नमः पार्याय इति वा पुष्प मंत्रेण चार्पयेत् नमः पर्ण्याय इति वा बिल्बपत्रसमर्पणम्
With the mantra 'Salutation to Pārya,' or with the flower mantra, one should offer flowers; with the mantra 'Salutation to Parṇya,' or otherwise, one should offer bilva leaves.
नमःकपर्दिनेचेति धूपं दद्याद्यथाविधि दीपं दद्याद्यथोक्तं तु नम आशव इत्यृचा
With the mantra 'Salutation to Kapardī,' one should offer incense as prescribed; one should offer a lamp as stated, with the ṛk 'Salutation to Āśava.'
नमोज्येष्ठायमंत्रेण दद्यान्नैवेद्यमुत्तमम् मनुनात्र्यम्बकमितिपुनराचमनंस्मृतम्
With the mantra 'namojyeṣṭhāya', one should offer the finest food; then, with the mantra 'tryambakam', it is remembered that one should perform ācamana again.
इमा रुद्रायेति ऋचा कुर्यात्फलसमर्पणम् नमो व्रज्यायेति ऋचा सकलं शंभवेर्पयेत्
With the verse 'imā rudrāya', one should offer the fruit; with the verse 'namo vrajyāya', one should dedicate everything to Śambhu.
मनो महांतमिति च मानस्तोके इति ततः मंत्रेद्वयेनैकदशाक्षतै रुद्रान्प्रपूजयेत्
With the mantras 'mano mahāntam' and 'mānastoke', using these two mantras and eleven akṣaras, one should worship the Rudras.
हिरण्यगर्भ इति त्र्यृचादक्षिणांहिसमर्पयेत् देवस्यत्वेतिमंत्रेणह्यभिषेकंचरेद्बुधः
With the three verses beginning 'hiraṇyagarbha', one should offer dakṣiṇā; with the mantra 'devasyatve', the wise should perform abhiṣeka.
दीपमंत्रेणवाशंभोर्नीराजनविधिंचरेत् पुष्पांजलिंचरेद्भक्त्या इमा रुद्रायचत्र्यृचा
With the lamp mantra for Śambhu, one should perform the rite of nirājana; with devotion, one should offer a handful of flowers, using the three verses 'imā rudrāya'.
मानोमहान्तमिति च चरेत्प्राज्ञः प्रदक्षिणाम् मानस्तोकेति मंत्रेण साष्टाङ्गंप्रणमेत्सुधीः
With the mantra 'mano mahāntam', the wise should perform pradakṣiṇā; with the mantra 'mānastoke', the intelligent should make a full prostration.
यतोयत इत्यभयांज्ञानाख्यां त्र्यंबकेण च
With the mantra 'yatoyata', which signifies the gesture of fearlessness, and with 'tryambaka', which is called the gesture of knowledge.
नमःसेनेति मंत्रेणमहामुद्रांप्रदर्शयेत् दर्शयेद्धेनुमुद्रांचनमोगेभ्य ऋचानया
With the mantra 'namaḥseneti', one should display the great mudrā; one should also show the cow mudrā, and with the verse 'namoge', the mudrā is indicated.
पञ्चमुद्राःप्रदर्श्याथ शिवमंत्रजपं चरेत् शतरुद्रियमंत्रेण जपेद्वेदविचक्षणः
After displaying the five mudrās, one should recite the Śiva mantra; the one skilled in the Vedas should recite the Śatarudriya mantra.
ततः पञ्चाङ्गपाठंचकुर्याद्वेदविचक्षणः देवागात्वितिमंत्रेणकुर्याच्छंभोर्विसर्जनम्
Then, the one skilled in the Vedas should perform the recitation of the five limbs; with the mantra 'devāgāt', one should perform the dismissal of Śambhu.
इत्युक्तः शिवपूजायाव्यासतोवैदिकोविधिः समासतश्चशृणुतवैदिकंविधिमुत्तमम्
Thus has the Vedic procedure for Śiva worship been stated by Vyāsa; now hear, in summary, the supreme Vedic rite.
ऋचासद्योजातमितिमृदाहरणमाचरेत् वामदेवाय इति च जलप्रक्षेपमाचरेत्
With the verse 'sadyojāta', one should perform the taking of clay; with 'vāmadevāya', one should perform the sprinkling of water.
अघोरेण च मंत्रेणलिंगनिर्माणमाचरेत् तत्पुरुषायमंत्रेणाह्वानं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
With the mantra 'aghoreṇa', one should fashion the liṅga; with the mantra 'tatpuruṣāya', one should perform the invocation according to the proper method.
