वज्रपाणिनमायांतमैरावणशिरोगतम्। संग्रामभूमौ दृष्ट्वा त्वां सर्वे नश्यंति दानवाः
Seeing you, bearing the thunderbolt and mounted upon Airāvata's head, on the battlefield, all the Dānavas perish.
ये त्वया विजिताः पूर्वं दानवा बलवत्तराः। सहस्रांशेन तत्तुल्यो न भवामि कथंचन
Those Dānavas, stronger than others, whom you have conquered before—by a thousandth part of your strength, I could never equal them.
एवंविधोऽसि देवेंद्र मम का गणना भवेत्। मां समुद्धर्तुकामेन त्वयैवागमनं कृतम्
Such as you are, O Indra, what count am I to you? It is for the purpose of rescuing me that you have come here.
करिष्यामि न संदेहो दास्ये प्राणानपि ध्रुवम्। किमर्थं देवराजोक्ता भूमिरेषा त्वया हि मे
I will do it, there is no doubt; I will give even my life, certainly. For what reason, O king of gods, have you spoken of this land to me?
इमे दाराः सुता गावो यच्चान्यद्विद्यते वसु। त्रैलोक्यराज्यमखिलं विप्रस्यास्य प्रदीयताम्
These wives, sons, cows, and whatever other wealth exists, the entire kingdom of the three worlds—let it be given to this Brāhmaṇa.
अपकीर्तिर्भवेन्मह्यं पूर्वेषां च न संशयः। गृहायातस्य शक्रस्य दत्तं बाष्कलिना न तु
Disgrace would come to me, and to my ancestors, without doubt, if, having come to my house, Śakra receives a gift from Bāṣkali, but not otherwise.
अन्योपि योर्थी मे प्राप्तः समे प्रियतरः सदा। भवानत्र विशेषेण विचारं मा कृथाः क्वचित्
If another supplicant arrives, he is always dear to me as well; but especially you, do not ever hesitate here.
बृहत्त्रपा मे देवेंद्र यद्भूमेस्तु पदत्रयम्। ब्राह्मणस्य विशेषेण प्रार्थितं तु त्वया विभो
Great shame is mine, O Indra, for the three steps of land; it was especially requested by you for the Brāhmaṇa, O lord.
दास्ये ग्रामवरानस्य भवतस्तु त्रिविष्टपम्। अश्वान्गजान्भूमिधनं स्त्रियश्चोद्भिन्नचूचुकाः
I will give the best villages, and for you, the heavenly realm; horses, elephants, land, wealth, and women with prominent breasts.
यासां दर्शनमात्रेण वृद्धोपि तरुणायते। ताः स्त्रियो वसुधां चैतां वामनस्य प्रतिग्रहम्
By merely seeing them, even the old become youthful; these women and this earth are to be given as an offering to Vāmana.
प्रतिदास्यामि देवेन्द्र प्रसादः क्रियतां हि मे। एतावदुक्ते वचने तदा बाष्कलिना नृप
I will give it back, O lord of the gods; let your favor be upon me. When Bāṣkali had spoken these words, O king,
पुरोधास्तूशना प्राह दानवेंद्रं तदा वचः। भवान्राजा दानवेंद्र ऐश्वर्येष्टविधे स्थितः
Then the priest Uśanā spoke these words to the lord of the Daityas: 'You are the king, O lord of the Daityas, established in the ritual of sovereignty.'
युक्तायुक्तं न जानासि देयं कस्य मया क्वचित्। मंत्रिभिः सुसमालोच्य युक्तायुक्तं परीक्ष्य च 1.30.
You do not know what is proper or improper, nor to whom something should be given by me at any time. After thorough deliberation with ministers, and examining what is proper and improper—
प्राप्तं त्रैलोक्यराज्यत्वं जित्वा देवान्सवासवान्। वाक्यस्यास्यावसानेव भवान्प्राप्स्यति बंधनं
Having conquered the gods along with Indra, you have attained the sovereignty of the three worlds. But at the end of this very speech, you will find yourself in bondage.
य एष वामनो राजन्विष्णुरेव सनातनः। नास्य वै भवता देयं पिता ते घातितः स्वयं
This dwarf, O king, is in truth Viṣṇu, the eternal one. You must not give to him; your father was slain by him personally.
