mahādeva, how can I know you, O Mahāśiva?
However I may be, I am yours in every way, O Maheśvara; I must be protected by you—be gracious, O Supreme Lord.
Thus, placing fresh flowers upon Śiva, one should bow to Śaṃbhu with devotion, prostrating fully according to the prescribed method, O sage.
Then, the wise should perform circumambulation according to the prescribed method, and again praise the Lord of gods with hymns, filled with faith.
Then, making a sound in the throat, the pure-minded should bow, offer respectful submission, and then perform the dismissal.

If one does not make an earthen linga but worships another image, that worship is in vain, as are gifts and other acts performed without it.
The number of earthen lingas is declared according to desire; O best of sages, the definite results are obtained according to the prescribed number.

A man seeking knowledge, with devotion, should worship a thousand earthen Shiva lingas; this certainly yields the desired result.
A man desiring wealth should worship half that number of earthen lingas; one seeking sons, one and a half thousand; one desiring clothes, one hundred and five.
