आवाहनादिकंसर्वमाचार्येणैवकारयेत् आचार्य ऋत्विजा सार्धं तन्मात्रान्प्रजपेच्छतम्
All acts from invocation onward should be performed by the teacher alone; the teacher, together with the officiating priests, should recite the prescribed mantras.
कुंभस्य पश्चिमे भागेजपांतेहोममाचरेत् कोटिंलक्षंसहस्रंवाशतमष्टोत्तरं बुधाः
At the western side of the pot, after the recitation, the wise should perform the homa, whether a crore, a hundred thousand, a thousand, a hundred, or one hundred and eight times.
एकाहंवानवाहंवातथामंडलमेव वा यथायोग्यंप्रकुर्वीतकालदेशानुसारतः
It may be done in one day, nine days, or even in a mandala (forty days), as is appropriate, according to time and place.
शमीहोमश्च शांत्यर्थे वृत्त्यर्थेचपलाशकम् समिदन्नाज्यकैर्द्रव्यैर्नाम्नामंत्रेण वा हुनेत्
For the sake of peace, the śamī wood should be used for the homa, and for prosperity, palāśa wood; the offerings should be made with fuel, rice, and clarified butter, using the respective names and mantras.
प्रारंभेयत्कृतंद्रव्यंतत्क्रियांतंसमाचरेत् पुण्याहंवाचयित्वांते दिनेसंप्रोक्ष्ययेज्जलैः
After beginning, one should complete the ritual with the materials prepared for it; at the end, having recited the auspicious invocation, one should sprinkle the site with water.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्पश्चाद्यावदाहुतिसंख्यया आचार्यश्चहविष्याशीत्विजश्चभवेद्बुधाः
Afterwards, one should feed Brahmins according to the number of offerings made; the teacher and the officiating priests, being learned, should also partake of the sacrificial food.
आदित्यादीन्ग्रहानिष्ट्वासर्वहोमांत एवहि ऋत्विभ्योदक्षिणांदद्यान्नवरत्नंयथा क्रमम्
Having worshipped the planets beginning with the Sun at the conclusion of all the offerings, one should give gifts to the priests in order—food and jewels as appropriate.
दशदानंततःकुर्याद्भूरिदानंततः परम् बालानामुपनीतानांगृहिणांवनिनांधनम्
Then one should make ten gifts, and then even greater gifts: to children, to those who have undergone initiation, to householders, and to forest-dwellers.
कन्यानांचसभर्त्ःणांविधवानांततःपरम् तंत्रोपकरणंसर्वमाचार्यायनिवेदयेत्
Next, to maidens, to married women, and then to widows; all the implements used there should be presented to the teacher.
उत्पातानांचमारीणांदुःखस्वामीयमःस्मृतः तस्माद्यमस्यप्रीत्यर्थंकालदानंप्रदापयेत्
The lord of death is said to be the master of calamities and diseases; therefore, to please Yama, one should give the gift called Kālada.
शतनिष्केण वा कुर्याद्दशनिष्केण वा पुनः पाशांकुशधरं कालं कुर्यात्पुरुषरूपिणम्
One should make an image of Kāla, holding a noose and goad, in human form, using either a hundred niṣkas or ten niṣkas.
तत्स्वर्णप्रतिमादानंकुर्याद्दक्षिणयासह तिलदानंततःकुर्यात्पूर्णायुष्यप्रसिद्धये
One should give that golden image along with a gift, and then offer sesame seeds for the attainment of full longevity.
आज्यावेक्षणदानंचकुर्याद्व्याधिनिवृत्तये सहस्रंभोजयेद्विप्रान्दरिद्रःशतमेववा
One should give the gift of clarified butter for the removal of disease, and feed a thousand Brahmins—or, if poor, at least a hundred.
वित्ताभावेदरिद्रस्तुयथाशक्तिसमाचरेत् भैरवस्यमहापूजांकुर्याद्भूतादिशांतये
If one is destitute, one should perform as much as possible according to one's means; one should conduct the great worship of Bhairava for the pacification of spirits and directions.
महाभिषेकंनैवेद्यंशिवस्यान्तेतुकारयेत् ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्पश्चाद्भूरिभोजनरूपतः
At the end, one should perform the great anointing and offering for Shiva, and afterwards feed Brahmins with abundant food.