अयं ते पितृहा प्राप्तो मातृहा बंधुघातकः। वंशोच्छेदकरस्तुभ्यं भूतश्चैव भविष्यति
He who has come before you is the killer of your father, the slayer of your mother, the destroyer of your kin; he has been, and will be, the one who brings about the end of your lineage.
न चैष धर्मं जानाति शक्रादीनां हिते रतः। मायाविना दानवा ये मायया येन निर्जिताः
He does not know righteousness, being devoted to the welfare of Indra and the others. He is a deceiver, by whom the Dānavas have been conquered through deceit.
मायया ब्राह्मणं रूपं वामनं च प्रदर्शितम्। अत्र किं बहुनोक्तेन नास्य देयं तु किंचन
By his illusion, he has assumed the form of a brāhmaṇa, and shown himself as a dwarf. What need is there to say more? Nothing at all should be given to him.
मक्षिकापादमात्रं तु भूमिरस्य प्रतिग्रहः। विनाशमेष्यसि क्षिप्रं सत्यंसत्यं मया श्रुतम्
If you give him even as much land as the footprint of a fly, you will quickly come to ruin—this is the truth, the truth, as I have heard it.
गुरुणाप्येवमुक्तस्तु भूयो वाक्यमथाब्रवीत्। धर्मार्थिना मया सर्वं प्रतिज्ञातं गुरो त्विदम्
Even when thus addressed by his teacher, he again spoke these words: 'All this has been promised by me, O teacher, for the sake of righteousness.'
प्रतिज्ञापालनं कार्यं सतां धर्मः सनातनः। यद्येष भगवान्विष्णुर्नास्ति धन्यतरो मया
The keeping of a promise must be done; it is the eternal duty of the virtuous. If this is indeed the Blessed Viṣṇu, there is no one more fortunate than I.
गृह्य प्रतिग्रहं मत्तो यदि देवान्बुभूषति। भूयोपि धन्यतां नीतो देवेनानेन वै गुरो
If he wishes to accept a gift from me, desiring the gods, then I am made even more blessed by this god, O teacher.
यं योगिनो ध्यानयुक्ता ध्यायमाना हि दर्शनम्। न लभंते तथा विप्रास्सोयं दृष्टो मयाद्य वै
He whom yogis, absorbed in meditation, do not obtain a vision of—such a one I have seen today, indeed.
दानानि ये प्रयच्छंति सकुशोदकपाणिना। प्रीयतां भगवान्विष्णुः परमात्मा सनातनः
Those who give gifts with hands holding kuśa grass and water—may the Blessed Viṣṇu, the supreme soul, the eternal one, be pleased.
एवमुक्ते तु वचने अपवर्गस्य भागिनः। यदत्र कार्यकरणे विकल्पो मे बभूव ह
When these words were spoken, of those who are entitled to liberation, there arose in me a doubt regarding what action should be taken here.
उपदिष्टोस्मि भवता बालत्वे चावधारितम्। शत्रावपि गृहायाते मास्त्वदेयं तु किंचन
I have been instructed by you, and it has been determined since my youth: even if an enemy comes to my house, nothing should be refused by you.
एतदेव विचिंत्याहं प्राणानपि स्वकान्गुरो। वामनस्य प्रदास्यामि शक्रस्यापि त्रिविष्टपम्
Reflecting on this very matter, I say, O teacher, that I would give even my own life; I will give to Vāmana even the heaven of Indra.
अपीडाकारि यद्दानं तद्दानमिह दीयते। पीडाकारि च यद्दानं तद्दानं समलं स्मृतम्
A gift that causes no harm is indeed a true gift; but a gift that causes harm is regarded as tainted.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा गुरुस्तत्र त्रपयाधोमुखः स्थितः। बाष्कलिरुवाच। अर्थिता भवतो देव देया सर्वा धरा मया
Hearing this, the teacher there stood with his head bowed in shame. Bāṣkali said: 'O Lord, since you have requested, all the earth shall be given by me.'
त्रपाकरं भवेन्मह्यं यदस्य भूपदत्रयम्। इंद्र उवाच। सत्यमेतद्दानवेन्द्र यदुक्तं भवता हि मे
'It would be a cause of embarrassment to me if only three steps of land are given.' Indra said: 'O lord of the Dānavas, what you have said to me is indeed true.'