संयोजयेद्वेदिकायामीशानमनुनाहरम् अन्यत्सर्वं विधानंचकुर्यात्संक्षेपतः सुधीः
One should join Hara to the altar with the mantra 'īśāna'; all other procedures should be performed concisely by the wise.
पञ्चाक्षरेणमंत्रेणगुरुदत्तेनवातथा कुर्यात्पूजां षोडशोपचारेण विधिवत्सुधीः
With the five-syllable mantra given by the guru, the wise should perform worship with sixteen offerings, according to the prescribed method.
भवायभवनाशायमहादेवायधीमहि उग्राय उग्रनाशाय शर्वाय शशिमौलिने
We contemplate Bhava, the destroyer of existence, the great god; the fierce one, the destroyer of fierceness, Śarva, the one with the moon on his head.
अनेन मनुना वापि पूजयेच्छंकरंसुधीः सुभक्त्या चभ्रमंत्यक्त्वाभक्त्यैवफलदः शिवः
With this mantra, or otherwise, the wise should worship Śaṃkara; with pure devotion and abandoning error, Śiva grants the fruit solely through devotion.
इत्यपि प्रोक्तमादृत्य वैदिकक्रमपूजनम् प्रोच्यतेन्यविधिः सम्यक्साधारणतयाद्विजः
Thus, the Vedic sequence of worship has also been stated; now, the general procedure is properly explained for the twice-born.
पूजापार्थिवलिंगस्यसंप्रोक्ताशिवनामभिः
The worship of the earthly liṅga is prescribed with the names of Śiva.
हरोमहेश्वरः शंभुःशूलपाणिः पिनाकधृक् शिवः पशुपतिश्चैवमहादेव इति क्रमात्
Hara, Maheśvara, Śaṃbhu, Śūlapāṇi, Pinākadhṛk, Śiva, Paśupati, and Mahādeva—these names are to be used in order.
मृदाहरणसंघट्टप्रतिष्ठाह्वानमेवच स्नपनंपूजनंचैवक्षमस्वेतिविसर्जनम्
The acts of collecting clay, shaping, establishing, invoking, bathing, and worshipping, as well as the dismissal, are to be performed.
अंकारादिचतुर्थ्यंतैर्नमोन्तैर्नामभिः क्रमात् कर्तव्याचक्रियासर्वाभक्त्यापरमयामुदा
All these rites should be carried out, in order, with the names ending in the fourth case beginning with 'aṃ', with utmost devotion and reverence.
कृत्वा न्यासविधिंसम्यक्षडङ्गकरयोस्तथा षडक्षरेणमंत्रेणततोध्यानंसमाचरेत्
Having properly performed the rite of nyāsa on both hands with the sixfold mantra, one should then meditate upon it.
कैलासपीठासनमध्यसंस्थं भक्तैः सनंदादिभिरर्च्यमानम् भक्तर्तिदावानलमप्रमेयंध्यायेदुमालिंगितविश्वभूषणम्
One should meditate upon the Lord seated in the center of the Kailāsa throne, worshipped by devotees such as Sananda, blazing like the fire that consumes the sorrows of devotees, adorned with the ornaments of the universe, and embraced by Umā.
ध्यायेन्नित्यंमहेशंरजतगिरिनिभंचारुचंद्रावतंसंरत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलांगंपरशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तंप्रसन्नम् पद्मासीनंसमंतात्स्थितममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिंवसानंविश्वाद्यंविश्वबीजंनिखिलभयहरंपञ्चवक्त्रंत्रिनेत्रम्
One should always meditate upon Maheśa, shining like a silver mountain, adorned with a beautiful crescent moon, with radiant limbs decorated with jewels, holding axe, deer, boon, and fearlessness in his hands, gracious, seated on a lotus, surrounded by hosts of immortals, clad in tiger skin, the origin and seed of the universe, remover of all fear, five-faced, and three-eyed.
इतिध्यात्वाचसंपूज्यपार्थिवंलिंगमुत्तमम् जपेत्पञ्चाक्षरंमंत्रंगुरुदत्तंयथाविधि
Having meditated thus and worshipped the supreme earthly liṅga, one should recite the five-syllabled mantra given by the guru, according to the prescribed method.
स्तुतिभिश्चैवदेवेशंस्तुवीतप्रणमन्सुधीः नानाभिधाभिर्विप्रेन्द्राः पठेद्वैशतरुद्रियम्
With hymns, the wise should praise the Lord of gods, bowing down; the best of Brāhmaṇas should recite the various names and the Śatarudriya.
ततः साक्षतपुष्पाणिगृहीत्वांजलिनामुदा प्रार्थयेच्छंकरंभक्त्यामंत्रैरेभिःसुभक्तितः
Then, holding fresh flowers in the hands joined in reverence, one should pray to Śaṃkara with these mantras, with deep devotion.