एवंकृतेनयज्ञेनदोषशांतिमवाप्नुयात् शांतियज्ञमिमंकुर्याद्वर्षेवर्षेतुफाल्गुने
By performing the sacrifice in this way, one attains the pacification of faults; this peace-sacrifice should be performed every year in the month of Phālguna.
दुर्दर्शनादौ सद्यो वै मासमात्रेसमाचरेत् महापापादिसंप्राप्तौ कुर्याद्भैरवपूजनम्
At the first sign of inauspiciousness, one should perform it immediately, or at least within a month; if great sin arises, one should worship Bhairava.
महाव्याधिसमुत्पत्तौसंकल्पंपुनराचरेत् सर्वभावे दरिद्रस्तु दीपदानमथाचरेत्
If a great disease arises, one should make a resolve again; in every situation, if one is poor, one should at least give a lamp.
तदप्यशक्तः स्नात्वावैयत्किंचिद्दानमाचरेत् दिवाकरंनमस्कुर्यान्मन्त्रेणाष्टोत्तरंशतम्
If even that is not possible, after bathing, one should give whatever little one can, and offer salutations to the Sun with the mantra one hundred and eight times.
सहस्रमयुतंलक्षंकोटिंवाकारयेद् बुधः नमस्कारात्मयज्ञेन तुष्टाः स्युः सर्वदेवताः
The wise should perform a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, or even a crore salutations; by this sacrifice of salutations, all the deities are satisfied.
त्वत्स्वरूपेर्पिताबुद्धिर्नते ऽशून्ये च रोचति या चास्त्यस्मदहंतेति त्वयिदृष्टे विवर्जिता
The mind that is offered to your form, O Lord, does not delight in emptiness; and the sense of 'I am' that exists in us is dispelled upon seeing you.
नम्रो ऽहंहिस्वदेहेनभोमहांस्त्वमसिप्रभो नशून्योमत्स्वरूपोवैतवदासो ऽस्मिसांप्रतम्
I am humble with my own body, while you are the great one, O Lord; my own nature is not empty, for now I am truly your servant.
यथायोग्यंस्वात्मयज्ञंनमस्कारंप्रकल्पयेत् अथात्रशिवनैवेद्यंदत्त्वातांबूलमाहरेत्
One should offer worship and salutations to the Self as appropriate; then, having given the offering to Shiva, one should take the betel leaf.
शिवप्रदक्षिणंकुर्यात्स्वयमष्टोत्तरं शतम् सहस्रमयुतंलक्षं कोटिमन्येन कारयेत्
One should perform circumambulation of Shiva oneself, one hundred and eight times; a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, or a crore may be done by another.
शिवप्रदक्षिणात्सर्वंपातकंनश्यतिक्षणात् दुःखस्यमूलंव्याधिर्हिव्याधेर्मूलंहिपातकम्
By circumambulating Shiva, all sins are destroyed in an instant; the root of suffering is disease, and the root of disease is indeed sin.
धर्मेणैवहिपापानामपनोदनमीरितम् शिवोद्देशकृतोधर्मःक्षमःपापविनोदने
It is declared that the removal of sins is through righteousness alone; the righteousness performed for Shiva's sake is capable of dispelling sin.
अध्यक्षं शिवधर्मेषु प्रदक्षिणमितीरितम् क्रियया जपरूपंहिप्रणवंतुप्रदक्षिणम्
It is said that circumambulation is the overseer among the duties to Shiva; in practice, circumambulation is indeed the recitation of the sacred syllable Om.
जननंमरणंद्वंद्वंमायाचक्रमितीरितम् शिवस्यमायाचक्रंहिबलिपीठंतदुच्यते
Birth and death, the pair of opposites, are called the wheel of illusion; indeed, the altar for offerings is said to be Shiva's wheel of illusion.
बलिपीठंसमारभ्यप्रादक्षिण्यक्रमेणवै पदेपदांतरंगत्वाबलिपीठं समाविशेत्
Beginning at the altar for offerings, one should enter it step by step in the order of circumambulation, keeping a space between each step.
नमस्कारंततः कुर्यात्प्रदक्षिणमितीरितम् निर्गमाज्जननंप्राप्तंनमस्त्वात्मसमर्पणम्
Then one should offer salutations, which is said to be circumambulation; upon departing, birth is attained, and with salutations, the self is offered.
